Lead Driver

Position Title:

Schedule:

Tuesday through Saturday, 12:30 PM to 8:30 PM

Full-Time, Non-Exempt

South Hadley, MA (primary) | Pawtucket, RI (as assigned)

Position Summary

The Lead Driver is a senior field operations role that combines active route driving with end-of-shift dispatch oversight and customer communication responsibilities. This position is responsible for executing assigned deliveries and pickups during the first portion of the shift, transitioning into a lead operations role in the latter part of the day to close out the dispatch cycle, complete all required reports, and serve as the primary point of contact for customer status updates. The Lead Driver upholds ABC/Package Express standards for safe, professional, and chain-of-custody-compliant service delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Field Operations

Execute assigned delivery and pickup routes in a safe, timely, and professional manner
Maintain proper chain of custody documentation for all shipments, including medical, pharmaceutical, and sensitive freight
Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections in accordance with company safety protocols
Communicate proactively with dispatch on route status, delays, exceptions, and proof-of-delivery confirmations
Represent ABC/Package Express professionally at all customer and facility locations
Handle freight with care including medical devices, life sciences cargo, and final mile deliveries as applicable

Dispatch Closeout and Reporting

Transition from field operations to lead driver oversight at the designated time each shift
Monitor and confirm completion of all active routes and outstanding deliveries for the day
Coordinate with drivers to resolve any end-of-day exceptions, missed stops, or open pickups
Complete the End-of-Shift (EOS) report accurately and on time, documenting route completions, exceptions, mileage, and any incidents
Compile and submit all required daily operational reports per company and customer requirements
Verify driver paperwork, delivery confirmations, and chain-of-custody documentation are complete and filed appropriately

Customer Communication

Deliver timely and professional status updates to customers regarding delivery completions, exceptions, and estimated resolution timelines
Serve as the customer-facing operations point of contact during the evening shift window
Escalate unresolved customer issues to the Dispatch Manager with full documentation
Maintain a courteous, solutions-oriented communication style consistent with ABC/Package Express service standards

Qualifications

Required

Valid commercial or standard driver's license with a clean motor vehicle record (MVR)
Minimum 2 years of professional driving experience in a delivery or logistics environment
Demonstrated ability to read and execute route plans, delivery manifests, and dispatch instructions
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities during high-volume close-out periods
Reliable, punctual, and able to consistently meet the Tuesday through Saturday schedule
Proficiency in basic digital tools including dispatch software, mobile applications, and email
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform the physical requirements of the role

Preferred

Prior lead, senior driver, or dispatch support experience
Familiarity with medical courier, life sciences, or healthcare logistics operations
Experience with chain-of-custody documentation and temperature-sensitive freight handling
Knowledge of the New England region and I-91/I-90 corridor

Physical Requirements

Extended periods of driving in varying traffic and weather conditions
Loading and unloading freight, including repetitive lifting up to 50 pounds
Standing, walking, bending, and climbing as required during deliveries
Office or dispatch area work during the close-out portion of the shift
