A typical day at work begins with collecting the oldest claims to be processed first.  They were usually assigned to me at the end of the previous day.  I'd go to my locked drawer and collect them.  Two monitors were opened at my cubicle; one for processing, one for research.  Any questions I had were taken or emailed to the proper person, my auditor or trainer.  I would start with the oldest claims first, processing those, and any claim types that had a large volume.  I knew how to process every claim type, so there were few questions.  Processed claims until breaks, and continue to do so afterwards.  If anything was rerouted to me from another department, those would take priority because most likely they were older than the claims on my desk.  At the end of the day, my incomplete work went back into a locked drawer (HIPAA reasons) and I would clock out.

In this particular job I learned HCPC and ICD9 codes, how to manually price based on various rates, how to apply other insurance payments to our payments, how to prioritize claims, where to send for what research, and how to manually enter these claims.  When I started at the company, we manually entered them.  When I left, the claims were automatically loaded into the system and I would process from there.

Management was constantly changing.  I worked in a very small veteran unit of processors.  When management and supervisors changed, we still got the work done.  Coworkers were great people to work with.  Our unit worked very well together.

The hardest part of the job was the constant pressure to produce more, and to pay or deny (correctly) as many claims as possible.

The most enjoyable part of the job was where I could listen to my music player with headphones.  I knew my job well enough that I didn't have to leave my desk often, and to keep my focus, I'd listen to music.  All I did was process, there were no phones on my desk to answer.  I could focus entirely on work and tune out the office noise and distractions.

PHC is overall a good place to work, DEPENDING on the department you are in and your management team. Some departments are not so great and need an overhaul of leadership, while other departments are really great to work in, and have brought in new people that have helped the departments continue to grow with the times. 
There is a lot of career growth potential, with the right managers. For others, they will stay in their same position and level forever because their managers never promote, so there is a lot of inconsistency to promotions across departments. 
Interestingly, some departments seem to need more staff to support their functions but cannot get jobs approved, while other departments/teams are way overstaffed, with team members not having enough work to even fill an FTE role, yet they are able to continue to get more postions approved without any additional work to do, which creates stress for the existing team members, knowing they will lose more work and have less to do to keep them busy. 
While the benefits package is great, compensation is dismal, and some staff are paid more that have less experience...managers view some positions as worth more than others and therefore pay those people more even if they have less experience and are in a lower pay grade than other positions. 

Leadership at PHC excels at communicating important initiatives and updates to staff, contributing to the exceptional work culture. The collaborative spirit among employees makes for a rewarding professional environment.

My one suggestion for improvement would be reconsidering how exempt employees are managed. True to their classification, exempt staff should be freed from hourly tracking requirements and shift designations, allowing for greater flexibility and autonomy.

Overall, PHC stands out as an employer that values its workforce and creates conditions for professional satisfaction and growth.

If you are a member of PHC (meaning you get MediCal from the state), then you are in good hands here.

But... if you are an employee of this mom & pop shop, run, run, RUN as fast as you can.

Upper management cares more about the "most important holiday on the calendar" than they do about training their staff. (What holiday is that?  Halloween. For some strange reason, upper management thinks making a big thing about Halloween will make all of the awful days at work seem somehow better).

Absolutely NO training for staff. Most people use Microsoft Office throughout the day and don't even know how to use it. Secretaries and receptionists send out executive emails so you never know whether the information is important or not.

For some reason, management built a walking path along side the giant 680 Freeway and thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Inhaling those fumes, having ticks fall on your head, all so you can walk outside for your good health.  Clueless!

They hired me because I was an expert at what I did. When I tried to do my job, I was told not to and just deliver some stupid little projects that benefited nobody.

I've never seen a cluster-mess like Partnership Healthplan of California. Never.

As a nurse I worked for this company for a short period of time. 
If you are in healthcare and came from a clinical role do not work here. The environment is very corporate, management is fake, and they will lie to your face about accommodations to either your work or scheduling. Never plan to get pregnant, have doctors appointments, or get sick within the first 3 months you work here. If you do, you will be fired. 

