Under the direct supervision of the Youth Services Manager, the incumbent is responsible for assisting children and caregivers at the Youth Services Information Desk and providing general support for the Youth Services Department, including programming, collection development, and outreach.
Position Duties and Responsibilities:
- Staffs the information desk to assist library customers in-person, by phone, and through email with inquiries regarding library materials, library services, and other sources of information;
- Plans and conducts children’s programs including story times for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, as well as programs for school-age children;
- Visits schools and other local organizations and community events to promote library resources and programs such as summer reading;
- Stays abreast of new children’s literature and popular children’s media in order to better provide readers’ advisory services and make beneficial purchase suggestions;
- Stays abreast of current research on early literacy and early childhood development;
- Conducts shelf reading and weeding of collection;
- Demonstrates use of catalog and electronic databases to customers;
- Provides technology instruction to customers and troubleshoots in the use of internet, computers, printers, copiers, tablets, and e-book readers;
- Designs attractive, thematic book displays;
- Interprets policies and procedures of the library to the public and
- Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:
Master’s Degree in Library & Information Science from an ALA-accredited school. Applicant must possess or obtain, within 3 months of hire, a license to practice as a registered professional librarian by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Salary: $58,320.86 - $102,632.14
Hiring Salary Range: $58,320.86-$76,364.86

Schedule:Hours are scheduled to meet the staffing needs of the library, and will include days, evenings, and two Saturdays per month.
Sunday/Substitute Librarian Position
4 Hours a Week (as needed)
The Alexandria Library is searching for a part-time Librarian. The incumbent is responsible for assisting customers at the Reference/Information Desk and providing general support for the Adult Services Department.
Duties:
- Answers all types of reference questions using print and digital sources in an efficient and courteous manner
- Staffs the information desk to assist library customers in person and by phone with inquiries regarding library materials and other sources of information
- Assists customers with the online catalog, electronic reference services, and with the automated internet registration and printing
- Interprets policies and procedures of the library to the public
- Furnishes information about library activities, facilities, rules, and services
- Helps customers with other community services provided through the Library
- Qualify to become a U.S. passport agent
- Other duties as assigned

LIBRARIAN IV / CENTRAL LIBRARY MANAGER

The Librarian IV is responsible for the operation of the City of Alexandria’s Central Library, the largest library in the system. The Librarian IV supervises the Circulation, Adult Services and Youth Services Section Managers of the Central Library. In addition, this position oversees several citywide library services, including Interlibrary Loan Service, Talking Books Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, and Outreach Services. The Librarian IV receives general supervision from the Deputy Director of Libraries.
Position Duties and Responsibilities:
Prepares annual goals and objectives for the Central Library
Plans and coordinates the library services of the Central Library
Supervises and evaluates the Section Managers of the Central Library; assists with writing position descriptions and manages the hiring process for vacant positions, including scheduling and leading interviews, writing interview questions, and evaluating candidates
Delegates library duties, assigns special projects and approves leave
Works with the Adult Services Department to purchase new print materials and evaluate the adult material collections; Oversees total materials budget, including children’s and teen budgets.
Interprets library policies, resolves patron complaints and provides library information for the public
Writes monthly, annual, and special reports for Library Administration; leads the system-wide Reference Survey project annually
Participates in the development of new library policies and procedures for the library system
Reviews and writes personnel budget recommendations for Library Administration
Acts as liaison for the Friends of the Library at the Central Library and manages yearly Friends programming budgets
Plans special library programs at the Central Library, including tours and presentations
Completes passport agent training and serves as the passport Facility Manager
Secures and ensures the security of the building and the safety of employees
Reports building issues and works with Library Administration and City General Services to oversee repairs and large building projects
Manages the upkeep of the Reading Garden space, including coordinating ongoing maintenance of the garden beds with local gardeners and funding for maintenance and repairs with the Beatley Friends
Represents the library at City intradepartmental meetings, regional professional meetings, and community meetings
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of professional library principles, methods, materials, and practices, especially as they relate to the field of public librarianship and management
The ability to analyze professional and administrative problems, to make recommendations, and take appropriate actions in their solution
The ability to supervise, council, and train professional, paraprofessional ,and support staff in the various activities of a branch library or major section of the library
The ability to interpret library policies and objectives to community groups, public officials, City departments, business and education leaders, and the general public
The ability to participate in the development or improvement of professional library methods and standards and to establish and maintain effective public relations
Thorough knowledge of collection management practices, including knowledge of reader interests, books, and authors

