Job Description
The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is seeking an experienced Professional Mechanical Engineer to join Facilities Services.
Under the general direction and guidance of the Assistant Director of Engineering, the Professional Mechanical Engineer independently performs mechanical engineering design, specification reviews, and submittal reviews for large- and small-scale new construction and retrofit projects.
This position is also responsible for in-house mechanical and plumbing design for renovation and renewal projects managed by Facilities Services. The Mechanical Engineer provides engineering consultation and troubleshooting support for facilities operations and plays a key role in mechanical and plumbing system master planning.
Key responsibilities include:
- Perform mechanical engineering design for new construction, renovation, renewal, and infrastructure projects.
- Independently review engineering designs, specifications, and submittals for projects of varying size and complexity.
- Provide in-house mechanical and plumbing design for renovation and renewal projects.
- Provide mechanical engineering consulting and troubleshooting support to facilities operations.
- Participate in and supervise mechanical and plumbing system master planning.
- Lead efforts to optimize the operational efficiency of HVACR, central plant, and mechanical distribution systems.
- Consult and collaborate with energy, controls, and commissioning teams.
- Participate in developing and updating campus engineering design guidelines and standards.
- Consult with other University departments as needed.
- Develop project cost estimates.
- Prepare as-built documentation, descriptive project summaries, and scopes of work for infrastructure, renewal, and deferred maintenance projects.
- Apply sound engineering judgment when selecting methods and techniques to develop effective solutions.
- Support safe, sustainable, efficient, and reliable campus facilities.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and/or equivalent experience or training.
- Minimum of 5+ years of related experience.
- 5 years of experience in mechanical design for research laboratories, vivariums, higher education facilities, or similar institutions.
- 1–3 years of experience in facilities operations and/or support activities.
- Experience and knowledge of HVACR systems for new construction and renovations involving research laboratories, vivariums, and different levels of biosafety laboratories.
- Proficiency in computerized and manual HVAC analysis, including AutoCAD MEP.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Knowledge of plumbing, central plants, mechanical distribution systems, and DDC controls.
- Knowledge of applicable building codes and energy standards.
- Thorough knowledge and ability to independently perform the full range of professional engineering work.
- Strong understanding of engineering principles, practices, and procedures.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to deliver high-quality design and construction projects on schedule.
- Demonstrated organizational and decision-making abilities with the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Effective written, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively, identify challenges and barriers, and recommend appropriate solutions.
- Ability to lead and influence others.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA and Environmental Health and Safety Management regulations as they relate to project design and execution.
- Knowledge of sustainable development practices.
- Professional attitude within the work environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- BIM/Revit experience.
- LEED AP credential.
- Experience in construction project management and project cost estimation.
- OSHPD experience.
- Experience with renewable energy applications.
- Demonstrated ability to simultaneously coordinate a large number of projects varying in size, type, and complexity.
- Previous work experience in a university or similar institutional environment.
