HealthStream

Very good culture, c-level regularly communicates via town halls and quarterly updates.  The company has multiple employee driven teams and leaders are paid a minor stipend to organize/coordinate (events team, sports team, green team, etc.).  Depending on your department and the leadership in that are - you get amazing support, or mediocre at best.  Generally, feedback, suggestions and opinions are valued and I feel vested in my job.  Annual 'Innovation Days' event gives staff opportunities to explore ideas outside their specific job function, and winning ideas can end up on a backlog for development.  The people are amazing and supportive - most of the time they 'want' to help you succeed.  Quarterly PIP goals allow you to determine three goals for your department, and if achieved, you receive 1% of your salary - it's like a 4% increase annually on top of regular reviews.  CEO gave stock to all employees on two occasions.  Career growth and development is challenging.  Some managers will hold you back if they feel you are 'mission critical' to their area.  While we are a workforce development company, leadership puts no value on company staff development.  Budget for training, certifications, conferences is very limited and rarely approved for reimbursement.  They have a scholarship program, it pays up to $1000 (annual application enrollment).  Promotions only happen at the end of the year, but then you are penalized at 'review' time by having any raise prorated - they basically ignore your previous 8 months worth of work, even if in the same department.  Some leadership seems to lack trust in those doing the work and tends to micromanage, resulting in poor outcomes that are then blamed on the team.  Company has no career growth program - you just need to look at the careers site and apply if you want to advance.  Benefits are good, in my opinion - high deductible (2K for individual; 4K for family) - once met, everything else is covered at 100% (with a few small exceptions).  Vision insurance is terrible.

A typical work day for me is coming in and checking the log files and loads from the previous day to make sure that all of my files were processed successfully. Once I have checked all the log files, I go start doing my quality assurance (QA) steps for all of my tasks. 

After all my QA tasks are done, I check my sample inbox (where all of the client files come in) and I go through and mark all of my clients and add their files to my big batch file. Once all of these files have been adjusted so that they can be successfully loaded through the file loader; I start loading all the files. After starting my batch file for the day, I will add all of the files that have come in to my tracking sheet. 

After graduating from college with a degree in Criminal Justice, coming to work in at a job that is so tech savvy and very competitive; I've learned how to work in Voxco, and how to navigate and type some sequences in SQL in Oracle. 

In my opinion, I'm not a fan of our management. Management tries to stay so client focused the entire time, that they forget about the employees and the stress and extra workload that they put on us in order to get everything done on time. Also, they management tells us "that they are always willing to hear our opinions and ways we can improve", however, we never see any of our opinions or ideas ever being put into action. 

The hardest part of my job would be at the beginning and end of a new quarter. During this time, we have so many steps that we have to go through to make sure that the files with the end quarter and new quarter data is processed quickly. We do this so that we can get all of the documentation over to our call center, so they can start making the calls. 

The most enjoyable part of my job would be talking to clients on the phone or over email. I really enjoy talking with people and learning new things that they are doing at their hospitals and how we can incorporate the changes that the client is having at their hospitals at Healthstream and so we can process the files more effectively.

The services HealthStream offers are interesting.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There are a lot of dead end positions at HealthStream. I've had three separate managers offer me promotion paths that didn't actually exist, and I didn't find out about one of them until I'd already been doing what was supposed to be my new job for close to a year on the advice of my manager at that time. HealthStream felt no obligation to honor anything that manager said or offer any kind of resolution. By the time the second manager made their "offer," I was no longer willing to do the new job until something official was in place (and that never came). And now that I've had a third offer made and then retracted by yet another manager, I'm looking for another job.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It varies depending on department. Some departments have a very positive, supportive culture and people who have been there forever. Others are headed by micromanagers, have toxic cultures, and/or have high turnover.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I spend most of my time doing things that are not in my job description and don't have anything to do with my skillset.

