Full Job Description

ASUA continues to grow and we are expanding our clinical team again! Are you a Speech and Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA) who is interested in working in a collaborative special education school environment? If so, we encourage you to apply at ASUA!

Position: Speech and Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA)

Reports to: Speech and Language Pathologists/Director of Clinical Programming

Status: Full Time

Job Summary: To support clinical services provided by Speech and Language Pathologists (SLP) to students with Autism. Must demonstrate strong skills in partnering with families. Under the supervision of a certified and licensed SLP, the SLPA may execute specific components of a speech and language program as specified in treatment plans developed by the SLP. Goals and objectives listed on the treatment plan and implemented by the SLPA are only those within their scope of responsibilities and are the tasks the SLP has determined the SLPA has the training and skill to perform.

Qualifications:

Bachelor Degree in Communication Disorders/ Speech and Language Pathology which includes academic coursework, fieldwork, and on-the-job training

Current (dated within a year) Act 34, 114, and 151 clearances

Current SLPA Approval letter from the State Board of Examiners in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology upon hire.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

A strong understanding and demonstrated commitment to ASUA’s philosophy of a collaborative approach to academic, behavioral, and clinical programming rooted in supportive and caring delivery of services and trauma-informed care.
Self-identify as SLPAs to families, students, staff, and others. This may be done verbally, in writing, and/or with titles on name badges.
Assist the SLP with speech, language, and hearing screenings without clinical interpretation.
Assist the SLP during assessment of students, patients, and clients exclusive of administration and/or interpretation.
Follow documented treatment plans and execute protocols developed by the supervising SLP.
Document student performance (e.g., tallying data for the SLP to use; preparing charts, records, and graphs) and report this information to the supervising SLP.
Program and provide instruction in the use of augmentative and alternative communication devices.
Assist with clerical duties, such as preparing materials and scheduling activities, as directed by the SLP.
Perform checks and maintenance of equipment.
Assist with departmental operations (scheduling, recordkeeping, safety/maintenance of supplies and equipment)
Comply with state standards, school policies, and ASHA guidelines in the processes of referral, screening, and placement.
Maintain communication with the building faculty regarding the role of the SLPA, as well as to provide support and consultation.
Maintain a physical environment conducive to learning.
Stay abreast of and implement new instructional strategies.
Attend workshops and in-service training to obtain up-to-date information in the area of speech and language and maintain required certifications and licensure.
Travel between campuses as needed and directed.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

To read and abide by the Employee Handbook including updates and changes.
To attend all mandatory meetings, including those that fall outside of regularly scheduled school hours and as described in the Employee Handbook.
This job description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by this employee. The SLPA will be required to follow any other instructions and to perform any other related duties as assigned by the Head of School, Director of Academic Programming, Director of Clinical Programming, Director of Behavioral Programming, and other appropriate administrators.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, squatting, climbing stairs, kneeling, and moving light furniture may be required. Adequate vision and hearing ability for monitoring children’s verbal and non-verbal responses. Ability to provide a quality speech/language model for students and staff.

Equipment/Material Handled:

The SLPA shall be assigned a variety of materials which are to be appropriately stored and accounted for. All media resources and borrowed material are to be judiciously used, and are to be maintained in a reasonably unsoiled and non-damaged fashion. Must know how to properly operate or be willing to learn to operate all multimedia equipment including current technology.

Work Environment:

As necessary, the SLPA shall be assigned office and/or therapy space, amenable to individual, and small group consultations. When working with individual students or groups of students (or staff) a reasonably clean and distraction-free area is to be maintained in accordance with the building supervisor. It shall be the duty of the SLPA to maintain a travel schedule from one location to another, and to provide timely notices when published schedules cannot be maintained. Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. Job responsibilities include both inside and outside assignments. Must be able to work under stressful conditions.
