What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I worked at OUHealth as a Cancer Registrar for approximately a year and a half. My initial experience was positive, and I performed consistently well in my role, meeting expectations and supporting the department effectively.
However, my experience changed sharply at the end of my employment. I was informed that a performance improvement plan was being considered and was led to believe there would be a structured process to address any concerns. Instead, I was abruptly terminated shortly thereafter, without being given the opportunity to engage in the process that had been communicated.
The termination felt sudden and lacked clear, consistent communication or transparency. Expectations were not clearly defined, and I was not provided with a meaningful opportunity to understand or respond to the decision before it was finalized. At the time, I had no significant performance issues on record and had previously received positive feedback.
The handling of the termination raised serious concerns for me regarding consistency in performance management and communication practices. The contrast between prior feedback and the final decision was abrupt and difficult to reconcile.
While I value the experience gained during my time there, I would strongly advise prospective employees to carefully consider that performance processes and termination decisions may not be clearly communicated or consistently applied.

Ask about current system priorities, the OU Health Way framework, and how your team contributes to enterprise goals. Expect a fast pace—and a lot of support to help you navigate it.


I enjoy working at OU. The only thing is I wish they offered flexishifts. 12 hr shifts are inconvenient and long for a growing family. I’ve had lots of bad personal issues (death, sickness, horrible pregnancy, and mobility issues) during my tenure at OU and my manager and supervisors have been so understandable even on short notice. This is one of the most positive experiences with a managerial team I’ve ever had. I love the team work, floor supervisors know a whole lot in terms of actual patient care and are very helpful and great resources. They are very helpful and I feel secure in knowing I have someone knowledgeable always available that wants to help. The work can be a lot some days just because of the type of area I work in but for the most part we aren’t understaffed. Usually the patient load is ok. Only twice have I ever had two ventilated patients and one of those times was because I got an admission (had the only open bed) and she was vented, along with my original patient. I feel fairly assigned. There are often lots of teamwork. I don’t like how they make nurses take out the trash but I guess it’s small things compared to their great benefits and pretty decent pay. My pay is actually pretty good there. With differentials I make a good salary. Only reason I may move eventually is because of the long 12 hr shifts and I have two young children. But that’s more due to the nursing job in general in a hospital setting , than the institution. 

OU Medicine/OU Health touts a great mission but has a toxic culture filled with petty politics and no work/life balance. Management has a vision for being a leading academic healthcare system, but builds it by under-staffing projects, over-working everyone and blaming those who did the work.  On a positive note, during COVID, the company did not layoff staff.

A typical day is filled with lots of meetings and layers of bureaucracy for everything while getting constant pressure from leaders to deliver multiple projects on time.  The hardest part of the job is that executives and doctors constantly throw new projects at staff with little regard to staffing or stress levels.  Communication is almost all top-down, despite token efforts to change culture and listen.  I learned that to succeed you must excel at playing politics across multiple campuses.  Some of us in IT have been on call every weekend for years.  Company does provide job-related training, but may request reimbursement if you leave.

The most enjoyable part of the job is some really great co-workers trying to deliver great care to patients in a difficult environment.  In two years, I did get one single thank-you email from a supervisor, so that's nice.
 

My experience just keeps getting worse!  I worked for the cancer registry and they claimed that I intentionally didn’t clock in and out on my own, violating their policy. Who would do that ‘intentionally’? My performance never had a red mark. I met every single deadline and took pride in my work. They told me I had a Level 1 warning and the next would be Level 2. Instead of doing what they said and (following their own policy!), they terminated me with no warning. I have no access to my emails or records to show the paper trail of how dishonest they were. I worked remotely and I was hired all the way across the country from the institution. They gave me a hard time when I asked if I could live in a state that bordered them (a move to support my family)—right after saying: ‘we only allow remote work in states that border us.’ Their ‘policies’ are the most unintelligent, hypocritical and ignorant I have ever seen up close in an institution that I’ve worked in. I still have their equipment after 5 months and multiple unanswered emails regarding it. They said they would send it the week that they terminated me. COMPLETE JOKE.  Run by petulant children. AVOID unless you want to work in a toxic environment with claims to care for their patients but treat their faithful employees who do hard work and meet all deadlines, like they are a number. The jokes just keep on coming. Do not ever here! I’ve seen it all, now. Don’t trust this institution. You will be working with toddlers. 

