Machine Operator

$22–$27/hour | Santa Cruz, CA

Marianne’s Ice Cream is hiring a Machine Operator to join our production team.

This is a hands-on production role in our ice cream manufacturing facility. Most of your time will be spent working on the production line: loading materials, monitoring product quality, cleaning equipment, supporting changeovers, and helping the team complete the day’s production plan.

Mechanical aptitide & maintenance experience preferred. Maintenance and mechanical work will typically make up a small but very important part of the role. We are looking for someone who is comfortable doing routine production work every day, but who also has the mechanical aptitude to help identify equipment issues, make adjustments, support preventative maintenance, and complete repairs when problems come up.

Role Breakdown

~90% production line work, cleaning, setup, changeovers, and quality monitoring
~10% machine adjustment, troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, reactive maintenance, and repairs

This role is best suited for someone who enjoys steady, hands-on production work and has a strong mechanical mindset.

Requirements

At least 2 years of production, manufacturing, or related hands-on work experience
Comfortable with physical, routine production work
Mechanical aptitude with troubleshooting and maintenance experience
Experience with hand tools, power tools, and basic mechanical repairs
Able to communicate clearly in English in a loud production environment
Able to lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs as needed
Able to bend, squat, stoop, kneel, and crouch as part of daily tasks
Willing to occasionally work outside normal production hours for maintenance-related work

Preferred Experience

Food manufacturing, beverage production, dairy, cannabis, or similar production environment experience
Machine operator and/or machine mechanic experience
Experience with pumps, motors, compressors, refrigeration, chillers, condensers, or fluid-processing equipment
Experience with preventative maintenance systems and logs
Experience in refrigeration/HVAC, automotive repair, or other mechanically oriented work
Bilingual (English/Spanish)

Responsibilities

Work on the production line to support daily ice cream manufacturing
Monitor product quality during production, including texture, flavor, and appearance
Support equipment setup, cleaning, and changeovers
Identify & fix equipment issues or abnormal machine performance
Assist with machine adjustments, troubleshooting, and repairs
Support preventative maintenance tasks such as cleaning, inspection, greasing, basic part replacement, and record keeping
Follow food safety, sanitation, and workplace safety procedures
Maintain clean and organized production areas

Schedule

Full-time
Early morning start, typically around 5:00 AM
Most weeks are ~40 hours, with additional hours based on workload and team needs
Overtime as needed, especially during summer
Some holidays required
Limited vacation during peak season
Occasional maintenance work outside normal production hours will be needed

Benefits

$22–$27/hour, based on experience
