What is the best part of working at the company?
Getting paid on time and some company benefits.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Not being trained properly by management.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very cliqueish, high levels of productivity expected, lack of work/life balance, constant pressure, dealing with extreme levels of patient abuse in nursing homes.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Investigating several cases of elder patient abuse in skilled nursing facilities in a specific geographic area. Entering notes on a daily basis, constant driving with no down time.

The work is important given the lack of oversight of longterm care facilities. The training was generally one on one with the office program Director who was the staff supervisor. Your individual work began after a brief period of shadowing. Each ombudsman had facility assignments which varied from 10 to a few hundred residents per facility. 

The line staff were supportive of one another but the Director was largely unavailable due to other assignments. Case review was irregular if they occurred at all. SOGIE was not respected.

Great coworkers, who are very supportive and friendly, some transparency from upper management. Clients can be a pleasure to work with. The work can be challenging, but also rewarding. Employers are working from offices during COVID-19, which is unnecessary risk, since all work can be done from home (phone and email). Upper management fails to address simple issues, such as easy access into office.  Getting a raise can take several months ( this seems to be a shared experience among colleagues). Yearly review promised, but not carried through. 

Enjoyed the challenging yet rewarding field-based direct service work with older adult clients and appreciated the room for creativity in the role — I had the freedom to think of outside the box ways to best help clients, tailoring services to their abilities and preferences. Hard to move up ranks unless you’re incredibly lucky timing-wise and have clinical license. Without the ability to move up ranks, salary is limited. 

Visiting and speaking with residents in long-term care facilities, and advocating on their behalf is great. It's extremely special to connect with residents who have very few or no one to visit them, as it gives them comfort.

I have worked at Wise & Healthy Aging for one year and for most of that time I was not paid. The experience has been quite rewarding since I have seen how much the seniors engage in the activity and their expressions change during the course of the session. I lead them in singing, clapping and laughter exercises as part of the Laughter Yoga class. I teach for one hour, twice a month.

This is an excellent position to make an immediate, daily impact on  vulnerable seniors’ lives. Its busy and challenging, but if you can do this job, you can do any job in the social services field. 

The skills you will learn/master from this experience are invaluable and I think this job was the most impactful of my lengthy career. 

The agency has a great mission. The team is diverse and management makes an effort to support diversity and inclusion. 

The position requires independent work but the team is supportive and encouraging. There are opportunities to share ideas and contribute to solutions. 

I adored working with Seniors and helping them become involved  in activities and projects that directly contributed to their overall health and well being. The workload was often a bit unmanageable, but the happiness we gave to our clients made it worthwhile.

It's very meaningful work helping residents address issues at LTC facilities. It was a great way to develop advocacy/meditation skills for entry social workers.
