Full Job Description

Austin Constructors, LLC is seeking an experienced Construction Estimator to support our estimating, bidding, and preconstruction activities.

Job Reports To: President

The Construction Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive estimates for civil, concrete, infrastructure, and public works construction projects. This position will review plans, specifications, bid documents, and project requirements; perform detailed quantity takeoffs; obtain subcontractor and material pricing; prepare complete bid packages; and assist with bid submissions and post-bid requirements.

The Estimator will work closely with company leadership, Project Managers, Operations, subcontractors, vendors, suppliers, public agencies, and project owners throughout the bidding process and will play an important role in transitioning awarded projects from estimating to operations.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, analytical, and experienced in construction estimating, with the ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines in a fast-paced construction environment.

Key Responsibilities

Estimating & Quantity Takeoffs

Review construction plans, specifications, bid documents, addenda, and other project information to determine project scope and requirements.
Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for labor, materials, equipment, subcontracted work, and other project components.
Develop accurate and competitive cost estimates based on project requirements and company production expectations.
Evaluate anticipated labor, equipment, material, subcontractor, and other project costs.
Identify potential project risks, unusual conditions, exclusions, discrepancies, and items requiring clarification.
Attend site visits, pre-bid meetings, and other project meetings as necessary to evaluate existing conditions and project requirements.

Bid Preparation & Submission

Prepare complete bid packages in accordance with owner and project requirements.
Obtain and review subcontractor, supplier, and material quotes.
Coordinate bid bond requests and other required bid documentation.
Prepare minority participation documentation and other required public bid forms.
Submit bids electronically or physically by required deadlines.
Review bid packages for accuracy, completeness, and compliance prior to submission.
Prepare and provide required post-bid documentation.
Respond to requests for bid clarification, revised pricing, or additional supporting information.

Bid Opportunity Management

Actively search for and identify new bidding opportunities that align with the company’s scope of work, capabilities, and target markets.Maintain an organized list and calendar of current and upcoming bidding opportunities.
Provide potential bid opportunities and bid schedules to company leadership for review.
Track submitted bids through award.
Obtain and maintain certified bid tabulations when available.
Maintain estimating software and bid notification subscriptions.

Subcontractor & Vendor Coordination

Solicit competitive pricing from subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors.
Provide appropriate plans, specifications, quantities, and scope information necessary to obtain accurate pricing.
Review quotes for completeness and verify that pricing aligns with the required scope of work.
Identify gaps, exclusions, or inconsistencies in subcontractor and supplier proposals.
Develop and maintain professional relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors.

Estimating-to-Operations Project Handoff

Upon project award, prepare and conduct a formal estimating-to-operations handoff with the assigned Project Manager and Operations team.
Review the final estimate, bid quantities, labor and equipment assumptions, production rates, material pricing, subcontractor and vendor quotes, and overall project pricing.
Clearly communicate all bid assumptions, exclusions, clarifications, allowances, and identified project risks.
Provide the project team with final bid documents, takeoffs, subcontractor/vendor information, and supporting estimating documentation.
Review the project scope with the Project Manager to ensure a clear understanding of what was included in the bid and identify items requiring immediate follow-up.
Remain available after project startup to answer estimating-related questions and provide clarification regarding the original bid.

Estimating Records & Reporting

Maintain organized electronic records of estimates, takeoffs, quotes, bid documents, correspondence, and bid results.
Maintain historical pricing and estimating information to support future bids.
Track bid activity, awards, losses, and other estimating performance information.
Maintain confidentiality of company pricing, estimating methods, subcontractor pricing, and other proprietary information.

Qualifications & Experience

Previous construction estimating or related preconstruction experience required.
Experience performing detailed quantity takeoffs and developing construction estimates.
Experience reading and interpreting construction plans, specifications, bid documents, and addenda.
Experience soliciting, reviewing, and evaluating subcontractor and vendor pricing.
Experience preparing and submitting complete construction bids.
Strong understanding of labor, material, equipment, subcontractor, and other construction costs.
Experience with public works, municipal, civil, concrete, roadway, sidewalk/ADA, utility, or infrastructure construction is strongly preferred.
Experience with public agency bidding and electronic bidding platforms is preferred.
Familiarity with bid bonds, minority participation requirements, bid tabulations, and public bid documentation is preferred.
Proficiency with estimating software and Microsoft Office applications.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
An equivalent combination of construction estimating, field, project management, education, and relevant industry experience may be considered.
