Sundrop Montessori Preschool seeks an After School Program Lead Preschool Teacher to join our team, at our Montessori preschool in Roscommon, MI. The mission of Sundrop Montessori
Preschool is to provide a nurturing, educationally-rich, early childhood environment that meets the developmental needs of the whole child, while initiating children into a lifelong, meaningful relationship with the natural world.
Program Description:
Sundrop Montessori Preschool “Forest School After School” program offers childcare in a mixed-age session for children ages three to eleven. These sessions run from approximately
3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, and have a 2:20 teacher-child ratio. The children spend a minimum of 1 hour per day outdoors in nature. The program is based at Sundrop Montessori Preschool located at Good Shepherd Methodist Church. Lead Teacher must currently be able to meet the qualifications for Lead Caregiver according to LARA (Licensing and Regulatory Affairs) (see below).
Duties and Responsibilities:
● Design, create, and collaborate with director and assistant to develop an authentic, nature-based after school program that serves the diversity of the local community and follows the local regulations in Northern Michigan.
● Manage the delivery of a quality program to provide a positive healthy, low stress, and safe learning environment to meet the educational and developmental needs of young children by focusing on learning styles and temperament.
● Promote the child’s development in the cognitive, social-emotional, and physical domains with an emphasis in compassion, language, social competence, ethnic and disability awareness; as well as health & safety.
● Must love nature and enjoy spending hours outside at a time.
● Must be comfortable working with a variety of ages (3-11).
● Prepare the classroom environment and forest environment, materials and equipment; ensure that all materials are in good repair and all sets complete. Develop and make materials when needed.
● Plan and implement lesson plans that are nature-based, place-based, or STEAM based.
No technology. Give appropriate presentations of materials and activities. Allow input from the program team and parents.
● Give support to children who require help in homework or reading responsibilities.
● Create a monthly snack calendar and shopping list.
● Provide bi-weekly email updates to the director that communicates classroom activities.
● Perform classroom organizational and some administrative duties.
● With the financial and operational support of the Board of Directors and other local resources, perform administrative duties including but not limited to: enrollment record keeping, recruitment/marketing outreach.
● Supervise the classroom assistant, and/or any aides, interns, substitutes, parent volunteers. Communicate necessary instruction and training for those assisting in the classroom environment to the director.
● Assist in the planning and maintenance of the outdoor environment.
● Assess prospective children when they visit the school.
● Provide first aid as needed and complete appropriate forms for parents.
● Other duties as assigned
Lead After School Teacher Requirements:
The successful candidate will have/demonstrate the following:
● Lead Caregiver Qualified (Can meet ONE of the qualifications below) a. Bachelor’s degree preferred - Early Childhood Education, child development, or a child-related field (ex. elementary education) b. Montessori credential with 480 hours of experience c. Associate’s degree or higher in early childhood education or child development d. Valid child development associate credential with 480 hours of experience e. High school diploma or GED with 12 semester hours of coursework in a child-related field and 960 hours of experience f. High school diploma or GED with 12 semester hours, 18 CEUs, or a combination to equal 180 clock hours with 1,920 hours of experience g. High school diploma or GED with 6 semester hours, 9 CEUs, or a combination to equal 90 clock hours with 3,840 hours of experience
● Knowledge of the outdoors and outdoor education preferred.
● Classroom experience, educational program planning, development and implementation.
● Entrepreneurial leadership - you demonstrate flexibility, open-mindedness, and see opportunity in obstacles, and are energized by using creativity and resourcefulness to anticipate challenges and create solutions to problems.
● Willingness to work hard - You have the aptitude, stamina, time, and appetite to raise yourself to the challenge of leading the program. You will not be alone, but you will be busy.
● Creative and enthusiastic communication/presentation skills.
● Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently.
● Strong organizational, time-management, and multi-tasking skills.
● Sound character and ability to pass a criminal background check.
● First Aid, CPR, certified (Reimbursed)
● Complete Health and Safety Trainings 1, 2, & 3 through MiRegistry (Reimbursed)
Compensation and Benefits:
● Hourly pay of $18-20 per hour
● Tuition reimbursement for child enrolled in After School Program
Start Date:
● After school program begins August 17th
● Lead would be expected to prepare the classroom, program schedule, snack calendar, and lesson plans prior to the start of August 17th.
