I have worked in many roles and levels with Cru. I have always appreciated the mission of the Campus Ministry of Cru to transform the lives of college students to then impact the world for Christ. If you appreciate that mission and if you like working with people, Cru can be a great place to work. 

I started working in field ministry on the college campus, doing mentoring work with students and having opportunities to do a variety of tasks. That work was very people oriented, and I learned many skills that have equipped me to do other jobs. I move up to lead our local chapter, gaining valuable leadership experience over a staff team and many student volunteers. The field role can require many hours at certain times of the year. At other times it is not as busy. You do receive good training to do your job. 

Over the past few years I have worked in office roles in national leadership of the ministry. I was ready for new challenges and for a more 9-5 type role. Unfortunately the ministry underwent a restructuring leading me to have 3 roles in 4 years. The transitions have been difficult. The restructuring was not done well. I still believe in the mission of our ministry, but I wish executive leadership had done a better job leading through change these past few years. 

Most roles, except for some roles at the headquarters, require staff members to raise their own financial support, as missionaries usually do in ministry. Great training is given in how to raise financial support, and I have generally had enough support to support a full salary. 

You can live a comfortable life with Cru, but you will never make a lot of money. You do a job like this for reasons other than money. Salary is determined by the staff member within certain ranges based on need (family size, location, etc). The maximum a family with kids can make is around $100k, and this applies for all roles all the way up to the President of the ministry. 

My best friends have been my coworkers. The shared vision and work causes close relationships to form. 

I have always felt cared for by my supervisors over the years. I have counted all of them as friends. 

If you want to change people's lives with the message of Christ and are willing to trust God with raising financial support, Cru is a great place to work. 

I met one-one-one with young women attending college who wanted to grow in leadership and personal life issues. I scheduled the times we would meet to do this, then prepared the materials based on our conversations and where they were at and where they wanted to go. We met weekly for 2 hours and also did community groups within dorms, inviting the students to come based on surveys taken on first day of classes. Helped schedule extracurricular events for the students in the organization, including who would be doing what and helping with the how. Attended weekly staff meetings and monthly women's staff meetings to encourage and be encouraged in our lives, both personal and with the students. I often ordered materials for the mentoring and the community groups. Helping the staff team with organization of volunteers for campus-wide events used to draw other students into the organization. Did evaluations and vision plans for each student I mentored so they could continue to grow and keep the direction of their life going the way they desired. I learned how to work with Google docs and share documents with others, Facebook event planning and inviting, Excel for schedules and calendars. Lost my fear of the unknown and poured myself into learning everything I could to do my job well.

At first, I loved being an intern with Cru. The sense of calling and purpose was clear and laid out, and I was often encouraged to intern with Cru throughout my years involved as a student. However, the managerial and administrative rote responsibilities came as something I was not expecting. Being praised for my outgoing nature and ability to lead people with energy and zeal, I went into the role not realizing the emphasis that was placed on numbers, effectiveness, and administrative prowess. Being a community oriented person, I valued personal relationships over formal procedures and strategies, and this over the course of time led me to dislike the job. Furthermore, without strict self-discipline, maintaining work-life balance is a consistent struggle for anyone who chooses this field of work (my staff team also expressed this sentiment much of the time). I love the organization and what it stands for of course, but more as a student and a volunteer rather than a someone who works for it. As far as the personal relationships were concerned, I loved the people I worked with deeply, and I always and consistently believed that I could be used as an agent of change in the lives of those I ministered to. I really and thoroughly enjoyed this aspect of the job; this was the most fulfilling part of it.

Working for Cru overseas is a great job, even a privelige.   My responsibilities on a normal day were to learn Chinese language, coach and mentor university students and share my belief with people who had never had maybe never personally come to a resolution on what they believe. Among other responsibilities I also lead logistical operations, leases and agreements between students and local university.

I learned that through a lower structure environment I could grow in personal development, planning, end up thriving in a large range of environments. My management and co-workers were a strong advantage.  We often shared great experiences and traveled together.

In a single statement I can maybe say something about what was the hardest and most enjoyable parts of my job: I worked with the same 6 people as I lived in a small community with these individuals.  Mostly, they were the only people from my own language and culture I would interact with each day.  This was highly valuable because we cultivated deep and valuable relationships, it was challenging because we had to grow as we worked through conflict together over the period of 2 years.