A day at HealthStream was not typical. Just the opposite, which I happened to find exciting. Given my experience at the company, inside of the Laurel office, I found myself placed into an "Officer Manager" type of role, and was given duties outside of my responsibilities. Again, there was never a dull moment. I learned how to run a division and manage a team of employees, some in different states. Management in the C-Level was taking more than they were giving. For a medical research and technology company, they did not want to invest in the research of medical technologies. Co-workers ended up being family. We worked long days and nights together, always a phone call away, and forged life-long bonds. The hardest part of the job was being a younger man (30 years old) and earning the trust of those who might have initially been hesitant to follow me in the leadership role which was given to me by upper management. The most enjoyable, or rewarding aspect of my job, was knowing that all across the country I helped contribute to bettering of the hospital experience for those who had to check into the hospital, go to there doctor, or health provider.

The CEO and COO are very passionate and talk a strong vision. However the rest of the core business leaders and units that stem from the corporate (Nashville) office location are dysfunctional. Their lack of experience, foresight and planning has lead to several customers leaving their core platforms and morale is the lowest it has ever been. Customer support is lacking. The company is reactive but slow to course correct. If you truly believe in the vision (helping people) of HealthStream you should look elsewhere. Leaders of this organization would not perform well at other companies. If you are looking for a diverse organization this isn't the place for you. If you are looking for the typical good ole boy club from the South this is a perfect fit.

A typical day at work consist of listening to the ringing of phones, being hung up on, and on occasion cursed at. However, most of the management team would make the day a little better. They weren't uptight or strict but did make sure we abide by the rules. Expectation were kept high during the interviewing process with a consumer. Honestly, the hardest part was conducting the surveys. Not so much reading each script verbatim but dealing with the callers. The other hard part was using the correct terminology or the proper words, for example saying "however" instead of "but". After awhile it became easier. The company offered many incentives and company outings  were very enjoyable. Overall, I would work for this company again. There are a few things that I would like to see changed but somethings are expected from a big corporate company.

They hire interns with great bachelor's degrees and even some with technical advanced degrees to do data entry and call it "data analytics."  I even was offered to work on projects and told directly they were "grunt work." In full-time job interviews, it was tough to answer questions about what I had been doing in my internship because my job tasks had nothing to do with analytics.

They measure their internship program's success by how many interns get jobs, but not by how many get jobs in their field.

The pay is also abysmally below market, though the upside is that they will let you work as an intern indefinitely as you look for a job. 

Culture at HealthStream is laidback, the people are nice, and the products are cool, BUT, I would not recommend it as a place to launch a career. If the work itself was really good experience, it would be a good internship, but it isn't. I wanted so badly for it to work out at HealthStream, but for me, it just didn't.

A typical day at HealthStream is knowing there will be patients to speak with who have had good and not so good experiences at medical facilities. I've learned a lot more medical terms as well as become familiar with how more receptive some regions are than others to give feedback on experiences. Management at HealthStream care about you as an individual and do not see you as a number. By keeping that in mind, a more productive employee is had. The hardest part of the job is finding the patient being called for has passed away. The most enjoyable part of the job is knowing there is a sense of "family". Everyone greets each other with a "good morning" and really mean it when said.  From management to cleaning persons, it does not matter your position. Everyone is seen as a person of value.

While the frontline employees work hard, upper management's priorities are severely misplaced. I spent more than nine years building a strong track record here—consistently delivering top-tier customer service surveys, onboarding and training peers, and doing everything required to be a stellar team player.
Despite my dedication to HealthStream's core values, the reality is that long-term staff are viewed as numbers on a spreadsheet. Employees are easily cast aside to satisfy management-level financial goals and pay structures. If you are looking for a company that values loyalty and hard work, look elsewhere.

Working at Healthstream is not only conducting calls to get feedback about the experiences of patients to help the hospital and/or facilities out. We want to provide the reassurance that they are heard and express any feeling whether is the gratitude of saving ones' life and the negative treatment. The hardest part about the job would be that the time will go slow because you not getting participant to conduct the interview and you get people that can be agitated and aggressive on the  phone. During those time you need to maintain in control, polite, and professional. This is a close knit community that want to see everyone succeed, they are kind-hearted and make the time enjoyable. This job is flexible whether you want to be part-time or full-time they willing to work with your time and they are great rewards if you work really hard.
