Full Job Description

Job Summary

The Field Organizer I plays a critical role in advancing the mission of the union by recruiting, training, and developing rank-and-file leaders, engaging members in collective action, organizing non-union workers, and enforcing contracts. This position supports both internal and external organizing efforts, mobilizes membership for political and workplace campaigns, and builds community support for union initiatives. The Organizer will work both independently and collaboratively with other departments to promote worker empowerment and strengthen the labor movement.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership Development & Member Engagement

Identify, recruit, and train rank-and-file leaders, stewards, and Member Leaders.
Conduct leadership development and steward training sessions.
Motivate members to take active roles in union activities and issue-based campaigns.
Build and maintain organizing committees within worksites and communities.

Organizing & Campaigns

Lead operational plans for new organizing and internal and external mobilization campaigns.
Conduct site visits, one-on-one conversations, and presentations to promote union membership and activism.
Mobilize workers for rallies, job actions, political events, and lobbying.
Counter anti-union efforts with strategic organizing tactics.
Develop campaign materials and coordinate with Communications on messaging and outreach.

Contract Enforcement & Advocacy

Advocate for members on contractual and non-contractual workplace issues.
Participate in contract negotiations and assist members during the bargaining process.
Work with staff and leaders to ensure contract compliance and resolution of workplace grievances.

Political, Community, and Grassroots Organizing

Collaborate with the Government Affairs department to implement political action programs.
Conduct PEOPLE and Get Out the Vote (GOTV) efforts.
Organize community awareness campaigns, including canvassing, petitions, and informational meetings.
Build relationships with community organizations to support union goals.

Administrative & Interdepartmental Coordination

Attend and contribute to staff meetings and strategy sessions.
Complete administrative tasks including data entry, member communications, and event planning.
Respond to member inquiries via phone, email, or direct contact.
Perform all other duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Skills & Abilities

Strong interpersonal, communication, and motivational skills.
Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and general office tools.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Resourcefulness, problem-solving ability, and good judgment.
Willingness to take initiative and lead projects independently or within a team.

Education & Experience

High school diploma required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in external labor organizing, community organizing, or public policy.
Experience in local or state government preferred.
Familiarity with labor law, contract language, and organizing principles.
Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice.

Other Requirements

Valid Hawai‘i driver’s license and a reliable vehicle with insurance.
Willingness to travel inter-island and out-of-state.
Ability to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.
Ability to lift up to 20 pounds and work in various indoor and outdoor environments.

Pay: $76,000.00 per year
