Commercial Real Estate Credit Underwriter
Job Type: Full-Time
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Location: Onsite – Candidate will be required to work from the Claremont, CA office

Job Description: This position is responsible for independently evaluating and underwriting commercial real estate loan requests, analyzing borrower and property performance, assessing credit risk, and developing credit recommendations for management and Loan Committee consideration. The Commercial Real Estate Credit Underwriter serves as a key contributor to the Bank’s credit decision-making process and exercises significant discretion and independent judgment in evaluating creditworthiness, identifying risks, recommending loan structures, and supporting sound lending decisions. This position partners closely with loan officers, credit administration, and executive management to maintain a high-quality commercial real estate loan portfolio.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Commercial Real Estate Underwriting

Independently analyze commercial real estate loan requests and modifications.
Evaluate multifamily, mixed-use, retail, office, industrial, and investor-owned residential real estate properties.
Analyze borrower and guarantor financial statements, tax returns, global cash flow, liquidity, and contingent liabilities.
Review operating statements, rent rolls, property cash flow, market data, and appraisal reports.
Assess debt service coverage, loan-to-value ratios, guarantor strength, and overall repayment capacity.
Identify strengths, weaknesses, risks, and mitigating factors associated with proposed credit facilities.
Exercise independent judgment in evaluating overall creditworthiness and risk.

Credit Structure and Risk Assessment

Develop recommendations regarding loan structure, amortization, covenants, guarantor requirements, reserves, and other risk mitigation strategies.
Recommend risk ratings consistent with Bank policy and regulatory guidance.
Identify policy exceptions and provide supporting analysis and recommendations.
Review environmental reports, title reports, entity structures, and other due diligence materials.
Evaluate collateral adequacy and marketability.

Credit Memorandums and Loan Committee Support

Prepare comprehensive credit memorandums and underwriting presentations.
Clearly communicate borrower risk profiles, property performance, and approval recommendations.
Present credit analyses and recommendations to management and Loan Committee when appropriate.
Respond to questions from management and Loan Committee regarding underwriting conclusions and recommendations.

Portfolio Monitoring and Asset Quality

Perform annual reviews and periodic portfolio monitoring.
Analyze borrower performance and changes in property cash flow.
Monitor covenant compliance and reporting requirements.
Identify emerging credit concerns and recommend appropriate action plans.
Assist in risk rating reviews and criticized asset monitoring.

Collaboration and Leadership

Partner with Loan Officers to evaluate lending opportunities and structure transactions.
Assist in mentoring junior analysts and supporting departmental training initiatives.
Contribute to process improvements and credit administration best practices.
Maintain knowledge of commercial real estate markets, industry trends, and regulatory expectations.

Qualifications:

Experience:

Minimum five years of commercial real estate underwriting, credit analysis, or portfolio management experience.
Strong experience underwriting income-producing commercial real estate.
Demonstrated ability to independently evaluate credit risk and formulate underwriting recommendations.

Strong understanding of:

Commercial real estate lending
Multifamily lending
Global cash flow analysis
Financial statement analysis
Tax return analysis
Property cash flow analysis
Commercial loan structures

Skills and Abilities:

Possess a strong work ethic, organizational skills, communication, and analytical skills.
Advanced proficiency with MS Office Excel, Word, SharePoint, Docusign, Teams, Outlook, and spreading tools.
Capacity to be flexible, follow directions, work within a team environment, meet deadlines, and effectively prioritize work commitments.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Real Estate, or related field.