This is truly the worst place to work. Our unit was constantly understaffed and safe patient care became an issue. AWHONN standards were set but Women's Services could never meet them as their turn-over rate is so high. Management has no regard for staff nurses and staff are always "walking on eggshells" for fear of getting written up. It seems their focus is on punitive processes instead of trying to find out why employees are unhappy. The new director stated in a staff meeting, after an employee stated the morale was low on her unit, that she (director) was not responsible for anyone's morale. Basically, the leadership team has zero accountability for unit morale. This should tell you they don't care about the staff.
BEWARE when you apply for a position within Women's Services!!
I would highly discourage it and encourage you to look into other organizations before applying here.
Please know, I'm not disgruntled. I loved my co-workers and taking care of the patients but I work to live and Women's Services motto is live to work. They don't care about your work/home balance like they'll claim.

A typical day at OU physicians was horrible not only did I always felt like I was always walking on egg shells around my co workers but no where else have I ever worked that someone could walk into work every day late and have her time care adjusted by her work buddy while everyone else  busted there  butts to make to work on time.  Not only did the we have  to deal with fraud on that end but the constant gossip and belittling of the patients about how they smelled or looked by the so called leads of the department and a rotten manager who never did a thing to fix it. I learned that just because you have a older woman who works in an office as a lead that does not qualify her for that job.  OU does not do enough research before they hire people to run their clinics.  They are all about the numbers and the rules and not about the patients. The hardest part of the job was having to do not only my job but that of my desk mate because she could not multitask but then again she would come in late on average 5-10 minutes late daily so she was never made to do anything or answer to anyone. I would never ever recommend OU Physicians/OU Medical to work for ever.  If you are smart go to Integris.

Management does not care. This entire hospital had gone downhill over the course of a year. We have to use PTO for holidays that our offices are closed and they won’t let you work anywhere else to accommodate. They stripped us of our 401k matching and took away 8 collective PTO days to “save money” from COVID. Executorial bonuses were NOT paused. Administrative bonuses were NOT paused. I have never worked for a company that cared for its employees less than OU Health does. They forced all of us to take time out of our offices to go to “transformation meetings” and discuss all of these issues and nothing came from it. We have “huddles” every morning and management does not bring up our concerns to anyone EDIT- these morning meetings have been canceled and management does not even attend them anymore. They do not pay for license/certification renewals and do not reimburse you for them because they do not require you to be certified EDIT- They do now require you to be certified but still won’t compensate for those renewals. They switched our EMR system with little to no training. They pay an average of $2 less than the state median for every position. Do not work here.

Pros:
My coworkers were supportive, hardworking, and genuinely caring. They were the primary reason the job remained tolerable despite ongoing challenges.

Cons:
Management shows little to no concern for employees. Over the time spent with the organization, morale declined significantly. Employees are required to use PTO for holidays when offices are closed, with no alternative work accommodations allowed. Executive and administrative bonuses were not paused, while benefits and resources for employees were cut.

Staff were repeatedly required to attend meetings that were paid; however, employees were expected to use their lunch breaks to voice concerns. Despite this, no meaningful changes resulted. Daily huddles failed to address employee issues and were repeatedly canceled, restarted, and then canceled again. License and certification renewals were not covered or reimbursed; even after certifications became mandatory, compensation for renewals was still not provided.

Overall:
This is the least employee-focused organization I have worked for. Concerns are consistently ignored, benefits have been reduced, and compensation is below market. I would not recommend working here.


A typical day as a Health Unit Coordinator in the NICU consisted of many things! All of which are listed on my resume.
I have learned a lot from this job. Things such as how to deal with threatening situations to dealing with comforting families in need. I have learned more than I ever thought I would about xerox machines and how to repair them! The list of things I have learned here could go on for days. 
The management always varied..it seemed to change every six months which I believe is not a good way to keep up with a good work enviornment, but they did the best they could!
I loved my co-workers. A lot of easy going people that I got along with wonderfully. 
I would have to say the hardest part of my job was dealing with the new managers that did not understand our position and it is very hard to work at a place that makes you feel you are not useful when I know I am very helpful to all of the nurses because they made sure to tell me everyday!
That was one of the most enjoyable part of my job! Knowing that I contribute to a great thing and the nurses knowing too!
