At the beginning there's a lot to learn if you haven't worked in healthcare/ophthalmology before. Questions are encouraged and I felt well prepared by training process. Variety of doctors and locations means that your schedule, coworkers, and daily tasks could be very different based on your assignment. Usually a quick and steady working pace with predictable hours. When doctors travel to other locations, expect longer days (travel stipend is nice though). No after-hours work expected- do your job and go home. Employees work in teams that have their own mini-cultures. Working with a wide variety of coworkers and patients, you really see it all. If you're relatively nice, you get along with most others. Management was communicative, responsive to things I brought up, and as flexible with schedule as able. I liked working with the doctors and recording medical info, I learned new things every day and felt like a useful part of the process! Overall, a great place to work and good people to work with. If there were more opportunities for development I might have stayed for a long time.

Interacting w/ the public in a healthcare setting can be rewarding, but also challenging at times. Knowing that you have a good support system from your co-workers, physicians, management & HR is crucial and definitely present in this position. This support helps me feel empowered to make the best decision in a situation not only for the patient, but for the company as well without fear of being reprimanded. I feel like my opinions and suggestions are heard and welcomed. The compensation, benefits & employee recognition are great & fair. Sometimes communication can be difficult, but that is common with any larger company. I wish we did more community volunteering or sponsoring of local events/ sporting events to make our involvement in the company more prevalent, but I have heard that is something they are working to improve. Overall, I love my position & helping make a difference in people's lives otherwise I wouldn't have been employed here for the last 10+ years. 

You will be thrown all over the place. No consistency. The communication inside the company and outwardly to the patients is horrendous. The managers do not keep their employees informed of important changes. The managers will tell you things last minute and get mad at you for not knowing the information (that only they could tell you) earlier. This office has had the most doctor schedule changes I have ever seen in all my years of working in the medical field. Whether you are a receptionist or a technician - you will be left to deliver the bad news to patients only to be screamed and cursed out by upset patients. You're expected to accept the chaos and not dare put your two sense in if you see an opportunity for change. At the end of the day this company's employees are unhappy and the patients are the ones who suffer the most. Pathetic.

Not enough staff at any location yet more doctors and more locations are being added. New hires are not lasting because the chaos of taking on new patients without enough staff. It should be quality over quantity and it seems like that is not the case with Vistar anymore. Employees that have been there for Years have left or thinking about leaving. Yes Patient care is top priority but employees are not robots and should not be treated as such. The biggest eye doctor around paying minimum wage does not make sense. Now all that aside if you are wanting to help people and change lives, this is the company you need to be with. There are plenty opportunities for change and growth inside of Vistar, once they sort out the mess it is right now. 

The pay is low. Quick and easy interview process. They will hire you even if you don’t have prior experience, then question you for it later if you don’t catch on quick enough. They say they give you time to learn at your own pace because of all there is to know, but then rush you learn it and put you out there by yourself. They switch you around to different locations, different Drs., different everything and expect you to adapt quickly. The people who work there don’t even want to be there and a handful of them expressed they want to quit. The trainers were nice and helpful but they had a load to handle and pretty much kept talking about how they can’t keep anybody. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
It only takes one or two horrible people to ruin a workplace. Management is also lacking. No consequences for bad behavior. Too much gossip and drama. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The drama and gossip and poor management. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Toxic and hostile. Drama, gossip, very poor management. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Sitting in a cubicle with no window trying to concentrate and do work in a room with three other people. Hard to concentrate or handle phone calls due to noise and distractions.

My job at Vistar included responsibilities such as verifying insurance, taking patient payments, checking patients in and out, making and receiving phone calls, etc. The hardest part of the job was dealing with elderly patients. During my time there, I learned a lot about the NextGen software.The management was very professional and easy to talk to. My favorite part of the job was being able to learn about the different parts of the eye, different diseases of the eye, etc.

Vistar is a excellent company to work for.  The doctors care about their employees.  The company strives to make a good work environment and looks to the employees for their input on things that could be changed or improved upon.  
Vistar provides advancement opportunities for employees and provides continuing education. 
Management is easy to approach and listen to concerns.  They encourage employee input on solutions to concerns.



You better have your running shoes on and be prepared to be exhausted at the end of the day. Many clinics here see 50+ patients EVERYDAY. Pay does not meet the demand of the job. Communication from the top down is also a huge problem. Higher ups are completely disconnected from the clinics and refuse to take the time to walk through and see what actually goes on. I absolutely what I do but it’s hard to love doing it here.
