FULL TIME PSYCHIATRIST
Capstone Health seeks a Psychiatrist to join the Capstone team. The ideal candidate is service orientated and culturally sensitive; experience in providing treatment plans and education to patients and their families, parents, or guardians and familial support throughout treatment program.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Psychiatrist provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and medication management services for patients with mental health and co-occurring substance use disorders. The Psychiatrist collaborates with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to develop individualized treatment plans, promote recovery, and improve patient outcomes through evidence-based, patient-centered care.
The Psychiatrist supports integrated behavioral health services by participating in quality improvement initiatives, promoting patient safety, ensuring regulatory compliance, and providing clinical leadership consistent with Capstone Health's mission, vision, and values.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical Services
- Perform comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, diagnostic assessments, and ongoing psychiatric treatment for children, adolescents, and adults, as assigned.
- Diagnose mental health and co-occurring substance use disorders using accepted clinical standards and diagnostic criteria.
- Develop, implement, evaluate, and revise individualized treatment plans in collaboration with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary care team.
- Prescribe, monitor, and manage psychotropic medications in accordance with evidence-based clinical practice, applicable laws, and organizational policies.
- Conduct medication management visits and evaluate treatment effectiveness, medication adherence, side effects, and patient progress.
- Provide crisis intervention, suicide risk assessments, safety planning, and appropriate referrals as clinically indicated.
- Provide education to patients, families, and caregivers regarding diagnoses, treatment options, medications, expected outcomes, and recovery planning.
- Collaborate with primary care providers and behavioral health professionals to support integrated treatment of co-occurring medical and behavioral health conditions.
Care Coordination
- Coordinate psychiatric care with primary care providers, behavioral health clinicians, nursing staff, care coordinators, and community providers.
- Participate in interdisciplinary case reviews and treatment planning.
- Coordinate referrals for specialty behavioral health services, inpatient psychiatric treatment, residential services, and community resources, as appropriate.
- Promote continuity of care through timely follow-up and communication with the interdisciplinary care team.
Clinical Leadership
- Provide clinical consultation and guidance to behavioral health staff and other members of the healthcare team.
- Support clinical education and mentoring of students, residents, or other learners participating in approved clinical rotations, when applicable.
- Participate in the development and implementation of behavioral health policies, procedures, and clinical protocols.
- Promote evidence-based psychiatric practice and continuous clinical improvement.
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate, timely, and complete documentation in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Complete psychiatric evaluations, progress notes, treatment plans, medication documentation, and other required clinical documentation in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain records in compliance with HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2 (when applicable), payer requirements, and applicable federal and state laws.
- Assist with quality reporting, peer review activities, and organizational performance metrics.
Quality, Risk Management, and Patient Safety
- Participate in organizational quality improvement, performance improvement, compliance, patient safety, and risk management initiatives.
- Promote evidence-based psychiatric practice and quality behavioral health services.
- Identify and communicate patient safety concerns, clinical risks, and compliance issues through established reporting processes.
- Participate in audits, accreditation activities, peer review, and corrective action initiatives.
- Support compliance with HRSA Health Center Program requirements, FTCA risk management expectations, HIPAA, DEA regulations, Alabama Board of Medical Examiners requirements, and organizational policies.
- Provide quality and patient safety oversight within assigned clinical responsibilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
Required
- Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) from an accredited medical school.
- Successful completion of an accredited Psychiatry residency program.
Required Licensure and Certification
- Current, unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Alabama.
- Board Eligible or Board Certified in Psychiatry.
- Current DEA registration.
- Current Alabama Controlled Substances Certificate, if required.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Experience
Required
- Minimum of five (5) years of clinical psychiatric practice experience.
Preferred
- Experience in a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), community mental health center, or integrated healthcare setting.
- Experience treating co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
- Experience using Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.
- Experience working within interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Demonstrated knowledge of psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, treatment planning, psychopharmacology, and evidence-based practices for the treatment of mental health and co-occurring substance use disorders.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and professional standards, including HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, DEA requirements, Alabama Board of Medical Examiners regulations, HRSA/FQHC requirements, and organizational policies.
- Ability to exercise sound clinical judgment, critical thinking, and ethical decision-making in the assessment and treatment of patients with complex behavioral health needs.
- Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, medication management, and treatment planning skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to establish effective therapeutic relationships with patients, families, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
- Ability to effectively manage crisis situations, assess suicide and violence risk, and implement appropriate clinical interventions.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple clinical responsibilities in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
- Proficiency in the use of Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems, clinical documentation, and standard computer applications.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, advanced practice providers, behavioral health professionals, nursing staff, care coordinators, and community partners to support integrated, patient-centered care.
- Commitment to continuous learning, quality improvement, patient safety, and professional development.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is performed primarily in outpatient clinical and office settings.
- Frequent interaction with patients, families, healthcare providers, and community partners.
- Regular use of Electronic Medical Records, computers, telephones, and office equipment.
- Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to remain stationary for extended periods while evaluating patients and completing documentation.
- Ability to move throughout clinic locations.
- Ability to communicate effectively in person, electronically, and by telephone.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment and computer systems.
- Occasionally lift or carry items weighing up to 20 pounds.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
