Full Job Description

Zebra House Coffee is looking for a baker who is also interested in working as a barista, with a flexible schedule to fit in with other baking team members. You will bake 2-3 shifts per week and barista 2-3 shifts per week. Weekend and early morning availability is required. Shifts run 5:30am-midday (11-1pm end time typically).

Baker/Barista will start at $17.00 per hour, and once training is completed (~2 weeks) they will join the tip pool (averages $4-6 per hour). Baker & Barista role will have an increase to pay once can suitable perform both roles (2-3 months), up to $18-19 per hour base depending on ability to support bar, kitchen & bakery effectively.

Barista's are required to make all coffee/non-coffee drinks (21+ can serve beer/wine), and support chores throughout their shift as well. Baristas work register, package deliveries, and bring orders to customers. All team members, including bakers/baristas share in keeping the restaurant clean and maintaining equipment. Everyone shares equally in the tip pool.

About Zebra House Coffee:
We are a family-owned cafe, coffee shop, & bakery with a team that is passionate about the high-quality drinks, baked goods, breakfast & lunch we serve up to the locals of San Clemente since 2011. Our current hours are 6-5pm every day except Christmas.

About the position:
A baker at Zebra House is responsible for carrying on the tradition of our consistently awesome muffins, and other bakery items that we’ve become famous for in San Clemente. We specialize in gluten-free and vegan muffins, along with a full lineup of classics muffins. We also bake scones, cookies, macaroons, berry bars, brownies and cake pops. Consistency in portions and optics of the baked goods EVERY TIME is fundamental.

Our bakers begin their shift at 5:30am and work until midday, until the bakery case is stacked sufficiently for the afternoon and the start of the next morning. Occasionally bakers take on afternoon shifts or stay longer to assist with event/catering orders. Bakers also assist the team with stocking the grab & go, including some of our custom items like cold food bars and overnight oats. Bakers will also support new initiatives for homemade syrups, beverage bar and mocktail ingredients.

Bakers make homemade whipped cream and other sauces as well – since all of our sauces and dressings in our restaurant are made from scratch. Bakers also help baristas & cooks with wiping tables, dishes and stocking during rush hours and in between batches of baked goods. Bakers are of course required to keep their station neat each day, communicate supply needs to the manger in time for weekly orders, and clean up well before leaving the shop.

Even though the baker position is mostly back-of-house, a passion for making people smile is fundamental at Zebra House. Must have a cheerful personality, with a cooperative attitude and willingness to work well with the rest of the Zebra House crew - especially under pressure. No egos please!!

Skills required (post-training, as needed):

You can properly and consistently make all of our baked goods and drinks in accordance with Zebra House recipes
You are profitability conscious and are aware of ingredient costs and conscientious to minimize waste
You can safely and properly operate and clean our equipment including a double-stacked baking oven, blenders, espresso machines, grinders, etc.
You are conscientious of food and drink display cases, ensuring proper stocking of all and appealing display of baked & packaged goods
You are able to work with your friends/colleagues without too much silliness. We are one big family but socializing can derail operations, particularly during rush in the mornings.
You follow proper food safety requirements (you will be required to have your California Food Handlers Cert on your first day)
You understand that Zebra House’ recipes must stay at Zebra House and it is very important not to share “our secret sauce”

Schedules are created weekly or bi-monthly. We are a small business and require that all employees share duties and are willing to learn new skills and perform other duties as requested by the on-shift leads/managers.
