About Floor Authority
Floor Authority is a flooring company serving production builders, custom builders, commercial clients, and multi-family developers across South Carolina and North Carolina, plus showroom retail. We operate across multiple markets in the Carolinas with our own field teams, warehouses, and showrooms — handling the full scope from estimating and material sourcing to installation and warranty.
We build our own technology (FloorCore, our internal ERP) to run the business, and we're investing in the people, processes, and structure to support the next stage of growth. If you want to be part of a company that's building something — not just maintaining it — this is the place.
Role Purpose
The Repair & Warranty Technician is a skilled tile specialist who owns small-scope tile and grout repairs, warranty callbacks, and builder punch work for the market they serve. The role exists to keep punch and warranty work inside the company where it matters most: when the issue is too small for a full crew, when the timeline is too tight to wait, or when the quality bar requires a company-employed craftsman standing behind the work.
The role is tile-led but multi-product — comfortable executing repairs across LVP, engineered and solid hardwood, laminate, sheet vinyl, and carpet seams as they arise on punch lists. The role is also Schluter Kerdi-certified (or trainable to certification), able to step into shower waterproofing prep when installer schedules slip and a builder deadline can't move. This is the person who makes the punch list disappear and the warranty queue stay short.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Tile & Grout Repair
- Execute small-scope tile repairs across all product categories Floor Authority carries — porcelain, ceramic, and natural stone — matching existing layouts, grout joints, and finishes so repairs are invisible.
- Perform grout repair and color-matched re-grouting on existing installations, including caulk replacement at change-of-plane joints.
- Diagnose tile failures in the field (hollow tiles, lippage, cracked tiles, grout cracking, efflorescence) and recommend the right corrective approach — repair-in-place vs. rip-and-replace vs. escalate.
- Handle small-format and large-format tile equally well, including proper back-buttering, leveling system use, and uncoupling membrane installation where called for.
Kerdi Shower Waterproofing & Shower Prep
- Execute full Schluter Kerdi waterproofing systems — Kerdi membrane, Kerdi-Band seams, Kerdi-Drain, pre-sloped Kerdi-Shower-Tray or mud bed, and curb wrap — to manufacturer specification.
- Step in for installer crews when schedules slip — completing shower waterproofing prep so the install crew can hit tile day on schedule and protect builder deadlines.
- Inspect installer-completed waterproofing prior to tile when called in for QC support, and document any deviations from spec.
Punch Work & Warranty Callbacks
- Own the punch list for assigned jobs — clear builder punch items efficiently and to spec so Field Managers and Market Managers don't get pulled off active installs to chase small items.
- Respond to warranty callbacks across product categories — tile, LVP, hardwood, laminate, carpet — executing repairs that hold up and that the customer is satisfied with.
- Document each warranty visit in FloorCore: photos before and after, root cause, corrective action, materials used, and time on site.
- Triage warranty calls in the field — distinguish manufacturing defects from installation issues from homeowner-caused damage, and route each appropriately.
Multi-Product Repair Competency
- Execute small-scope repairs across LVP/LVT (plank replacement, seam repair), engineered and solid hardwood (board replacement, finish touch-up), laminate (plank swap), sheet vinyl (seam and patch work), and carpet (seam repair, patching).
- Identify the limits of in-house repair scope — when a callback is beyond what one technician can handle and a full crew needs to be dispatched.
Field Coordination & Documentation
- Coordinate daily with the Market Manager, Field Manager, and Project Coordinators on punch and warranty queue prioritization for the market.
- Maintain accurate time, mileage, and materials tracking in FloorCore for each visit so warranty cost data is reliable.
- Surface recurring failure patterns to the Market Manager and VP of Operations — same installer, same product, same builder, same failure mode — so the company can act on root cause rather than treat symptoms.
- Maintain the company-provided vehicle, tools, and consumable inventory in working order; flag low stock before it becomes a problem.
Travel & Work Schedule
Market-based field role. Daily travel between job sites within the assigned market is the norm; occasional travel to adjacent markets to backfill coverage gaps.
Full-time, Monday–Friday, with occasional Saturday work when builder closing deadlines require it.
Company-provided service vehicle and gas card.
Desired Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional tile installation experience with a strong portfolio of finished work. Demonstrated ability to repair tile in a way that's invisible to the customer.
- Schluter-Systems trained — Kerdi-certified preferred. Candidates without current certification but with demonstrable Kerdi experience will be sent to a Schluter Workshop within the first 90 days at company expense.
- Working competency across at least three of: LVP/LVT, hardwood, laminate, sheet vinyl, carpet. Willingness to develop competency in the remaining product categories on the job.
- Strong diagnostic instincts — can walk into a warranty call cold, figure out what went wrong, and decide on the right corrective action without supervision.
- Professional, customer-facing presence. This person will be the face of Floor Authority in a homeowner's house on a warranty call. Communication and respect for the customer's home are non-negotiable.
- Self-directed and accountable. Most days are run independently from the truck, not from an office. Comfortable managing time, sequencing the day, and being honest about what got done.
- Valid driver's license, clean MVR (FA runs MVR authorizations for all driving roles per policy), and ability to pass a background check.
- Comfort using a smartphone or tablet for FloorCore documentation, photo capture, and time tracking.
- Bilingual English/Spanish a plus given the makeup of installer crews FA works with.
Working Conditions
Field-based role in active residential and commercial construction environments — occupied homes, new construction, multi-family, and commercial sites.
Physical work: lifting up to 50 lbs routinely, extended kneeling, bending, working in tight spaces (showers, closets), and operating power tools (wet saws, grinders, oscillating tools).
Exposure to dust, mortar, adhesives, and waterproofing chemicals — appropriate PPE provided and required.
Work in occupied homes requires care for finished surfaces, customer belongings, and pets — floor protection, clean-up, and respect for the customer's space are part of every job.
Company Benefits
Competitive salary in the $70,000–$80,000 range based on experience and certification.
Company-provided service vehicle, gas card, tools, and consumables.
BCBS medical, dental, and vision insurance (80% employer-paid premium).
Guideline 401(k) safe harbor plan with 4% employer match (100% on first 3% + 50% on next 2%).
Paid time off scaled with tenure (10 days for 0–2 years, 15 days for 2–5 years, 20 days for 5+ years).
8 paid company holidays.
Eligibility for benefits at Day 60 of employment.
Manufacturer training paid by Floor Authority — Schluter Workshops, CTEF Certified Tile Installer (CTI), and product-specific certifications as they advance the role.
What Success Looks Like
- Punch Lists Stay Short: Builder punch items get cleared within agreed-upon windows. Field Managers stop getting pulled off active installs to chase small repairs.
- Warranty Queue Moves: Warranty callbacks are responded to within target SLA, executed cleanly, and don't come back. The warranty backlog shrinks instead of growing.
- Showers Stay on Schedule: When installer crews fall behind, shower waterproofing prep gets done in-house so tile day still hits the calendar — builder deadlines protected.
- Customers Are Satisfied: Warranty visits end with the customer happy. The person who left the house is someone they'd be glad to see again.
- The Data Tells a Story: Warranty visits are documented well enough in FloorCore that the company can see which installers, products, builders, and failure modes are driving the most callbacks — and act on it.
- Quality Bar Rises: Over time, the company's repair work becomes a competitive advantage — builders trust that Floor Authority stands behind the install, and homeowners refer us because the warranty experience was as good as the installation.
