Overloaded workload no management support days off no one covers your work management is a joke lack of knowing the work they are managing. I didn’t learn anything from working there had to self teach myself and teach as train other staff members. The hardest part of the job is balancing management instruction their process and what actually needs to be done and what it takes to get the job done. The workplace culture was nice but once leadership comes in their is a sense of thick tension and concern of who will be called into the office and for what they say they have an open door policy but they are never available for questions and ask you email them and never get a response or still an open concern or unanswered question which always needs a resolution quickly.  Micromanaging even though leadership says they do not. They have no compassion for personal life outside of the workplace. There is no management support if their employees fall behind leadership doesn’t know how or what the work flow and what their employees do on a day to day. A lot of favoritism amongst employees and managers supervisors. There is a sense of nepotism when hiring for promotions or advancement. They solely focus on what their automated productivity percentages says and not what or how their employees feel about their workload. If you know a lot and can handle a lot they will use that and take advantage of it and the employee. I am very glad to have aeperated with that company and department of patient financial services at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, incredible providers and patient care but for authorizations or billing is a 0 out of 10 I will not be looking to return to that facility u less I am a patient. I will not miss a single day of having been employed with the cancer center at UNM 

I loved the job and my coworkers, but it was clear management did not like me from the start. 4 days prior to the end of my probation they changed my work location so I could be where management is housed, and they brought me into a room with two supervisors and a random nurse from the hospital to terminate me because “ I was not a good fit for the team”. They knew months before that they weren’t going to keep me, but they still chose to use me to fill a spot and then blindside me with termination. They said my clinical skills were perfect and there were no complaints. I thought I was here to do a job and not make friends, but I was apparently wrong. The management clearly knew they were not going to keep me when they brought me into for the first talk and said I had a big personality and I needed to rein it in. I asked for examples and they said they couldn’t give me any and they couldn’t tell me who had made complaints. How am I supposed to fix issues if I don’t know what they are? So during my termination meeting they repeated all complaints and concerns from the first meeting and voiced no other complaints. I was absolutely blind-sided and devastated because I absolutely loved that job. Management has a long way to go there. They give far too much power to the shift supervisors and HR should be involved when there is not a legitimate reason for termination. 

This was a difficult company to get on with as a new nurse with no experience who was trained out of state. A few years later and I had many units expressing interest. 
After several years with the organization in three different units I can say that I truly appreciated my time there. I had so much opportunity for growth and development. Yes my salary increased, but so did my knowledge and abilities as a nurse. I was fortunate to have some wonderful experiences peppered with some not so great ones. I became a supervisor, was given the opportunity to attend a leadership academy, I had wonderful mentors, had many continuing education opportunities, and even got my Master's degree paid for. 
That said, I had several subpar colleagues and I feel that some people stayed due to it being difficult to fire them because of the union. Even before becoming a supervisor it was truly difficult to have a good work-life balance. There is no mandatory overtime for regular staff but if you have good work ethic and a love for your unit it can be easy to get sucked into working more than is honestly safe. 

The cafeteria is very good, the gift shops are well stocked, parking is horrible, the compensation is fair but not fantastic, the teaching hospital aspect is very unique, the providers tend to be amazing. So yes, I would totally recommend this organization. I will most likely return at some point.

I think the other review on UNMH that talks about the abusive patients, management problems, and lack of raises is pretty accurate. Employees like working here because it has fun staff and is challenging. You also learn a lot about health and disease processes. The attending doctors are a joy to work with. The residents are learning how to be respectful to other employees (first job syndrome, I suppose). Though it has not been my experience, I have seen many employees disciplined/fired over minor issues. The policy for taking vacation/leave is very restrictive and often makes it difficult for using time off unless you plan months in advance (why does clinical staff get their time off requests denied or moved around, while non-clinical staff get to take off whatever days they want?). Make no mistakes, this hospital fights tooth and nail every year to prevent pay increases. And when the union eeks out a 2% raise, you're supposed to be thankful that you got 'something.' In general, not a place that rewards long term employment or values committed employees. It is more a place you work because you like the challenge/university environment. It is an 'interesting' place to work with 'interesting' and diverse patients. But truth be told you cannot call this a place that puts employee satisfaction anywhere near the top of their priorities.

