Work at Mercy Hospital, comparatively pay even to other catholic health facilities is lower.  Not to mention other competitors.  Work environment is such that most the time you work short, management does not support or listen to those that work for them.  Poor training, other work environment issues, insufficient staffing to handle workload.  Open workers up to make mistakes, which are strictly enforced by management, so much so, that one to two small mistakes can risk you, your job!  Which then limits your ability to grow and advance in the system.  Software and equipment are constantly down or being fixed/upgraded, causing interruptions in work efficiency.  Causing a systemic, negative morale, among all that work here.  Never worked somewhere where I hear staff and patients/patient families talk so negative about a place, that I was employed.  That endangers patients and staff a like!  This being said there are people that work hard and do good work but due to the environment and pre existing stigma, keep more from succeeding at their jobs!  Due to exhaustion and stress imposed, by work environment and culture of the current catholic health system.

Case Management RN on Cardiac/IV teams.

Case Manager on the East Side and Lower West Side of Buffalo,
Worked with Cardiac patients before and after hospitalization. 
Provided patient education and cardiopulmonary assessments for CHF (Congestive Heart Failure), CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery), and Patient's awaiting Heart Transplant at the Cleveland Clinic. 
 
Worked with patients needing infusion therapy via various access devices (PICC lines, Mediports, Peripheral catheters) at home due to infections, IVIG, Steroids, and other medications ordered by MD. Provided patient education to patients and their family regarding disease process and management. Assessed patient's/caregiver's ability to administer IV medication and managed case accordingly.

Learned how to be very resourceful and how to access community resources and make referrals. Became knowledgeable about Medicare/Medicaid billing and ICD-9 coding. 

Management had high standards, but were supportive in getting the job done.

Co-workers were great! Worked alone except for brief office time and team meetings.

The hardest part of the job was the long hours and on-call.

I enjoyed the patient's and their families the most.

The Catholic Health System and more specifically The McAuley Residence use wildly unprofessional methods to recruit new nurses. They advertise positions on their ortho unit which is clean and well run, then as soon as your probationary period is over they move you to a different unit and start the process all over again. It's called a bait and switch and it's a terrible way to treat nurses. Additionally it is common practice for nurses to not apply skin treatments to patients who are not alert and oriented enough to advocate for themselves. They claim to serve hot meals but they are never even warm. These practices and more are all happening because the director of nursing hasn't touched a patient in any way since the Clinton administration.

As a Patient Transport Lead Person and as an In-house Orderly, my day was busy from start to finish. A typical day for me would consist of: organisation of personnel to various assignments (e.g patient transport to different divisions within facility; patient bed weights; gathering department supplies throughout patient floors/units; direct, hands-on patient care), receiving any and all instructions from my direct department heads, and various tasks as assigned my the Director of Nursing. Overall, this was my first employ in the medical field full - time; what I've learned is that attention to patient concerns, attention to detail, and adhering to all medical physicians patient orders was/is a mandatory requirement to fulfilling facility's mission and goals concerning patient care.

I have spent my entire professional career with this company and I had always planned to retire with them. About 3 years ago management changed and the unit suffered a mass exudes for a variety of reasons but mostly due to the simple truth that you are not valued and either is your loyalty. The staffing ratios are awful. Patients are not being properly placed according to their acuity, ICU patients being held in the ED for days on end only to be sent to a Med/surge unit. Multiple staff injuries. Absolutely impossible to talk to management. Seniority is not valued at all. Many scheduling issues. Many of the managers have never actually worked as a floor nurse, I believe this may be the cause of their unreasonable expectations of staff. I guess it’s true when they say those that can not do manage......

Inputting all charges for Ob/gyn, pediatrics, internal medicine and pain management. The physicians would circle what level CPT code they wanted and I would come up with the ICD 9 code per documentation. I learned that I can self learn by personal study. My management was constantly changing . The hardest part of my job was that I was the only one who could do it. Which made maternity leave and vacations hard since I would be very behind in my work which lead to timely filing issues. The most enjoyable part of the job was working with all walks of life . I learned different cultures and many life lessons.

I enjoyed that I worked independently at three different sites, with minimum oversight from my manager.  In some respects, I would have benefited from additional training and guidance in my work.  The manager and a coworker spent more time at work on personal and other tasks not directed at overseeing employees and ensuring best practices.  Many times, I was used to assist other employees to complete incomplete projects due to lack of oversight.  Frustration at needing to play catch up at my duties when others were doing homework, planning personal activities, and not directing themselves to work tasks.

Very unethical work environment. Many work expectations weren't made clear initially (things constantly being added that aren't in job description), many of the management couldn't be bothered if you need something. If you enjoy being overworked and talked to any kind of way by management and staff then this is the place for you. Many nurses and higher ups talk down to the nursing assistants. Theres absolutely no communication between colleagues as well, I could write a novel on all the things wrong with this place. 

Fairly competitive pay, PTO, great health insurance. Only issues I ever experienced were typical nursing issues that you’ll find anywhere — floating often, rotating to a different shift, being called off if new/low census, occasionally having more patients than ideal. My team was very supportive and helpful always, I was a new nurse when I worked here and would’ve struggled immensely without their support. Nursing management was always encouraging and provided constructive feedback. Truly felt like my coworkers were family.

A typical day at work requires everyone on staff to work together and in sync. I've learned a lot about life in a clinical setting and how things run smoothly within a hospital, or outpatient facility. The most rewarding part of my job is when patients come in and remember that we're their "blood ladies" and they enjoy coming to see us, even if it means their health isn't the best. The hardest part of my job is definitely when our patients pass, we know they typically come see us regularly when they're not in great health, so when they pass it's like losing a family member, but we did all we could for them in the time we were given. 

Management is pretty hands off.
