Life Skills Instructor

Organization: Community Action Agency of Delaware County, Inc.
Location: 1414 Meetinghouse Road, Boothwyn, PA 19061
Work Arrangement: On-site with regular local travel throughout Delaware County
Transportation: A company vehicle is available for work-related travel; applicants must also be licensed and insured drivers with access to reliable transportation
Employment Type: Full-time-Exempt
Salary: $48,750.00-$58,500.00
Schedule: Mon.-Fri.-8:00am-4:30pm or 8:30-5:00pm

As a trusted nonprofit organization, CAADC provides a broad range of programs designed to promote stability, strengthen families, and support long-term self-sufficiency through innovative services and community partnerships.

Position Summary

The Life Skills Instructor plans, coordinates, and facilitates practical life-skills education for economically disadvantaged individuals and families. The position helps participants develop the knowledge, confidence, and practical tools needed to achieve greater personal stability, financial wellness, and self-sufficiency.

Instruction will be provided individually and in group settings and will cover areas such as communication, decision-making, goal setting, personal responsibility, employment readiness, household management, community engagement, and financial literacy.

The Life Skills Instructor will incorporate the FDIC Money Smart curriculum to teach participants about budgeting, banking, saving, spending, credit, borrowing, consumer protection, and other essential financial topics. During tax season, the employee will also support the Agency’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesLife-Skills Education

Work directly with individuals and families to promote stability, financial wellness, independence, and self-sufficiency.
Assess participants’ strengths, needs, goals, and barriers.
Assist participants with establishing personal goals, identifying action steps, and tracking progress.
Deliver individual and group instruction in communication, decision-making, goal setting, personal responsibility, employment readiness, household management, and community engagement.
Use the FDIC Money Smart curriculum to provide practical financial-literacy education.
Teach budgeting, income and expense tracking, banking, saving, credit, responsible borrowing, debt management, fraud prevention, and consumer rights.
Develop engaging, hands-on learning activities using worksheets, simulations, real-world examples, reflection exercises, and role-playing scenarios.
Prepare lesson plans, activities, handouts, assessments, and other instructional materials.
Research community resources, consumer protections, financial products, and supportive services.
Coordinate with case managers and shelter staff to align instruction with participants’ employment, housing, and service-plan goals.
Maintain accurate attendance records, lesson plans, participant assessments, case notes, and program reports.
Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, case conferences, outreach activities, and continuous-quality-improvement initiatives.
Complete the FDIC Money Smart Train-the-Trainer program and maintain proficiency in delivering the curriculum.

VITA Program Support

Participate as a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance team member during tax season.
Complete all required IRS training.
Obtain and maintain the required IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance certification, including the Advanced Tax Law certification.
Assist with other VITA-related responsibilities as assigned.

The Position Objectives Life Skills Instructor will:

Help participants develop practical skills that promote stability, confidence, and self-sufficiency.
Maintain a respectful, trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and inclusive learning environment.
Manage varied assignments, competing priorities, and participant needs.
Identify concerns proactively and connect participants with appropriate resources.
Maintain accurate documentation and support program-reporting requirements.
Represent CAADC professionally within the Agency and throughout the community.
Advance the Agency’s mission by helping participants develop skills that support long-term success.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in human services, social work, psychology, education, financial counseling, public administration, or a related field preferred.
At least two years of relevant experience in life-skills education, financial literacy, case management, human services, workforce development, housing stability, community outreach, or a related field.
Experience working with individuals or families affected by poverty, housing instability, unemployment, justice-system involvement, trauma, limited financial literacy, or limited access to community resources.
Ability and willingness to complete the FDIC Money Smart Train-the-Trainer program.
Ability and willingness to complete required IRS training and obtain the applicable VITA certification.
Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities, assignments, and participant needs.
Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to work effectively and respectfully with individuals from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Ability to maintain accurate and timely program documentation.
Valid driver’s license, automobile insurance, and access to reliable transportation required.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

The position regularly requires speaking, hearing, sitting, standing, walking, and navigating stairs. It may also require stooping, kneeling, crouching, and occasionally lifting or moving items weighing up to 15 pounds.

Work Location and Travel

The primary work location is:

1414 Meetinghouse Road
Boothwyn, PA 19061

The position requires regular travel to Agency locations and other worksites throughout Delaware County. A company vehicle will be available for authorized work-related travel. Employees must possess a valid driver’s license and insurance and have access to reliable personal transportation.