Custodian Supervisor
Full time/ All Locations
40 Hours per week
A Custodian Supervisor supervises and performs custodial duties for one or more public buildings. An employee in this class is responsible for planning, assigning and supervising the work and training of Custodians engaged in cleaning and minor maintenance tasks. Responsibilities may include coordination of activities on a multiple shift operation in a group of public buildings. Specific oral and written instructions accompany major assignments but the employee makes routine decisions and is responsible for planning work schedules and methods. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed on the basis of results obtained.
Duties include:
- Supervises custodial staff and facility operation;
- Routinely performs custodial duties at one or more of the Library Branches;
- Directs other employees and oversees all work activities for the purpose of insuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner;
- Evaluates and implements projects for the purpose of carrying out goals and objectives within area of responsibility;
- Supervises custodial functions (e.g. planning, scheduling, training, discipline, evaluation) for the purpose of insuring the Department functions in a safe and efficient manner;
- Reviews prospective custodial candidates (e.g. screening, interviewing, etc.) for the purpose of hiring new custodial staff;
- Plans cleaning schedules and sequences custodial work operations to assure an even flow and distribution of work, expeditious opening of buildings for meetings and rentals, and the meeting of schedules and deadlines;
- Reviews custodial work schedules to meet changes in workload considering such factors as peak loads, availability of custodians, and time required to perform the custodial work;
- Assigns work to subordinate custodians, explains work requirements, instructs them in proper custodial methods, reviews completed work and evaluates it for quality and quantity;
- Sets standards of adequacy for completion of prescribed custodial tasks;
- Coordinates custodial operations with custodial representatives in other buildings, concerning matters of work remaining to be done, work priorities and custodial procedures;
- Reassigns crews and custodial personnel, as necessary, in order to accomplish custodial work in the most effective manner;
- Supervises the periodic checks and minor repair of lighting and plumbing equipment, replacement of fuses, burned out bulbs, fluorescent tubes and starters;
- Acts as liaison for requests for skilled repairs in emergencies or as maintenance work is required;
- Maintains the level of custodial supplies on hand to accomplish tasks (within budget guidelines), coordinates the ordering of supplies and equipment, and ensures that custodial equipment is maintained in good working condition, keeping accurate maintenance and repair records and physical inventory records of cleaning equipment;
- Anticipates repair/maintenance needs and takes preventative measures to maintain service and safety levels;
- Receives and store incoming stock, deliver stock and equipment to all health department sites;
- Performs building inspections, minor maintenance/repairs at all sites, sends routine and emergency work orders, serves as liaison to City General Services;
- Performs other related duties.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of materials, supplies and practices essential to the cleaning of buildings; thorough knowledge of the operation and care of wet and dry vacuum cleaners, floor buffing machines, mop wringers, mops, brushes, soaps, floor stripping materials, cleaning fluids, floor waxes and other materials and equipment related to care of buildings; thorough knowledge of the hazards and precautionary methods necessary to custodial operations; ability to assign and check the work of subordinates and to train and instruct employees in building cleaning operations and safety; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, building occupants and the public; ability to maintain necessary records relating to custodial task operations and prepare simple written reports.
- Must be able to lift 20-50 lbs. on a regular basis without help and carry custodial materials, office supplies, furniture, tools, and other materials in a safe and secure manner
- Must have a valid local driver's license and be insurable by the Alexandria Library’s insurance company
- Must own or have regular access to an automobile, and must be able to travel to different locations - when needed. Employees will be reimbursed at the current federal mileage reimbursement rate.
Schedule: Hours are scheduled to meet the needs of the Library and will include evenings, Saturdays and occasional Sundays.
Salary: $41,147.08- $72,410.52
