Director of Nursing – Community Health (House of Respect)
Department: Elder Services – Community Care
Hours: Full-Time (40 hrs/week) | After-hours on-call rotation required

The Puyallup Tribe of Indians is seeking a dedicated and experienced Director of Nursing (DON) to lead nursing and personal care services at the House of Respect Residences Assisted Living Facility. This is an outstanding opportunity for a compassionate Registered Nurse and strong leader who is committed to providing exceptional elder care while fostering a respectful, culturally responsive, and resident-centered environment.

About the Role

The Director of Nursing is responsible for planning, organizing, developing, and directing the overall nursing functions of the Assisted Living Facility while ensuring compliance with applicable Tribal, Federal, State, and local standards. The DON will play a key leadership role in promoting high-quality resident care, resident and family satisfaction, staff development, employee engagement, and the smooth operation of the residence.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and supervise nursing and personal care staff to ensure residents receive safe, compassionate, respectful, and culturally appropriate care.
Promote and protect Elder resident rights, dignity, independence, privacy, personal effects, safety, health, and overall well-being.
Oversee the resident admission process, including eligibility criteria, preadmission assessments, ongoing assessments, care plans, transfers, and discharges.
Monitor changes in residents' health and functioning and ensure appropriate interventions and updates to care plans.
Ensure appropriate staffing levels while managing overtime and agency utilization effectively.
Oversee medication storage, administration, documentation, and proper disposal in accordance with applicable requirements.
Monitor nursing and personal care documentation, charting, temporary service plans, case records, reports, and required forms.
Develop and oversee staff orientation, in-service education, training, continuing education, CPR/First Aid, licensing, and other required credentials.
Participate in hiring, performance evaluations, coaching, counseling, staff development, and corrective action as appropriate.
Collaborate with the Executive Director, Puyallup Tribal Health Authority staff, external healthcare providers, agencies, residents, and families.
Monitor quality assurance activities and prepare statistical data and narrative reports regarding quality management, performance, services, and departmental outcomes.
Ensure resident safety incidents and concerns involving confidentiality, theft, or other issues are promptly reported, investigated, and addressed.
Conduct regular building and grounds walkthroughs to promote cleanliness, organization, safety, and positive relationships with residents.
Maintain strict confidentiality and compliance with applicable privacy requirements, including HIPAA, while protecting resident health information and electronic health records.
Provide leadership in developing strategies to meet departmental goals and objectives and make timely, sound decisions.
Be available by telephone, when assigned, for emergency questions from staff and coordinate appropriate after-hours coverage.

What We’re Looking For

Degree in Nursing.
Current, unrestricted Washington State Registered Nurse (RN) license.
At least two years of management/DNS experience in a long-term care setting.
At least two years of recent long-term care experience, preferably in an Assisted Living Facility or Skilled Nursing Facility.
Demonstrated supervisory experience, including staff assessment, development, training, scheduling, and performance management.
Experience with policy development and implementation.
Strong communication skills and experience preparing reports and presenting information to boards, committees, and/or community groups.
Intermediate computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
Demonstrated understanding of geriatric care needs and family dynamics.
Ability to work effectively and respectfully with Tribal Elders and their families.
Demonstrated cultural awareness, adaptability, flexibility, and respect.
Ability to assess elder care needs and make appropriate recommendations based on previous elder care management, social work, or case planning experience.
Must successfully pass a criminal background check prior to employment and periodically thereafter.
Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted Washington State driver's license.
Must have or obtain CPR/First Aid certification within the first 90 days of employment.