If you are looking for growth, this is not the place for you are a nurse. There’s really no where to go other than upper management for nursing, you are better off working for a healthcare system. 
Also, very cliquey. If you are not social and don’t enjoy small talk do not work here. 
My first week was full of “meetings” which weren’t actually meetings. If you want to feel fulfilled do not work here. Most of the nurses have active licenses but zero clinical expertise which concerns me due to the fact that you still have to think critically in this role. These people are approving care plans for patients and don’t really understand why they are doing it. 


Overall if you enjoy office environments go for it. But if you are coming from bedside it will be difficult. Management was the worst part for myself 

I thought this was going a great company to work for. After sometime here I realize the leadership does not promote an open door policy and does not support staff members to work out any issues, differences or conflict. The HR department is all about supporting management and not hearing the employee's side of the things. I would not recommend anyone to work in this kind of environment. Although they say that they support staff and departments to communicate with each other, their actions do not back up any communication and in fact promotes not talking to each other. Upper management including the Regional Director play favorites and make it very obvious, if you are in the claims department your word is gold and you are protected. My direct supervisor had no relationship skills and did not ever have my back or support me to be successful, she herself has been scrutinized and demoted due to poor management. So disappointed with this company, management and HR.

I worked for this company for many yrs and watched people who had been there for many years get pushed aside while employees who had just started move to higher positions. Quite sad that this company no longer is all about the employees. They fire people left and right for having personal issues that are beyond anyone's control while keeping employees who have been caught & tested for drinking & doing drugs at work. These same people came back from their 90 day punishment of counseling, and where given promotions and raises within the week. What kind of company does that? Fires the hard working employees and gives promotions & raises &  keeps the ones who drink & do drugs at work. Specially a company who is suppose to be about the people. The HR department is the worst, employees get scared of confiding in HR 1. they do absolutely NOTHING, & 2 if they do decided to do something it more then likely will be nothing but a stab in the back and retaliation against you, whether it be glares or mocking.  

Doesn't matter what department you are in. This company is so full of themselves. Its like they honestly allow management to choose their favoriates, and these are the workers who get to move ahead, regardless of the yrs you've been there. I was let go because my house was broken into & my identity was stole. I received threatening calls to my work line from the scammer who stole my identity. Out of the 5yrs I worked there I have never had an issue with my attendance. The one time my life isn't Balanced with work and I am fired for unexcused absences. When just the month before I was nominated for employee of the quarter. This company is so unfair and has never given an equal opportunity to any of its employees. I HIGHLY suggest to never work here. unless you want to be personally judged, ridiculed, & never have any opportunity to move ahead. 

I hoped to retire from PHC, but the management in Redding is awful.  I am passionate about helping others, but the constant drama, gossip, managers retaliating and harassing the staff is just too much. Staff turnover is constant and training new staff is very fractured. Many of the company's departments are being run well, but not Health Services. It's appalling how staff is treated. Favoritism is on constant display and the staff does not get recognized for great work. The shadiness of this company in Redding goes all the way up to the new director of the office. Our old CEO retired a few years ago, and he is sorely missed. The new upper management is reasonable, but the HR is sorely lacking and shows.

The job was tolerable, the pay and benefits were amazing but not worth the way you get treated. I cant help but exclaim if you are NOT in that inner circle they will show it. They are not afraid to talk bad about you (management, co-workers and leads) im not talking about job wise either. Management will do anything to prevent you to move up if they don't like you. The environment is toxic and it is extremely hard to stay positive in. I hoped being there for some time would enlighten things but never did it just got worse; the expectations and the way they treat you. It doesn't matter if your good at the job like i said if they don't like you they show it and they will do anything to drive you away/out. They pay and benefits can only get you so far but not worth the mental games they put you through it really makes you question your self worth.
