Full Job Description

Location: Springfield, MA
Salary: $110,000–$125,000 per year
Schedule: Full-time, primarily onsite

Our client, a mission-driven nonprofit behavioral health and human services organization, is seeking an experienced Director of Finance to provide strategic and operational leadership for its finance function.

Reporting to the organization’s Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Finance will oversee financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, government contracts and grants, audits, revenue cycle management, cash management, compliance, and internal controls. This individual will also supervise key finance and billing leaders and serve as a financial advisor to senior leadership and program management.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the organization’s annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes.
Monitor financial performance, liquidity, funding gaps, risks, and emerging opportunities.
Prepare and present financial reports, variance analysis, forecasts, and recommendations to senior leadership.
Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting in accordance with nonprofit GAAP.
Manage the financial components of state, federal, and other government-funded contracts and grants, including budgets, amendments, invoicing, reporting, compliance, and closeout.
Serve as a primary fiscal contact for government agencies, funders, auditors, and external financial partners.
Partner with program leaders to review budget-to-actual performance, address variances, and strengthen financial management practices.
Oversee accounting operations, including the general ledger, accounts payable, payroll controls, reconciliations, journal entries, and vendor management.
Direct cash management, banking controls, electronic payments, and cash-flow forecasting.
Provide strategic oversight of billing and revenue cycle operations, including accounts receivable, denials, collections, aging, payer mix, and reimbursement trends.
Coordinate the annual financial statement audit, Massachusetts UFR audit and filing, single audit when applicable, and funder-specific financial reviews.
Develop and maintain effective internal controls, approval processes, cost-allocation practices, and fraud-prevention measures.
Ensure compliance with government contract requirements, 2 CFR Part 200, nonprofit accounting standards, payer requirements, and applicable behavioral health billing regulations.
Lead, mentor, and develop finance and billing team members.
Identify opportunities to improve financial systems, reporting, workflows, data integrity, and audit readiness.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.
At least seven years of progressive nonprofit finance or accounting experience.
At least three years of experience in a supervisory, management, or director-level position.
Direct experience managing Massachusetts state and/or federal contracts, including budgeting, amendments, invoicing, reporting, compliance, and closeout.
Strong knowledge of nonprofit fund accounting and GAAP, including FASB ASC 958.
Experience overseeing third-party billing or revenue cycle operations, including MassHealth or Medicaid billing.
Experience coordinating annual financial statement audits, UFR audits, and/or single audits.
Demonstrated ability to develop internal controls and manage compliance across multiple funding sources.
Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookup functions, and financial modeling.
Strong leadership, communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
Ability to explain financial information clearly to program leaders and other non-financial stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or Public Administration.
Active or inactive CPA license.
Finance leadership experience within behavioral health, human services, or community-based nonprofit organizations.
Familiarity with Massachusetts government contracting and reporting requirements.
Experience working in a multi-entity or affiliated nonprofit structure.
Experience with EHR-integrated billing platforms, revenue cycle analytics, or MIP accounting software.
