Full Job Description

Senior HERS Rater / Commissioning Agent

VCA Green is a leading sustainability and energy consulting firm recognized throughout California for CALGreen and Energy Code compliance, and nationally for its green building expertise. We support projects from design through construction and into building operations.

As part of our continued growth, we are seeking an experienced HERS Rater / Commissioning Agent to lead residential energy code compliance and green building verification across Southern California. This role is best suited for an expert with extensive field experience, specifically specializing in LEED and Title 24 Building Commissioning (Cx). An active HERS/ECC Rater certification is required.

In this role, you will manage quality control (QC) activities for field tasks in the office, perform on-site observations, testing, and verification in the field to ensure compliance with the California Energy Code, and serve as a trusted technical resource for builders, contractors, and project teams.

What You’ll Do

Manage field verification for green building programs including LEED (BD+C, O+M, and Homes), GreenPoint Rated, NGBS, and ENERGY STAR.
Complete accurate documentation and technical reports for project submittals.
Communicate professionally on-site with builders, contractors, and homeowners.
Conduct field verification for green building programs such as LEED, GreenPoint Rated, NGBS, and ENERGY STAR.
Perform and/or support HVAC functional performance testing, lighting controls testing, and building commissioning activities.
Oversight on commissioning tasks for LEED (BD+C, O+M, and Homes) and Title 24 compliance.
Perform HERS/ECC field testing, including duct leakage testing, blower door testing, indoor air quality (IAQ) testing, Quality Insulation Installation (QII) verification, minimum airflow measurements, and refrigerant charge testing.
Review field conditions and identify compliance issues, providing clear recommendations for resolution.
Travel to multiple job sites throughout Southern California.

What We’re Looking For

Required:

Active HERS/ECC Rater certification through an accredited HERS Provider.
4+ years of HERS field experience.
Strong understanding of California Title 24 Energy Code and compliance requirements.
Strong proficiency in Title 24 and LEED Building Commissioning (Cx).
Experience with LEED (BD+C, O+M, and Homes) commissioning and verification protocols.
Certified Lighting Controls Acceptance Test Technician (LATT).
Certified Mechanical Acceptance Test Technician (MATT).
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work directly with clients and field teams.
Valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
Ability to climb ladders and access crawlspaces and attics.
Reliable vehicle capable of hauling testing equipment.

Preferred:

Familiarity with GreenPoint Rated, NGBS, or ENERGY STAR programs.
Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
Ability to work independently and manage complex, multi-phase projects.