I have worked for unmh in the past. I had to jump through hoops to get medical clearance from occupation health. Some of those practices I felt bordered on the lines of legality and maybe infringed on the Americans with disabilites Act. Anyway I was given clearance and made it through orientation. I was at work when i got a called stating my tb gold came back reactive. Horrified I reported to occ health asap. I found all of the employees joking and laughing about the possibility of a lab error due to the high amount of reactive cases from new hires. They sent me for chest xrays which came back negative. They told me they would send my case to the cdc but did not offer to retest, even though they thought it may have been a lab error. I went on with work, a few days later I received a letter threating my employment because of an arrest four years earlier. They could not determine the result of the case. I went to the courthouse and sent them the information stating that the charge was dropped subsequently the case was dismissed. To my horror one week later I was called into a office, with two of my bosses and a human resource rep on the phone asking me for details about a four year old case, misdemeanor charges that had been dropped. I was humiliated. UNMH is using a loop hole, they can't discriminate against hiring you because of an arrest but they can fire you for any reason once you are hired. IE the background check after you are hired.

I am not in a clinical role.  The culture I find amazing.  In an organization with 7,000+ employees, it feels like a friendly small town.  We greet each other in the halls with a smile, hold doors for each other, the shuttle drivers like to make small talk and learn the passengers' names.  Working in management with most of my staff working under a collective bargaining agreement ensures that we are consistent and fair in how we manage.  The union reps will let us know if an employee feels otherwise.   If I can name a downside of working here, it's that the medical coverage is relatively expensive and really only one option to choose from. For medical, dental, and vision for a married couple with kids, it's about $850 out of your monthly check.  I've found that the coverage is also not fantastic.  Pay is fair, I definitely feel upper management cares about our department, and they are accessible and do listen.  I love working somewhere where I feel I make a positive difference in the community, and where those around me work with that same sense of purpose!

Worked for UNMH for more than 30 years.  The first 25 or so years were amazing.  Had a great boss and our team was tight.  Being at the bedside in this hospital was the best education I could've ever asked for.
Unfortunately, despite advancing my practice and education, I was often overlooked and or basically not considered for any advancement and when I attempted to move forward, I was met with great resistance.  Over time, I lost faith and trust in the administrative team who never seemed to be interested in me as an employee.  
I would highly recommend this hospital to anyone starting out their career who has an interest in caring for highly complex patients.  If you want to advance, make friends with people in high places because it does not matter if you have the experience and the skills, if you are not "popular" or disliked by anyone in the C suite, you will likely struggle to get the job you want.

This job is the worst experience I ever had! I would never recommend this job to anyone. I started as full time and wanted to drop down to part time due to school. I had told the managers I was wanting to drop down to part time, but they told me to go in the back where it was quiet away from everyone. They said I was not allowed to drop down hours and had to stay full time since I started at full time. I said fine as long as I don’t work Tuesday and Thursday. They responded okay as an agreement. Unfortunately, nothing was written so they still scheduled me to work those days. I confronted them and they said they didn’t know what I was talking about. 
 
Also, if you ever have hard times with nurses and they mess up on a discrepancy. The pharmacy will not have your back and will tell you to apologize to them. Another thing is, if there’s a discrepancy before your shift, they will tell you to stay late and fix it even though it’s not your name on the discrepancy. 

Horrible place, never again.

Worked for UNMH for several years.  My first few years were great at the first UNMH behavioral health clinic, and took another position at another clinic which was a mistake.  Incompetent employees and management made it unbearable.  Staff had nothing better to do than to gossip about a new person each week and management joined in that fun.  The clinical manager was very hateful to pretty much everyone.  Complained many times to the Director of our department, but nothing was ever done.  Many supervisors came and went and the last one sided with the troublemaker staff.  I had enough and quit a year ago and am so happy I did.  I will say I learned a lot about behavioral health, but mostly from observing the negative behaviors of co-workers and supervisor/clnical management.
