Full Job Description

Job Overview

The Director of Marketing and Communication is responsible for developing, overseeing and executing all marketing and communications of Harford Family House. The incumbent will be responsible for designing, developing and distributing consistent themes, messaging and branding throughout all communications touch points, with the goal of supporting fundraising appeals and increasing awareness of the issue of homelessness and the role HFH plays in addressing the need in Harford County. This position is a member of the expanded leadership team and will participate in monthly meetings. This position is also expected to support the overall operation of Harford Family House when needed. Certain tasks may be asked that do not fall into the essential functions of this job.

Essential Functions

1. Manage Marketing and Communications Projects and Strategies

a. Create and manage a comprehensive Marketing and Communications strategy to ensure a cohesive HFH brand and voice

b. In collaboration with departmental leadership, develop, prioritize and execute specific marketing and communication plans that serve the goals and function of each area of the organization

c. Develop and manage cohesive organizational marketing and communications calendar to direct the flow and timing of print and digital media vehicles, including emails, video, social media, annual impact report, print collateral, signage, graphics and more

d. Oversee email communication strategy, ensure high quality email communications content, manage communications calendar and email list development

e. Develop strategy and equitable process to gather client stories. Directly connect with clients on a frequent basis to create strength-based stories. Facilitate the circulation of client success stories across multiple platforms in a way that respectfully highlights the client and is sensitive in how we portray their identities

2. Manage Media and Press Relations

a. Prepare media kits, organize press conferences, write press releases and write speeches for the leadership team as needed

b. Build relationships with media and press outlets, pitch stories to the media and support crisis or emergency communications situations

3. Manage HFH Online Presence

a. Manage HFH Website- make content and format updates through WordPress, enforce conventions and standards. Manage website backend developer contract and serve as website administrator

b. Design and orchestrate a lively social media presence strategy (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) to increase public awareness, donor acquisition and stewardship.

d. Steward HFH online community- orchestrating thoughtful responses to feedback and monitoring comments on platforms to ensure alignment with organizational values

e. Measure and track campaign effectiveness and digital properties

4. Maintain HFH Brand Identity

a. Champion the HFH brand, linguistic and visual identity; equip staff, board and volunteers to use the brand according to branding guidelines

b. Uphold and update agency core messaging, language and writing style standards across print and online program and development materials

c. Collaborate with Development and Program staff to write and edit as needed, all public-facing content

d. Develop, design and produce marketing collateral for the organization (for both fundraising and programmatic goals) and ensure consistency across the organization

e. Identify key audiences and messages, understand all existing and new programs and create consistent messaging in alignment with brand strategy

f. Monitor competitors, be aware of changes in the homelessness services landscape and news, understand challenges faced by our client demographic

5. Manage department budget and deliver on budget related goals and deliverables

Technical/Job Competencies

1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to interact professionally and comfortably with individuals at all levels

2. Strong ability to present professionally and accurately with excellent proof reading

3. Excellent at planning, prioritizing and implementation; problem solves at a highly developed level

4. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously while managing deadlines

5. Knowledge of fundamentals of marketing, communications and public relations

6. Proficiency in digital content development including photography and video production

7. Proficiency with WordPress and ability to manage website content updates

8. Proficiency with graphic design principles and application including Canva and the Adobe Creative Suite

9. Familiarity with business applications of social media platforms and social scheduling tools

Physical Demands
This is a mostly sedentary position, sitting for long periods of time. Standard office working conditions. Bending, stooping and reaching may be needed for office files and cabinets. Ability to lift up to 25lbs of office and event supplies. Finger dexterity needed for computer data entry.

Travel/Schedule

This Job may occasionally travel regionally using a personal vehicle. Standard daytime work schedule Monday to Friday. Some weekends and evenings required for events.

Required Education and Experience

1. 5-7 years of relevant professional experience in communications and/or marketing; preferably in a nonprofit organization

2. Bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as marketing, digital media, journalism, public relations or communications

Pay: $70,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
