This is one of the worst places I have ever worked at. Management appears to be kind and friendly towards you at first, but it is all a façade.  They do not take your complaints seriously, even if you email them consistently.

Nepotism is extremely common here. Ironically, Kern Medical has a Nepotism policy, but it is not followed. There are literal individuals, who have no medical degrees, certifications, etc. that try to tell us what to do in a clinical aspect. 

Workplace culture is one of the worst. I have never experienced such a toxic work environment until working at this place.  Staff members even talk badly about patients as well behind their backs, which I have complained about via email numerous times. It has been ignored of course. They also force/trick patients (literally) to obtain medical services at times.

Work politics is insane here. If you do not agree with their ideology, prepare to experience toxicity. Be wary, the moment you make one wrong turn regardless if it is accidental or not, people will turn against you. 

The only positive and enjoyable part of my job is working with patients. 

I do not recommend working here.

Kern Medical is a great place to work, with a strong sense of purpose and a team that is dedicated to providing quality care to the community. Like any organization, there are always opportunities for improvement, especially when it comes to processes and communication, but the overall experience is very positive. Leadership is engaged, and there are many employees who truly care about their work and the people they serve. The organization also provides opportunities for growth and development, which makes it a rewarding environment for those looking to build a long term career in healthcare. The culture encourages teamwork and resilience, especially during challenging times. While no workplace is perfect, the positives here outweigh the challenges. If you are someone who is passionate about making a difference and being part of a mission driven organization, this is a place where you can feel proud of the work you do and the impact you help make every day.

While I was there for a short amount of time, the coworkers I did work with were very much helpful, friendly and great to talk to. When it came to certain charges and management, that was something less desirable. The clinical manager was super sweet and nice. Department manger, not so much. It was constantly patient numbers and negative staff safety. The charge was less to be desired. I had gotten to work with 1 who was the absolute best. Answered all my new hire/new nurse questions without hesitation and definitely allowed me to grow. The other one, would give me ALL attitude like I had been a nurse my whole life and should know things already. I finally got tired and gave the attitude back and was given a warning from management due to their complaint.  I was always told other hospitals "eat" their young but turns out the person who told me that was doing the same so...While I regret leaving, I don't regret leaving the toxicity there. 

Kern Medical has a reputation in Bakersfield. Some good and some bad. As a worker it’s BAD! Most people who work there have been there over 5 years and don’t leave because they don’t want to lose their benefits. If you’re a new hire just know you’ve lost benefits that older employees have. If you can actually get into this company I would only do it for experience and then move on. Depending on which department you work in you’ll find out very quickly most employees were hired on because they know someone that already works there. 

started as a medical assistant and returned as a new grad nurse. Management seemed more than fair to me personally. Loved the patient population. Pay is lower than other hospitals in the area. Benefits are great. Lots of options for medical, 2 options for dental, 1 option for vision. Good 401k, FSA/HSA, had a sign on bonus as a nurse that was paid out in increments for a period of 2 years, I left before the 2 years and did not have to pay back what I was paid out. Good cafeteria food. Building is old. IT is 3/5 responsive but on site. Cerner EHR. My coworkers were always great and my charge nurses were hands on. They were always more than happy to jump in as assist. 

This place would be a decent place to work if management and the assistant director  would stop trying to micromanage the employees, stopped catering to and playing favorites and pay was fair or at least paid well for what the job actually is, their union is a joke and caters to the managers and supervisors rather than the employees. There is no communication between employees due to management rushing everyone. Above all managenent needs to be overhauled, get rid of the constant micromanaging and trying to find the mistakes and focus on what's being done right rather than focusing on the wrong and never addressing what's right.

Great place for Trauma experience but the pay is terrible as a staff nurse. No yearly raises. Clinical ladder takes years to climb. Understaffed, as most hospitals so you will do all your EKG’s, blood draws, ABG’s, breathing treatments, etc yourself so you must be able to work quickly and prioritize correctly. Very strong teamwork. Team there is like family , everyone helps everyone no matter if you’re a traveler or a staff nurse which is why many stay there at least PRN. High turnover, new grads leave after a year or so of experience and go to higher paying ED’s in town. It’s a revolving door, always has been always will be with the low pay they offer for being a Level II trauma center. 

If you like to be busy, most of the time and love trauma then this is the place for you. There is A LOT of call if you like that. There are 8 OR's. The staff is what keeps me there in honesty. We are more like a family then anything else. We have great surgeons, mostly. I have been a ST for almost 16 yrs and have worked at KM about half of my career. KM is a teaching hospital, I enjoy the pace and watching the medical students grow.  The pay is better then when I started but it is still a bit lower then most hospitals in Bakersfield. That is something we are working on getting raised! 

My 25 years experience in the corrections  has been a good and pleasant experience  for me. I learned new things and enjoyed what I'm doing in my job. My co workers are helpful and supportive  and you can see our team work and we treat each other with respect and dignity. We accept each other for what we are. My director  of nursing had done good things for us to progress. She had supplied as with things we need in our facility and had worked hard to better our situation.She is a good leader and as a person, she has a good heart. I have enjoyed my work, my job, my patients and my co workers. It has been a great pleasure working for Kern Medical

It was a ok place to work, I got along well with my co workers but there were a few supervisors who pick and choose who they show favor and let get away with things, also their is not much mix culture in food service. The point system sucks, if your a second past clock in they give you a point which I feel is not fair at all when they tell you if your 10 minutes late they won't give you a point, that's not true; but others have pointed out and their still employed (favoritism) Other than that I learned a lot from every co worker who trained me, Thank you ladies and gentlemen for teaching me well.
