Working in IT, the environment naturally changes all the time, however right now due to a shift in upper management there is a ton of changes occurring unilaterally.  I feel that each team in IT want to do their own thing, but unless its in the "super important" category laid down by middle management the project that your team has been talking about, and working on for the past year will get pushed aside and lose all traction.

Work days are terribly long, and what used to be a ton of fun is no longer.

Learning is probably the shinning star in this company over the past 2 years I have learned more things than all other years combined.

Management is broken into 4 tiers:  Lower, middle, upper, and executive (duh, right?) - lower tends to want to do the right thing by their employees, middle management tends to micromanage the heck out of their lower managers, upper management doesn't seem like they want to make any direct decisions and the executive team feels disconnected from what is going on in the trenches.

Love my co-workers - this is typically the core reason why I get up in the morning and actually go in, not to mention the culture of the teams are fantastic.

Hardest part of are the requirements out of management - I have heavy requirements of my time and not enough time in the week to do it.  I do not get to spend as much time with my family as I used to (2 years ago) and I see this continuing to get worse.

The most enjoyable parts of the job are the co-workers, and having the ability to learn new things (although learning has slowed down because of the extreme demand for production work which has spiked over the past 2 years).

Overall - I feel that if your not in IT things generally are better, however at the same time things seem very difficult across the company with each department having their own challenges.

They are cutting costs.  Everything is being looked at.  Just put gps trackers in new company vehicles and banned the use of gps and cell phones in the cars.  They want to know when and where you are to compare actual locations to the work you produce.  Cant wait to get the call for hard braking or driving over the speed limit.  God help you if you get caught using your cell phone or gps even in hands free mode.

They have poor pricing and everyone is worried about crazy growth targets.  The "merger" of Brickstreet and Motorist has been a disaster and it will only get worse for 2019.  Meeting growth sales targets with reduced staff and poor insurance pricing is not working and can't wait for the big wigs see final first quarter numbers.  They talk a great thing but in reality it will be shocking to all what is happening.


They are cutting everything to get an A+ rating.   However the numbers are going the other way for retention and new business.

There are rumors that people have been let go for having very expensive health insurance expenses over the last two years.  Sound illegal to me, but I am healthy and at least they can't use high medical expenses against me.

Typical day at work is trying not to walk out the door because you can’t do a job that takes 26 people to accomplish and only 6 employees are working. 
    I learned to slow my pace to get management to see why work isn’t getting done and money is being given to where it shouldn’t be. 
    Management in my department abuses their title and breaks the code of conduct, retaliates, and turns their head. 
    The workplace culture, The company does very well trying to make things go smoothly but the outcome isn’t good. They are always striving to make the company top of the line in the Industry and they meet their goals. When it comes to different departments in the company the problems or issues never get resolved.  They do not abide by their handbook and are very dishonest when situations arise. 
    The hardest part is to walk past employees with their cell phone in their face for 5 hrs and then walking past and their gone for 3 hrs.
    The most enjoyable part of my day was is when I walk out of that building.  I was terminated unlawfully 

Working by yourself most days was great, but with the workload it would become tedious. I worked a lot of overtime to keep up with the work.  Phones were constantly busy so you had to balance out your work based on the phone calls. I enjoyed my job even though it was a busy one. I was loyal and very dedicated to this job. 

We had many management changes, which made it difficult to do our jobs because they did not have the background in the positions the employees held. So, most of ended up training them for their positions. That was definitely a challenge. 

We all worked as a team. There were good days and bad days just like any other job environment, but for the most part I loved working there.

After 18 1/2 years I needed a change because I became burned out handling the death and disability claims by myself and working tons of overtime. There was no room for advancement since the life company was small.

So, now I am looking for something a little different or a mix of administrative/clerical work or data entering.

Great company, extremely poor management! No wonder there are so many perks because the managers are terrible! and very unfair. A lot of OT, a lot of working weekends even though on hire they say every weekend off. Unrealistic work load. No team effort only because of Management doesn't correctly put employees where help is needed, instead they will push who's behind harder even though others are caught up twiddling their thumbs while management is well aware of that, when everyone could just pitch in and help as a team effort. They will give even more work to you when you are already more than behind working as hard as you can, when their "picks" are just sitting around. Bottom line, it's terrible. The perks aren't worth it.

I started working at Encova when it was formerly the Motorists Insurance Group. A couple of years ago, they rebranded and affiliated with another company. It was after this affiliation that things started to go downhill. The information technology team had its staffing cut severely (even though its workload increased). Middle management for the IT team is toxic and creates an unpleasant work environment. The teams can't get along and everyone is always looking to shift the blame. 

Transitional periods are always difficult, but the opportunities at this company have dried up. I don't see anything changing, and I foresee more people going out the door. 

They have an expense issue and are cutting costs and are watching the numbers.  The Motorist side has pulled down Brick Street.

There is an in group and outsider group.  

Almost no advancement and with the merger, everyone is being watched.  My guess is 400 people have left or have been let go in the last two years.  2019 will see more of it based on expense issues and growth.  They want to be cheaper.  


Your boss will tell you one thing but if your numbers are not better than average, watch out.


Also they outsourced a lot of jobs to India in the IT department in November of 2018.  That upset a lot of people, but the word was we need to cut expenses.

My time at BrickStreet was some of the most frustrating but also the most fulfilling times of my career.  Building an insurance company is very scary business but I can't be more proud of what we all accomplished,  I was honored to be a part of the history of BrickStreet.  My opinion mattered.  The workplace culture is very inclusive.  Business units are divided into teams, and everyone works together to make their team profitable, and bonuses are given when that happens.  Profit aside, BrickStreet strives to be very ethical in their treatment of their policyholders and injured workers.

Overall a decent place to start a career.  However a poor place to advance a career.   Due to the very flat organization, and history of only promoting from within a small click, there is zero chance of promotion within loss control.  In the entirety of the organization 's existence, no loss control person has ever been promoted beyond basic day to day loss control.  

The ongoing merger with Motorist has only injected more issues and drama.  Not somewhere I would want to be in the future.

Brickstreet informed employees that they were the company in charge at the beginning of the merger. Turns out Motorists is in charge. The new motto is the Insurance brokers are the clients, not the companies who purchased the coverage. Employees are expenditures, not co-workers. Control every exspence and cut anyone who costs them money. They even let go of an employee a few months after open heart surgery. They’re self employed so they cut him because of the surgery. That’s cold!
