The Acute Care Technician – Emergency Department Registration position is an entry-level clinical support role for individuals with a current EMT-Basic certification and limited or no prior hospital experience. This position provides an opportunity to gain experience in a Critical Access Hospital environment while developing the skills necessary to support patients and clinical staff in the Acute Care Unit (ACU), Swing Bed, and Emergency Department.
During the first six months of employment, the employee will primarily work in Emergency Department Registration, completing patient registration and other Patient Access responsibilities. When registration duties and patient volumes allow, the employee may assist the ACU/Swing Bed team with approved non-clinical or entry-level support duties within their current training and demonstrated competency.
Following successful completion of the first six months, the employee may begin structured training and competency validation to transition into the full Acute Care Technician role on the ACU/Swing Bed unit.
The employee must demonstrate professionalism, dependability, confidentiality, strong customer service, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn in a rural hospital environment.
Primary Responsibilities – First Six Months
Emergency Department Registration
-
Serve as the primary registration support for Emergency Department patients during assigned shifts.

Greet patients, family members, EMS personnel, and other visitors in a professional and compassionate manner.

Accurately register Emergency Department patients in the hospital's electronic registration system.
-
Collect and verify patient demographic information, including name, date of birth, address, telephone number, emergency contact, and other required information.
-
Obtain and verify insurance and payer information when appropriate.
-
Register patients arriving by ambulance and ensure required demographic and registration information is entered accurately and in a timely manner.
-
Work collaboratively with EMS and Emergency Department clinical staff to ensure registration activities do not interfere with or delay emergency patient care.
-
Complete required registration documents, acknowledgments, signatures, and other Patient Access documentation.
-
Update existing patient records when demographic or insurance information has changed.
-
Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and organizational privacy requirements.

Assist with additional registration, Patient Access, telephone, or clerical duties as assigned.
-
Communicate registration concerns or incomplete information to the appropriate staff member.
-
Maintain an organized and professional registration/work area.
ACU/Swing Bed Support During First Six Months
When Emergency Department registration responsibilities are completed and patient volume allows, the employee may assist the ACU/Swing Bed team with duties appropriate to their current level of training and demonstrated competency.
Responsibilities may include:

Answering call lights and communicating patient needs to nursing staff.

Assisting with patient comfort and non-clinical needs.
-
Stocking and organizing patient care areas and supplies.
-
Assisting with room preparation and turnover.
-
Transporting patients, supplies, specimens, or equipment as directed.
-
Assisting nursing staff with approved tasks that are within the employee's EMT-B scope, organizational policy, and demonstrated competencies.

Supporting the ACU/Swing Bed team with other duties as assigned.
The employee will not independently perform Acute Care Technician duties until appropriate training, competency validation, and authorization have been completed.
Acute Care Technician Training – After Six Months
Following successful completion of the first six months of employment and demonstration of satisfactory performance, attendance, professionalism, and dependability, the employee may begin training for the Acute Care Technician role.
Training may include:

Orientation to ACU and Swing Bed workflows and standards.

Basic patient care and activities of daily living.
-
Obtaining and documenting vital signs.
-
Measuring and documenting intake and output.
-
Assisting patients with mobility, transfers, positioning, and ambulation.
-
Assisting with bathing, toileting, grooming, feeding, and other activities of daily living.
-
Patient safety and fall prevention.
-
Infection prevention and isolation procedures.
-
Specimen collection as permitted by policy and competency.
-
Point-of-care testing when appropriately trained and competency validated.
-
Basic clinical documentation.
-
Patient transport.
-
Equipment and supply management.
-
Swing Bed patient activities and supportive care.
-
Other Acute Care Technician competencies established by the organization.
Completion of six months of employment does not automatically authorize the employee to perform all responsibilities of the Acute Care Technician. Duties may be performed only after required training and competency validation have been successfully completed.
Position Expectations
The Acute Care Technician – Emergency Department Registration employee is expected to develop skills in two key areas: Emergency Department registration and direct patient care support.
During the first six months, successful performance will be demonstrated through accurate and timely patient registration, strong customer service, dependability, appropriate communication, protection of patient confidentiality, and effective teamwork.
After six months, the employee's performance will be reviewed to determine readiness to begin Acute Care Technician training. Once training and required competencies are successfully completed, the employee may assume increased responsibilities within the ACU/Swing Bed unit while continuing to assist with Emergency Department registration or other operational needs when required.
