This is nothing but a call center that only cares about people being available to take calls.  You will have the title of underwriter but will never be trained. New products will be rolled out to agencies days before u find out about it and you are expected to read the form and be able to sell it. Management is awful and could care less how stressed out the team is.  They lose great team members and then hold meetings said it’s just more positive turnover.  How is losing someone with 20 years of experience positive turnover. They pick favorites and give them special projects to make them seem more important than other team members but actually they just don’t want to do their own work so it gets passed on to other. When someone leaves we are told that they will not be replaced and more work will just be added to people already overwhelmed.  We are giving projects on top of already being overworked and told to get it done by any means necessary so bonus goals can be met but management sees all of the larger bonuses not the everyday employee that is working 10-12 hrs a day and still cannot catch up.  Your work will be graded like you are in school and if you make two mistakes in a quarter you will be called into a meeting and threatened with termination. Management will call u on computer calls and speak down to u so others can hear and hang up in your face if they don’t like your honest answers.  Nothing is confidential and this was confirmed as upper management conducted a meeting with me and told me that everything that is talked about in skip level meetings is brought back to them so they know everything we say about them.  If you do complain they will retaliate.  Once after asking for more money I was told to quit and reapply as they would hire new hires making more than long term employees.  They monitor calls, emails and IM’s and if u step away from the phone or go into after call wrap up for more than a few mins they will make u ready to get a holding call no matter what u may be working on. They blame turnover on us just wanting to want remote work and this is not true.  It’s due to disconnected management that could care less about their people. I left and my job is not remote and pays less but I wish I had left 10 years ago. 

This was the worst place I have ever worked. Management  is clueless, workload should be called overload with unreasonable expectations. Management only care about their inflated egos and could care less about how overloaded you are they just want the work done! They provide no guidance,  procedures or systems to help you succeed! You are completely set up for failure. Software is completely outdated!!! Most employees put minimal info in the antiquated system to stay under the radar! Management has no clue how to even use the system, let alone what information is in it, so there is NO help or training! You spend hours teaching yourself how to navigate through and create your own systems and documents just to stay afloat, then when you think you are finally getting some actual work done, management changes lanes (for absolutely no real reason) and doesn’t bother telling you. “Red-Penning” is what I like to call it, they just like to make unnecessary remarks and changes that waste time to make sure you know they are in charge and you are beneath them. They want you to think you are part of the “team” but there is no time it’s every man/woman for themselves and all you do is CYA (cover your a#*) which wastes more time. One day it’s done one way, then when you follow that and the next time, they will, once again, “red-pen” and change how they want it. Management has NO CLUE how long it takes to do work assignments and they don’t want to hear it or care they just want it done! They expect you to figure out how to get it all done without working OT because they won’t approve any OT. They lie, shift-blame, take credit for work they did not do and will not blink an eye at throwing you under the bus. They don’t bother telling you about important decisions within your department and make you feel like you’re inadequate, and I think they like you to feel that way!!! It’s how they micromanage, control and make you question your work ethic and capabilities! This place is 100% NOT WORTH IT!

Selective has made a quick decent downhill in recent years as far as its appreciation for employees.  We are all overworked, over stressed, and under appreciated.  Our so called new systems are antiquated, several years old, and some of them aren't even supported by the vendors because they are such old versions of the product.  Last year we had a short window with numerous new systems and redesigns that all simply fell apart.  Insureds and agents are experiencing long hold times when trying to reach us, inaccurate bills,  and numerous other issues.  Employees are expected to work longer hours and take on more duties without any appreciation or compensation. 
 Underwriters are salaried so no opportunity for overtime despite most of them working 50-60 hour week.  Funds for our employee appreciation day last year were donated to charity without input from employees about if they wanted to do this and we weren't consulted with about what charity.  Years past involved us going off site for an actual employee appreciation day.  Ops manager in Richmond is quick to share his political views and holds himself in high regard.   It's not a good time to speak out about your love of Reagan, your guns, etc.  Most everyone is on verge of nervous breakdown with the work loads expected and you frequently come across people crying at their desks.  Very sad, it's not what it used to be under prior management.

If you are reading this, you should consider looking elsewhere. I am a current employee and although I really used to enjoy my time here I assure you this has become a "sweat shop" and no one is happy anymore. It is really sad to see this place go downhill and take a toll on these people. This is a good group of people who are simply overworked.

