Overall it was a good job, although I was underpaid for my position, due to the circumstances of how I achieved it--being promoted from clerical work into a Medical Billing Specialist position, instead of being hired as a Medical Billing Specialist right off the bat. A typical workday varied with my time there, as I was moved across several different clients during my tenure, but overall I was always responsible for working the Open AR and Denials created within the scope of the practice assigned to me (a specific set of offices, a specific specialty, or--on my last client, all of the Medicaid tasks and denials).

The workplace culture was always very positive, in my experience. Across the four teams, and seven excellent supervisors I worked under in my time I never felt like I couldn't go to a manager or teammate with an issue I was having trouble with. The AR department always, to me, had the feel that we were all in it together.

I learned everything I know about Medical Billing through my experience with NextGen, as I began as a Billing Assistant temp working part-time to assist in a backlog of correspondence that needed to be scanned into the electronic databases and grouped according to the practice it was tied to. After exceeding expectations with how quickly the scanning was done, I was assigned to assist in locating primary EOBs and mailing secondary claims. Eventually this led to my supervisor suggesting I would make a good Biller, and after an interview and training, I did, in fact, have success as a Medical Billing Specialist, working with over a dozen medical specialties across a half dozen clients, in four separate states.

This was a great place to work at one time.  It was far from perfect and in need of serious improvement and organization. But employees were respected, appreciated, recognized for their dedication and effort.

The current leadership has decimated the company, culture, and morale. They are having endless layoffs, continuous deception, reduced bonuses and ratings for those that do the work, yet those at the top are gaming the system to give themselves higher salaries, excessive bonuses and stock options. It is a shell of what it once was. Those that did the hard work and stayed (while receiving low pay) due to their commitment to the company, team members, and clients were removed like a cancer, while those making these decisions and benefiting are the true cancer.

Initially, I was enthusiastic about joining this company. However, after starting, the company's true culture became apparent. Ineffective internal and external communication led to frustration among clients and colleagues during projects. I worked under three different directors, each with distinct expectations and shifting priorities regarding billable hours. The company now focuses excessively on billing for every interaction, resulting in duplicate charges and budget overruns. Concerns are often dismissed or downplayed, and direct managers have limited authority over their teams, leading to ongoing miscommunication and misunderstandings.

Following a recent acquisition, the company experienced significant layoffs. Despite denying the second round of  layoffs during a company-wide meeting, upper management has indicated plans to hire new employees. A portion of the workload has been outsourced to India, but insufficient training and experience have caused implementation issues. Former Cerner personnel have become the majority in upper management, and the company's operations have become more centralized and less collaborative

Stay away from Nextgen. I was given no training and thrown into live production support/installations - it was a nightmare. So many people there are burnt out zombies from huge project loads and lack of support from management. Which reminds me... the managers act like children and will not help you. I begged my manager for some time to help with the most critical issues that I could not resolve. He set aside 2 hours for a meeting to work on issues. I received 10 minutes of attention during that 2 hours. Most of his time was spent cursing other analysts who sent him questions asking for help. Look, the bottom line is that Nextgen sounds like it used to be a great place to work, but that is not the case now. You will be overworked and have no support from management. Typical answers to questions will result in you being handed 500 - 2000 pages of documentation and told to figure it out. Seriously, stay away.

Nextgen Healthcare is a wonderful company to work for. I could not complain. They have great benefits. A typical day at work would consist of logging into my phone immediately and taking phone calls from patients regarding their accounts. In between calls I would work the past due AR report, handle voicemails, declined credit card payments and follow up with insurance companies regarding denied claims. The management at Nextgen are wonderful. They were easy to talk to but at the same time expected nothing more or less than effective and efficient work. The hardest part of my day would be having a patient that I cannot assist with lowering the balance. Usually that situation would involve a patient not knowing their insurance policy prior to the appointment. My most enjoyable part of working at Nextgen is because each patient has a different situation, it makes my day go by faster due to it not being repetitive work.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I loved working here, but the layoffs are an issue. They push more and more to fully automate and outsource. They have since being aquired. If your young great stepping stone and I recommend it as you'll gain great experience. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The constant fear of being replaceable, but if your a fast and smart worker you can move up in ranks, but it can be based on department and who your in with which is not ideal.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It really depends on the department you are in and who you report to. I was in AR for years then QA and QA was wonderful, but they downsized and outsourced so there is that. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Work and Meetings, but overall once you know what you are doing its very laid back, but you gotta work smart and make yourself irreplaceable or you won't last or you'll be stuck in a role you outgrow.

NextGen started as a small company. During the period from 2005 from 2010, they grew from 70 employees to about 1500 employees. I started at NextGen in 2006 and in the first year they went from about 250 employees to over 500. They became one of the most successful healthcare software companies and got good reviews from customers. They did not however control the growth and kept promising more than they were able to deliver. This led to many missed deadlines and customer dissatisfaction. They are trying to turn it around now but old habits die hard.
They are in the right business and I hope that they turn it around with the new web-based version of the software that is planned.
I enjoyed my time working at NextGen and am sorry that they were not able to maintain their position in the healthcare market.

Completely remote company.  Hours are somewhat flexible just as long as you get your work done.

There have been some recent changes in management and when I said crossroads in my summary, I meant the path the company goes from here is at a crossroads.

The new management is bringing a lot of former colleagues in which has resulted in somewhat of a division between old and new.

I believe change is good for growing, but when you start making changes without understanding what's currently implemented, you run the risk of causing more frustration and a lot more problems.

Management should spend a little more time understanding what is currently in play, and involve veteran employees.  Then embrace the good, improving on it while working to get rid of the bad.

You don't want to look like Elon carrying in the sink.

If you're new to the market, NextGen would be a great place to start and get some experience under your belt.  

I worked at NextGen Healthcare full-time for more than 3 years. Pay attention to the small people at the company, you guys are not fortune 500 where you can afford to lose hardworking employees if the glassdoor rating is any indication, NXG is not a great place to work at.
Increase employee bonus's from 2%. Pay your employees to Market rate.
If the staff is leaving, then there is something clearly wrong with management, look to make a change.

NextGen Healthcare is slowing but consistently doing multiple person and in some cases FULL dept layoffs or is in the process of transitioning to offshore in India or in the Philippines due to lower labor costs. 
They are on their 8th or 9th layoff in 8 yrs and a year has not gone by since where there haven't been layoffs of some kind. NextGen just announced internally that they will be moving all development to India and shutting down US R&D, QA, and related depts. By end of June the will announcing other depts that will be transitioned as well. 
Word is that their US support dept & teams will either be hugely downsized if not completed shut down with all support and development going to India.
