Be very careful when considering a position at Vail Health formally Vail Valley Medical Center.  They use many many travelers and seasonal employees due to high cost of living and the culture of the hospital and area.  When you come in the employees seem kind but if you have experience and they feel threatened you may as well pack your bags. They talk about root cause analysis and Just Culture but if you don’t see things eye to eye the Just Culture and RCA is ignored and you will find yourself in front of an HR representative with your walking papers.  They provide housing for seasonal and travelers which sounds great but the real reason is it is necessary in order meet staffing needs of the hospital secondary to the horrible culture and high cost of living.   As an example of the kind of culture that exist at Vail Health-Never take a vebal order here as it puts you at major risk- if the physician doesn’t like you or the other nurses get word of even a near miss the under current takes hold and your in front of HR.   If the physician  says give a Hydro 5/325 and writes Norco 5/325  or says give a Oxy 5 but writes for Percocet prepare yourself to be in front of HR....You will here from one of your other nurses your working with- “that’s not what he said”.  Within 5 minutes you will suddenly start seeing managers, HR reps, witness private conversations and whispering around corners and their not talking about RCA or Just Culture.   Beware of this place.  You have to consider that Vail is one of the most expensive places to live in the US and world and this population is can be very demanding and the employees who are trying to “fit the mold” may be very taxed financially to live in the area including West Vail therefore translate that misery to others especially in the workplace and around town.  The nurses constantly are stirring drama with one another and there is a tangible under- current of distrust.  Just be careful if you decide to work at Vail Health.  The Valley is very isolated with many other  hospital opportunities in Summit County, Leadville, Salida, Gleanwood springs and even Aspen which do not share the same cut throat culture and offer the same rate of pay or more.

Working at Vail health was my favorite job because of a couple things : they gave you a lot of company swag, there is a lot of room for growth within the company, getting to help people, and they pay well. I thought I had a bright future working there. 
It was also my least favorite job due to things I hope were just within my department. The bullying and work harassment was CRAZY. I had coworkers crying during their shifts due to it. And management did nothing about it.
I would ask my supervisor if I could leave early for doctors appts/medical emergencies. But apparently that was NOT allowed. And when the department manager found out I left work early once (on a day where we had no patients) due to a sudden death in the family, I was reprimanded for it.  
There was just A LOT of drama between doctors/ nurses / patient reps. Very little understanding and sympathy if you were going through your OWN medical issues. 
I wanted so bad to continue my professional journey with Vail Health....but it wasn't a good place for me. 

   In my department the amount of work is very manageable and the staff I worked with are friendly.  If you come here with experience you will be paid fairly.  The self scheduling in my department is great and I am able to get the shifts I need off.  Or I am easily able to switch with a co-worker.  The med-surg department has to work too many weekend shifts in my opinion.  
  Room for learning and advancement is limited because of the size of the hospital and ingrained in the clinical culture is that you are expected to move to a different area, get city experience and come back.  This is just not feasible for local employees that are unwilling to separate or uproot their families.  
    I did not utilize the health benefits so can not speak to them but the other perks are tuition assistance, loan payback (awesome!),  child care asssistance, etc...

BE VERY CAREFUL.......worked there last year, they fired 3 top managers in OR services and ICU. Hired 2 new people from Denver that are absolutely the worst managers I've seen in 20+ years. Out of 14 RNs in PACU, 11 left within the first yr with new .manager. Micro-managing @ it's absolute worst! MDs and the other staff are great but hospital environment is wicked. Let go their entire anesthesia MDs that were there for yrs and hired all new, and then fired some of them within months of relocating to Vail.WATCH YOUR BACK!!!! Manager gave entire PACU horrible evals that went on permanent work record and litrally destroyed careers. Administration totally backs this manager, despite numerous complaints to HR. Try Frisco or Aspen, seriously!! Most of staff and MDs are great but all are afraid for their jobs. So sad, it should be the perfect job, too bad!

I had a phone interview for a professional position, after I was told I would be speaking with another person to continue the process and that would be set up soon.  I was told they did not have any qualified candidates and I had everything they were looking for.  The next thing I receive an email stating they filled the position and the email was from someone I never spoke with.  I thought this might be in error because this happened to me once before and I did eventually get that position where they had sent a "sorry" email by mistake.  I was told that the revenue cycle department hired someone this morning.   
They also said if i had any questions to call them but couldn't even spell questions correctly.   It was a sloppy poor etiquette process and that gets around in the Hospital community.  You have to treat people with respect.
I emailed the CEO and appropriate departments.  

Management picks favorites, that work the same shift as management.  These employees have access to support staff and management that other shift workers do not.  Little or no effort is made to update and train staff that doesn't work same shift as management.  In addition the preferred shift have a large work group vs. a solo or 2 person group for other shifts.  If any minor issues arise from this comical, planned failure setup, perceived or conjured errors for the most trivial items are aired out in group emails as major errors, in a manner that publicly portrays employees as bungling fools, in stark contrast with the indispensable genius of the preferred.  This allows for the favored group to feel very good about themselves, and they feed on this in a parasitic, unhealthy and self aggrandizing manner.  Pucker up if you decide to work here.

Vail Health is very focused on themselves and no their employees.  Pay is less than one would expect for the level of education necessary to work in the medical field and additional certifications received to improve patient care and satisfaction.  

Executive leadership is wildly out of touch with their employee base.  Consistently says that the employee is the most important part of the organization, but routinely does not take action to show the employee that they are valued or important.  Process and procedures are out of date and often times hinder employees ability to get their work done in a timely manner.  

Very little chance and opportunity for professional growth both in terms financial compensation and career growth.  Consistently promote incompetent people that have failed at pervious tasks.  

Vail Health administrators are the Mob. 

This is a non-profit organization that had an excess of $100 million in profits last year. It’s the dark side of Capitalism. Greed begets greed. Procedures are double what you would pay in neighboring Denver. 

It’s corrupt. Administrators get kick backs and frequently ignore safety concerns. Bullying and intimidation are commonplace in some departments. If you voice concerns and resign there will he attempts to blackball you from future employment elsewhere.

Staff are generally very pleasant at face value. The staff that excel here are ones who are there for the outdoor draw and don’t ask questions. 

Be incredibly careful if you accept a position here. This is a place for sheep. If you’re a wolf, seek employment elsewhere.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Immediate supervisor was great. Very accommodating.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The hospital HAS NO BASIC appreciation of the line type employee. Doctors feel they are the gift to humanity and most will not tolerate input from staff and patients. A very sad state of affairs at an institution that operates as a “good ole boy” club.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
If it was not for the immediate supervisor, it sucks. The department VP lacks the TRUE ability to manage and address retention issues with in the department.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
One word…. Pure CHAOS when the immediate supervisor was not there!

For the most part I enjoy working at Vail Health. No ski pass offered to employees is a real bummer. Their pay scale seems to be quite a bit lacking compared to nearby mountain hospitals. They should do annual market adjustments, as the cost of living here increases more quickly than other places. I can’t afford to buy a home with my current hourly rate. Very difficult to find places to rent—this is why it’s difficult to find people who can stick around longer than a year or two.  They do offer student loan reimbursement, which is a nice perk. But no designated employee housing (there is some housing that is offered up to employees, but it’s very scarce and they tax you on it he market rate).
