ABOUT FCAP

The Fried Center for the Advancement of Potential is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit operating at the intersection of healthcare education, disability inclusion, and preventive fitness. Since 2016, FCAP has trained more than 100 undergraduate UVA student interns — nearly all of whom have gone on to careers in healthcare — while delivering supervised, evidence-based exercise interventions to clients with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and the general population.

Two clinics are currently operational, generating approximately 300 client visits per week. FCAP is entering an ambitious expansion phase, with new university partner clinics planned at Virginia Commonwealth University and William & Mary, and a long-term goal of 15 university-based programs nationally by 2035.

This is a rare opportunity to join a mission-driven organization at an inflection point – one with a proven model, a unique and compelling story, a talented team, and the organizational will to grow.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Chief Operating Officer will build the business infrastructure to support FCAP’s expansion. This is a ground-floor leadership role — part systems builder, part revenue strategist, and part chief of staff. The COO will design and oversee the business side of the organization: financial management, operations, university partnership agreements, communications, board operations, and operational scaffolding for each new clinic site.

The role is built to complement FCAP’s clinical leadership and to anchor its fundraising. Led by the Founding Clinical Director/President, the clinical team oversees the FCAP method, designs the curriculum, and ensures quality across sites. On the business side, the COO will implement FCAP’s revenue strategy, secure institutional commitments, and — in collaboration with the Chairman, Founding Clinical Director/President, and Board — cultivates and stewards major-gift relationships.

The role requires close collaboration and consultation with the Founding Clinical Director to align FCAP’s clinical and operational functions, ensuring that business operations continually serve the nonprofit clinical mission. The COO will hire a Development Manager, who will run day-to-day fundraising execution, building the systems and pipeline for fundraising success.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Operations and Financial Infrastructure

▪ Design and implement the administrative systems that let FCAP operate across multiple university sites: budgeting, payroll, HR, compliance, insurance, and data management.

▪ Establish financial controls, manage cash flow, track spending against budget, and produce regular financial reporting for the board.

▪ Build and maintain the operational playbook for launching each new clinic, coordinating logistics across clinical, university, and FCAP central stakeholders.

▪ Select and implement FCAP’s donor management platform and core development systems, which the Development Manager will then run day to day.

University Partnerships and Agreements

▪ Negotiate, document, and maintain partnership agreements and MOUs with university partners, vendors, and service providers.

▪ Structure each site’s financial partnership on FCAP’s cost-share model and hold partners to a minimum five-year commitment.

▪ Serve as the operational point of contact for university administrators throughout each clinic’s launch and ongoing operation.

Revenue Strategy and Sustainability

▪ Set FCAP’s overall revenue strategy and diversification plan, in close collaboration with the Chairman, Founding Clinical Director, and board.

▪ Oversee earned and institutional revenue — university contributions, fee-based programming, CKC System sales, and corporate partnerships — and steward long-term, endowment-building goals that give each clinic and FCAP central durable footing.

▪ Lead FCAP’s development function and collaborate with the Chairman, Founding Clinical Director, and Board to oversee major-gift cultivation and solicitation.

▪ Hire and manage the Development Manager to run day-to-day fundraising execution.

▪ Lead FCAP’s grant strategy, collaborating with the clinical team and Development Manager to identify grant opportunities, write and secure grants, complete necessary grant reports, and build relationships with grantmakers as needed.

Communications and External Relations

▪ Oversee FCAP’s communications strategy, including website management, digital presence, social media, branding, and public relations.

▪ Build and manage a student intern team that produces FCAP’s social media — giving students hands-on experience while extending the organization’s reach.

▪ Work with the Founding Clinical Director and clinical team to translate program impact into clear narratives for funders, partners, and the public.

▪ Support FCAP’s professional certification and credentialing initiative as the model establishes a recognized professional pathway.

▪ Represent FCAP operationally with university administrators, community organizations, and external stakeholders.

Board Operations and Governance

▪ Collaborate with the Chairman to bring the current working board to the level of a strategic board.

▪ Manage board operations: prepare meeting materials, coordinate committee work, track action items, and support board recruitment and onboarding.

▪ Ensure compliance with nonprofit governance standards, IRS requirements, and state regulations.

▪ Serve as the primary operational interface among the Chairman, clinical leadership, and board.

People, HR, and Team Leadership

▪ Stand up FCAP’s HR infrastructure: hiring and onboarding practices, an employee handbook, performance management, and benefits administration.

▪ Manage payroll, paid-leave and time-off policies, and employment compliance.

▪ Develop a compensation framework, and manage contractor and vendor agreements.

▪ Recruit, manage, and develop FCAP’s central administrative and development staff and coordinate people practices with university-based site staff.

▪ Build organizational culture and internal practices that attract and retain mission-aligned talent.

QUALIFICATIONS

FCAP is open to candidates from a range of backgrounds. Skills developed through graduate business training would apply directly to this role, as would hands-on experience in a mission-driven environment.

Required

▪ 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in nonprofit management, higher education, healthcare or social-enterprise operations, or a related field.

▪ Demonstrated track record of building or managing operational and financial systems, including budgeting and forecasting.

▪ Excellent written and verbal communication.

▪ Sound judgment and discretion with financial information, personnel matters, and stakeholder relationships.

▪ Bachelor’s degree.

Preferred

The ideal COO will be a strategic thinker who is comfortable working with boards, donors, and other high-level stakeholders. They will bring familiarity with fundraising and the ability to design and lead a diverse range of processes, from negotiating agreements to developing and communicating new initiatives.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Salary Range: $100,000 – $150,000, commensurate with experience.