 Management is hardly around and when they are it seems they are just around to be visible. You will be overworked once you get a full book. The company is growing which is great to see however, the lack of additional employees is where the issue comes in. If you do land a position here expect:

* 50-60 hour work week
* Terrible Management
* Low Salary compared to the market. (especially if you calculate all the unpaid OT since you will be Salary)  
*There is some room for advancement but don't expect a huge increase in pay. 
* High Turnover 
* SLOW in getting new hires on board (in hopes to save more $) 
* Prepare to be dumped on and have an extremely high workload.
* Work from home opportunity (2 days or so a week). 
* 12/13 paid holidays and decent PTO days. (18 to start)

Good Luck but look elsewhere unless this is a last resort.

The absolute best part of this company is the people. Management does a great job in selecting candidates and the hybrid work environment helps to maintain that. Company listened to the complaints surrounding three days in the office two from home and adjusted to three days home.

The underwriting role here covers a lot of ground that should be handled in other departments. This results in more time being spent doing customer service type work and less on underwriting, Books of business seem to be larger than they should be to handle the amount of other work. Makes work-life balance hard and you hear a lot of people working late/over the weekend just to stay afloat.

Benefits are solid, but seem below industry standard in salary. Overall good company, with good internal systems, but struggle with work-load and work-life balance.

lot of favoritism and a lack of integrity throughout the agency,People are easily promoted if you are well liked by the Director.People are promoted without the proper credentials and experience. most of the managers do not say "hi" when you try to talk with them, too much racially separated, even security guard does not wish you, you have to work according to there work culture if not you were targeted to the point of false accusations.
Manager had favorite employees who could do anything and get away with it. Hard workers are taken advantage of and slackers are praised. Personal relationships impacted job duties, if you weren't "in" you were made to do all the duties no one liked doing.HR has issues with resolving employee conflict. stay away from this place.

Coming into work in the morning, I did not feel stressed or worried about the day ahead. I was excited to work with the managers and achieve the tasks they assigned to me. The managers did an excellent job informing me on the bigger picture of these tasks as it made me feel part of something more. All the employees around my cubicle were friendly, inviting and were open to helping me with the task on hand. From the Seasonal Support job, I acquired substantial knowledge in the programs like Excel, Ariba and many others that were used daily by the Accountants. The job was challenging at times, but through the weeks, I became more adaptable and over came those challenges. For a Sophomore in college, I believe that I have acquired the experience that is necessary for me to apply that knowledge to any job in the business field.

I started working for Selective in January at 100% remote and then the company pivoted to a hybrid schedule so that we could go from attending Zoom meetings from home to attending them from the office three days a week. When I brought up the fact that the company was demanding we return to the office as gas prices began to rise, they refused to consider remaining 100% remote citing "company policy."  Meanwhile, no one in the office wears a mask. No one wears their mandatory contact tracing device. And no one honors the 6ft social distance rule. To be forced to return to an office just to be exposed to the same old office antics is a tremendous disappointment. Knowing that people are more productive working from home, makes one wonder why employers are really demanding a return to the office. 

They claim to be high tech however they aren't.   They system used are antique.   Even when they do "upgrade"  they purchase the cheapest version of a product.   They don't accept questions from employees.   If you question anything you are labeled.   They don't address problem or problem employees,  they brush them aside and hope they "go away on their own".   Management holds themselves in hire regard.  Most of them,  not all,  seem to think they are the best thing that happened to the company.   They treat their employees like peons.   Turnover is at all-time high.   The dynamics of working on corporate are so ridiculous once you look back.  Don't get me wrong,  there are a few departments that seem to be great to work on but overall,  they pay minimum but expect the world

This is a company that wants to see you grow. You can pass people in th halls and expect a smile or a hello. The CEO will even run into you occasionally and chat with you. There’s a LOT of work and you’re never caught up. That’s the really tough thing. The work is very tedious and requires at least 50-60 hours a week if you want to be someone caught up. The work/ life balance is a little tough. There definitely needs to be more employees to help lighten the load. The company is growing fast with a push for more and more business so the renewals are piling up and becoming harder to manage. However, there are always coworkers willing to help out if they can. Management is pretty good too.
