Emerson Hospital

My day at Emerson started with me signing in and then heading up stairs to the volunteer lounge. I would then wait until i was an assigned a job that could be delivering a sample to the laboratory, transporting a patient to different areas of the hospital or transporting dirty and clean medical equipment. I gained experience of what a hospital environment is like from an employees perspective as well as hands on patient experience. There was also a sense of community among the volunteers as we spent free time while waiting for jobs playing cards or helping each other study for tests coming up in school. The adult volunteers who got to the more difficult jobs such as transporting special care patients who were in more critical condition than the patients students were allowed to transport, also gave an insight into a different area of a the hospital that we students did not have access to. The hardest part was definitely transporting patients around the hospital. I would feel pain and guilt for the patient as they lay helpless in the hospital bed as i wheeled them along with another volunteer to get a CAT scan. The most enjyable was spending time with other student volunteers and interacting with the adult volunteers.

The workers seem to be more divided into upper or lower class people. I found this odd since it was such a small, private hospital but I'm a quiet person anyway so it didn't bother me but I can say, "they definitely aren't warm to Southerns". I loved that the job was fast pace and organized well in keeping the patients information together and in an orderly fashion. I worked a 4 day,12hr shift, so my least favorite was not having another trained person to help with holding the babies, I would have to get someone from another department to hold. And no matter how much you instruct a person on how to do it and to let them know to have a good grip, when that child screams they forget everything. And lots of times, the key to a successful stick on a baby, comes down to the hold and I didn't have the help. The busy times of the day was before 8 a.m. and after 4 p.m., and I would be the only employee out of 3 working, I explained to management and they did nothing about it! Management was going through changes when I came on board, so it was in a trail and error stage. There was a lot of favoritism, I think mainly due to the new manager leaning on the ones she already knew vs. treating everyone (old and new) as equals.

The pathologists are nice and good to work with

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Complete chaos from lack of management and being forced to produce work that is not the highest quality due to incompetent management 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
There are cliques with blatant disrespect and animosity towards each other that is not just tolerated by management, but encouraged and partaken in by management 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
-take a shuttle from the far parking lot down the street because employees are charged to park in the hospital parking lot 
-Check to see if there are FNA procedures I will be going on
-Screen Non-GYN and FNAs from previous day
-Get disrespected and feel bad
-try to get the printer to um-jam
-maybe screen GYN if the person that processes them feels like doing it. Or sit around until time to go because they didn’t want to process them 
-take a shuttle to the parking lot down the street

Pros -
You will work with people who will become your family. You will LOVE everyone you work with and that is why you will stay. Some patients will be so kind to you that it reminds you why you love coming into work every day.


Cons -
Pay is awful. You can work at a hospital in NH and make more money than you can working the front desk at a hospital in MA. SAD! Seeing departments around you get an extra salary increase this year, but your department received nothing. DISGUSTING!

Some days patients will not be so kind, and you may get yelled at for something that isn't even you're doing.


Advice to Management -

Pay staff more who work in Patient Access. Staff at the front desk, scheduling, pre-registration, and any department that falls under this area. They deserve to have more pay, and they deserve to be treated like they matter to your organization. 

The people who greet patients and are the face of your organization are treated the worst and they take a big hit every day from the verbal abuse from patients, fellow technicians, phelbs, and everyone else around them who are actually making a livable wage. SAD! So SAD!

This personalized approach ensures I learn the technical aspects of medicine and develop the critical thinking and strong communication skills essential for exceptional patient care.
What truly sets this provider apart is its commitment to continuous learning.  The hospital provides ample opportunities for professional development.  There are regular seminars and workshops featuring renowned speakers covering the latest medical advancements. 

There is no doubt that work in the hospital can be demanding. What’s good about this hospital is its management knows how to recognize the demanding nature of healthcare. We have flexible scheduling options that allow me to manage my personal life alongside patient care. This past month, a colleague needed to adjust their schedule for a family emergency, and the team readily covered their shifts. Great company!

In addition, I feel valued here. Everyone practices a strong sense of teamwork. We support each other during demanding situations. During a recent particularly busy night shift, a colleague readily jumped in to assist with a complex case.

Our managers are more than just supervisors because they also care about our well-being and professional development. They regularly check in, offer support, and encourage professional growth.

This supportive environment allows me to focus on what matters most. Overall, it is a win-win – a happy and healthy staff translates to better patient care.

I worked there for just over a year and could not wait to leave. The department went through three managers in my time there and I watched 9 people walk out. Even after leaving, the entire office did a turnover and none of the original staff I worked with stayed. That's how bad it was. The managers had no respect for the employees ESPECIALLY during this pandemic. We were always short staffed. I worked in the cardiology phone center and begged for over a year for more help because my co-worker and I were taking 200 calls by ourselves and staying late to listen to messages while all the office staff had already gone home. We had to take a shuttle everyday. I would arrive a half hour early and still be late for work because I had to wait for the shuttle to arrive. If we wanted to park in the parking lot of the hospital, we would have to pay. There were absolutely no benefits to working there. My time there destroyed my mental health. Would not recommend anyone apply there.

I loved my time at Emerson!  My coworkers were great, and my manager was super flexible when it came to time off and scheduling - I was able to adjust my hours from 8:00-4:30 to 9:00-5:30 to 8:00-6:30 (four 10s), and my direct supervisor was extremely accommodating of last-minute time-off requests.  One of the benefits was a free massage every year, which was great.  The cafeteria served great food and was reasonably priced for employees.  Emerson is still an independent community hospital, not under anyone else's umbrella.  It has an excellent reputation in the community and is well-supported by the community.  The hospital could not function without its volunteer program, and I've heard that kids have to get onto the wait list to volunteer in the summers a couple in advance.

A typical day at work for me consists of me conducting several psychiatric evaluations on patients that are brought into the emergency department.  I have learned to effectively gather information from a patient and relay that information to an on-call psychiatrist to help determine proper level of care.  Management is good and has attempted to be supportive of staff.  My co-workers are positive and work well as a team.  The hardest part of my job is informing patients of a decision made by a psychiatrist that they may not agree with, and trying to find the most effective way in communicating that.  I enjoy the people I work with and the fact that most cases are unique and provide further learning by being hands on.

a typical day was 1-2 cnas wit anywhere from 12-20 patients. The nurses would understand our frustrations and struggles with delegating the floor but would still pile on tasks. I learned a lot visually and about the hospital and gained more experience on patient care. management was understanding most of the time with scheduling and concerns. A lot of effort was put in to make sure protocols and procedures were followed accordingly. The hardest part of the job was the overload of tasks with the floor being understaffed with cnas. It was very stressful and overwhelming.  The most enjoyable part was being able to care for those who can't do so for themselves and putting a smile on their face.
