The Cincinnati Insurance Companies

I have worked for Cincinnati Insurance for the past 7 years. I have been promoted 4 times during this period. There is certainly  opportunity for advancement if you work hard and prove yourself. However, my workload has always been that of my next position i.e. you have to go above and beyond before being promoted. Middle and Upper management can also be out of touch with workloads and expectations of the average employee. I feel as though we're often playing catch-up with staffing, yet management believes we are adequately staffed. Each year, we get asked to do more with less while being paid less than market. Additionally, the HR department is slow to change and can make questionable decisions at times. That being said, the work environment is very welcoming. They do a fantastic job on boarding new employees, making sure they have adequate (sometimes too much) training prior to getting on the desk and most positions will have job coach to help mentor them. There are a significant number of small benefits (zoo tickets, company day at KI, company condo etc) but this doesn't quite make up for the below average compensation. I will close in saying Cincinnati Insurance does their best to help their employees succeed and job security is solid. They just sometimes fall short of expectations due to conservative leadership. Overall, a great company to work for!

If you are lucky to get into a department within the company that doesn't have excessive managers, all with different management styles, you may have a long and secure career. However, promotions and advancements may not occur and you may find yourself in a dead-end job that you have been working for 10+ years - with merit based raises and a merit based annual bonus in March/April; possibly a 3% annual increase in your salary.  If you get in IT, you will find there are managers that manage managers and many will have a different management-style. There are managers for service, for projects, and managers for personal / resource issues -- many are not on the same page. All of these managers role up to a director or department head. Navigating the culture at this company will be the biggest challenge.  It is a VERY conservative company - although they brag that they are open to new ideas and forward-thinking, they are very much stuck in the past and do not embrace change; unless it somehow makes the company money.

This company is unlike any other I have worked for. Everyone is supportive and listens to the input given by each team member. From the newest intern to the most senior developer/administrator/architect. I never once felt like an outsider. Even as a contractor.

More so than at any other company, my skills were greatly appreciated and acknowledged. Both my resource manager and my direct team manager often checked in to see how my experience was, if I needed anything, and if I just had any general feedback on anything. If I ever requested something from someone and wasn't getting a response, a quick IM to my resource manager asking him to do a quick follow up was always greatly appreciated and acted on ASAP.

This company can outlast the worst of economic conditions. It’s very well run, offers good training, and the managers that I have interacted with are supportive and capable. Typical work day for my role is attending several meetings with stake holders,  system  administration, and  testing coordination. Many off hours support and deployments as well. There’s a big push for low code/configurable packages so the coding work I’ve experienced has been mostly “plumbing”. Work-Life balance needs some attention and the benefits are adequate but nothing special. Don’t expect too much bleeding edge technology in the independent insurance space - but that’s industry wide, nothing specific about this company. Sure, there’s the “insuretech” buzz word floating around a lot, but other industries have been leveraging this type of tech for decades now, so nothing truly exciting. Overall, a good, stable job if you can carve out enough family time to meet the demands.

A typical day at work would consist of planning and executing test cases by using programs such as MKS Integrity Client, Quality Center, and eClas. As interns, we got to work on campus at NKU in before, in between, or after classes. I learned a lot about insurance and how an insurance company works. I also developed extra skills in Microsoft Office after having been asked by my boss to create some documents. The management was great. I enjoyed working for all of my bosses, and they were very cooperative and helpful. My co-workers generally were great as well. The hardest part of the job was that it could be tedious and boring at time. Still it was a great opportunity and a great convenience for a college student. The most enjoyable part of the job was being able to work on campus instead of commuting to Fairfield.

This was a great move in my career. Cincinnati Insurance has a wonderful underwriter training and mentorship program. Once through that program and you have worked for a couple of years with them, they like to place people where they will be happy, and help peple to move in that direction in their careers. I was on track to be going to their sales training class to be a field underwriter in 2008. Unfortunately, my husband's career hd moved us before I woudl have finished my field underwriting training and there were no open positions available where I was moving, therefore I had to leave the company. But I left in good standing, and woudl fully recommend other people for a career at Cincinnati Insurance. It's a great company to work for.

The company is very old school and set in their ways. I don't see much room for progression or innovation here. The management is some of the worst I have experienced in my professional career. There is major emphasis on pleasing the agencies at any cost at any time. I have seen grown mature adult underwriters cry at there desks due to the way Cincinnati Insurance lets the agents treat their employees. Micro managing is an understatement for how you will be monitored. You will not be taught how to do your job probably. It is sink or swim, but they don't give you floaties, instead 25 lbs dumbbells. There are literally no resources to help you find what you need to answer the questions agents have. Just one of the worst professional experiences I have ever had. 
 

Multi-line Adjuster- paid one salary for the job of 6 different types of adjuster roles. This is not typical with other carriers, they normally have a separate unit for auto, property, commercial, subrogation and worker's comp claims.

This company made us stay one week at their HQ, they had us meet with each department head and took us out to lunch which was nice, but they should have spent time training us on their claims software system instead.

We worked remotely from home without any training and had to self teach for auto, worker's comp, commercial claims and bodily injury claims. 
Low pay, low raises even if you meet or exceed your goals.

I learned a lot of coding in VBA for Excel, I learned how to query using Access and the Essbase Cube in Excel. The managers were all very open to my ideas and questions. The CEO knows me by name. My co-workers were great to ask for help and included me in lunch and social activities. A typical day at work was spent working on my assigned projects, going to meetings, and meeting with a mentor. The hardest part of the job was knowing when to ask for help and when to know I could figure something out on my own. The most enjoyable part of the job was meeting with other departments and learning about the company.

While the company has a great mission statement and values, and home office management is approachable, the training was not practical nor efficient. The necessity to spend multiple weeks in home office was difficult. Also, the claims management system software is lacking in efficiency.  The claims volume is overwhelming in the region I worked but heard it wasn't as bad in other regions/states. Being a multi-line adjuster along with handling the high volume of pending files can be very stressful for most people. The ability to work from home is a plus for those who work well independently.  This is a very independent job with supervisor interaction as little or as much is needed.  The compensation is low for what is required.
