Tatte Bakery & Cafe

Working at Tatte had its draws, working in a seemingly quaint cafe service locally baked goods to customers and working for a local business. The actual experience is quite different. While working at Tatte it is easy to see how the greed of the executive team effects all areas of the work, mainly while trying to run the cafe with as little people as possible even though they pay less than minimum wage thanks to the generous customers tips and give you a 30min break no matter a 12h shift (they happen often) or an 7h shift. Company policy calls for only two free drinks while working and then half off meals. No discounts on pastries or other drinks unless it is past due date or a messed up order. You feel like you are working at a multinational conglomerate rather than a locally owned business and the only input heard from the local owner are criticisms. Training for Tatte was clearly rushed and then you are left alone to fend for yourself because everyone around you is too busy all day to answer questions. If you are not packing food or working with customers by taking their orders and giving them pastries and coffee, you are cleaning or managing inventory. Unless working at a cafe to you means scraping dirty dishes or scrubbing toilets while stressing the entire day about the amount of tasks that need to be done, don’t work here. The ‘cafe’ aspect is a minute part of the position. I always felt like a glorified janitor that gets tips from customers. 

This has to be the worst customer/food service job I have ever worked in, particularly because of the management and culture. For one, they do not feed their workers, no matter how long your shift is. The managers micromanage employees and have serious attitude/tone problems. The amount of times I have been spoken to rudely/condescendingly by a manager is insane. 

They seem to only retain employees through intimidation and the fact that tips are good (but btw they pay below minimum wage because of it...and still can't feed us??), but it's no secret that every employee here hates it. It's a shame because the other bottom-level employees are very fun and kind, but it is frowned upon to strike up a side conversation at any point and build team bonds. I dread walking into this place and feel terrible about myself by the time I leave, even when I did a great job. I don't recommend this to anyone unless you want to shatter your self-esteem. 

##A typical day at work is busy and fast-paced. Your happiness depends on your team and the management you work with. Having an unhelpful manager will leave you physically and mentally exhausted in your duties. The workplace culture does not facilitate a healthy relationship or actionable resolutions regarding situations with problematic teammates.

##The hardest part of the job is knowing there's very limited opportunity for advancement. The stress is worth the pay in the short term, but constant transferring and downgrading of managers to your location will wear down your morale and remind you that unqualified outsiders will always be given the higher positions before you.

##The most enjoyable part of the job is spending time with and learning more about your positive teammates.

Managers at the company are almost all new. The company prioritizes opening new stores rather than properly training management. Which results in a very inefficient place to be in. Apart from the culture that is represented in the policy/rule book. It seems that the manager does not cater to that ideal, and would often violate it, and defend their actions because of their position. Otherwise, co-workers are great. We cooperate very well with each other and is easy to make friends. But the hardest part of the job isn’t the traffic of customers, or knowing a name of the food ir beverage or pastries. But the hardest is to not step on egg shells amongst management, who almost, if not all of them have a god complex. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Interacting with customers and having great conversations as well 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The over amount of stress and anxiety, and unrealistic expectations that are set by management

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Highly Toxic, Management would talk poorly about employees behind their backs, constantly complaining about how "hard" their job is and that they just want to go home because there "tired" and don't want to be at said location any longer.  In addition, management would constantly yelling at staff members for asking questions 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
TERRIBLE,  I would always fear being yelled at for not understanding something or for wanting to even ask a question

Working at Tatte was nonstop stress, between demands of bosses, requests of guests (which you had to accommodate but also, no sorry I know it's dumb but I cant hard scramble your eggs. Idk why either), and taking care of the team. You always felt like you were on call and there were no "small misses" everything was considered to be very important, even if it really wasn't or if you had to call the police on someone trying to camp in the bathroom so you missed a non-essential task at close. I did not feel like my personal life and self was respected, and I did not feel like my skills were being utilized nor was the promised development put into place. 

Solid place to work full or part time if you're looking for a fast-paced job with good tips. Horrid leadership all the way from corporate down to the general managers of the individual stores. Tatte Bethesda suffers from major misogyny from its GM; female employees are constantly chased away, and they are prone to flip-flopping from casually kind to very hostile with all their employees at any moment depending on their personal lives.  They all suffer from close to 0 work life balance, which leads to them taking out their pent-up frustrations on employees. I worked at this location for 2 years, and left when I couldn't be bothered to deal with truly awful leadership anymore.

Management is very unprofessional 
They have a lot of people on the team who discriminate and groups of team managers  who make new team members feel uncomfortable if their duties are not done correctly they don’t correct them they would ask another team member to correct the first team member I have watched management make team members cry and quit their first day and I have witnessed big hr management come in and make other managers cry the company seems like a great company to work for but the management takes advantage of young people and their motivation to thrive with the company and use it against team members and this is from a year working with the company 

The expectation is that you give 150% but pay you 10%. Managers are obsessed with meaningless side work. You are not allowed to talk to coworkers or take any breath during long shifts. They are also understaffed because everyone quits and people often have to work 40 hours a week. The management is an absolute mess, constant turn over. The high level people will often come into the store and chew you out. Lastly they make you take a written test during trainings on things like particular ingredient in a pastry. This job is absolutely not worth the 10$ rate they pay(and you do not get increases unless you are promoted to management position) trust me go somewhere else!

Set up for opening for breakfast making sure that all items are ready for service.  Replenish as needed.  Cook for guests.  Maintain a clean work environment by sanitizing work stations.  

Workplace culture is pro-management. Chefs/Managers salaries are many times tripled that of non-exempt staff but the company does not give performance evaluations which makes it impossible to receive a raise. 

The worst part of the job is standing all day, without ample breaks.  The company allows non-exempt employees one 30 minute break
per shift.