I always had a calendar with 15 minute increments of what I had to do daily and clear instructions.  I learned that all people are either 'people oriented people' or 'time oriented people'.  once that was clear to me, it made my part a lot more targeted and able to be accomplishible.   co-workers seldomly changed, so being a close knit group was essential.  the hardest part of the job was raising support in our home country for the work. it was on us to raise all we had to have to live and that meant extended times staying in America rather than being on the field.  the most enjoyable part of the job was total freedom of creativity was given yet with structurable goals.  the team work was amazing to me as each of us had families and balanced work and family, that was a tremendous feeling of accomplishment when all seemed to go smoothly, and the end result of that task is the happiness and stability of the children we raised in another world.  all we did was greatly rewarding and I do not regret any moments in that entire experience.

I enjoyed my team of leaders whom I served very much.  There were a few leaders who held on to staff so tightly, an unhealthy "ownership" and stifling of advancement occurred.  Basic transition management skills were lacking, therefore created fear for some administrative leaders who did not allow staff to move or advance to new opportunities.   One in particular, often told other departments it would be a "hardship" on her department if someone advanced.  However, from my perspective, this department lacked training and skills allowing for advancement while maintaining forward movement.  Setting up systems that allowed for transfer of information and access to previous information would have avoided any hardship to this department.  Overall, the FST leaders were great and kept me challenged.  The Admin leader was poorly trained in leading her department.  

If your goal is to bring the Gospel of Jesus to people anywhere in the world, work here. Working in America is a lot different than working internationally. In the states you'll most likely be bogged down by a lot of unnecessary admin work and sometimes your work can get in the way of your work if you know what I mean. Working overseas has its challenges for a lot of reasons. Finances within the company are a bit sketchy and you don't get paid a lot (but no ones works for Cru for money).  

The most enjoyable part of the job is obviously seeing people come to know Jesus. 

Most annoying part is probably the company's horrendous internal communication. One person tells you one thing and another person another thing, not to mention decisions get made extremely slowly due to the structure of the company.

Working as an employee at this lounge has been a genuinely rewarding experience. The atmosphere is fun yet relaxed, making it enjoyable to interact with guests who appreciate quality service and ambiance. Management is supportive and communicates clearly, creating a team environment where everyone feels valued. Training was thorough, and I always felt set up for success. The staff works together seamlessly, and there's a strong sense of camaraderie that makes even the busiest nights manageable. Scheduling is fair and flexible, which is a huge plus for work-life balance. Tips are generally excellent, especially on weekends, and reflect the clientele’s appreciation for great service. I’ve learned a lot about upscale dining, cocktail knowledge, and guest engagement, all of which have helped me grow professionally. Overall, it’s a great place to work if you're passionate about hospitality and enjoy working in a lively, fast-paced, yet respectful environment.

A typical day for me would include meeting with two or three women, each individually. I would usually spend a couple of hours with each of them.  Part of the time was spent walking through personal issues they were having, and the rest of the time was spent studying a book of the Bible.  A couple of days a week I would also lead a large group co-ed Bible study. I learned so much about myself and how I interact with others.  It also taught me a lot about time management.  My co-workers were so wonderful.  They encouraged me everyday to be a better "me". The hardest part of my job was being so richly invested in peoples lives.  Sometimes people just don't take your advice.  That hurts when you've poured your heart into them.  The best part of my job was just the opposite.  Seeing people really understand that you love them and want the best for them so they take your advice without question.  That is so rewarding.

I was able to be brought in on a project to work on where we were developing an inventory tracking system via a website form and save the data to an internal database. This would be used to track what was where and with whom, as there was not any similar system in place.

I learned how important it is to document everything you do as you are learning what works and what doesn't work, so that you are able to accurately and quickly show someone else what you did. I was able to learn more about connecting web page forms via PHP to database servers and storing the data in a table.

I enjoyed my time working their immensely and would love to do similar work again. My most enjoyable part of this job was being able to work with someone else as a team, as all my previous experience has all been on my own (School projects).
