Full Job Description

Job Summary

The Production Manager carries end-to-end accountability for the performance of the assigned production area. That means the numbers on the board at the end of the shift, the condition of the product leaving the line, the safety of everyone in the department, and the capability of the supervisors and operators who make it all happen.

The right candidate is comfortable spending the majority of the day in the plant rather than behind a desk, reads a line quickly enough to catch problems before they compound, and treats developing people as part of the job rather than something separate from it. Prior accountability for HACCP and SQF requirements in an operating facility is essential.

Areas of responsibility

Direct daily operations across production lines to meet output, yield, and quality targets
Maintain a visible presence in the production area, checking in with team members regularly
Identify process deviations and partner with the General Manager to find solutions
Confirm materials, tooling, documentation, and staffing are in place before each run begins
Manage raw material consumption, yield loss, and scrap against established targets
Follow all HACCP plan requirements, SQF system elements, and Good Manufacturing Practices
Verify that critical control point monitoring, documentation, and corrective actions are completed accurately and on schedule
Maintain production area in an audit-ready condition year-round and serve as a department contact during customer, regulatory, and third-party audits
Respond timely to sanitation findings, allergen control concerns, and product hold decisions, escalating when the situation warrants
Consistently enforce PPE, lockout and tagout, and machine guarding requirements
Operate the department in compliance with OSHA and Cal/OSHA standards and internal safety policy
Investigate incidents and near misses, closing the loop with team communication
Assess team capability, identify skill gaps, and build development plans accordingly
Set clear expectations and provide constructive feedback to team members as needed
Partner with the General Manager to establish and execute improvement priorities
Analyze shift reporting and downtime data to surface recurring problems and underlying causes
Support inventory management for raw materials, packaging, and finished goods
Place and track orders through online ordering and tracking systems

Qualifications

Minimum of 10 years of production management experience
Bachelor's degree
Direct working experience with an SQF food safety program in a manufacturing facility
Demonstrated success leading a team, including supervisors or leads, in a production setting
Background in food production or food manufacturing
Practical knowledge of GMPs and OSHA requirements as they apply on a plant floor
Ability to communicate clearly with hourly associates, peer managers, and senior leadership
Experienced with production reporting systems, scheduling tools, and standard business software
Proficient in Excel, Word, email, and Teams or Zoom, with the ability to use online ordering and tracking software

Certifications

Current HACCP certification. A candidate with strong hands-on HACCP experience who is not currently certified may complete certification within the first 90 days.
Better Process Control School certification for acidified foods, obtained after hire if not already held. This is a short online course and the company covers the cost.
