Full Job Description

This Operations Manager – Metals Recycling role is a strong opportunity for those with non-ferrous scrap recycling experience who are ready to lead a critical part of yard and processing operations. The position oversees safety, training, equipment, inventory, workflow, staffing, and process improvement, making it a highly visible leadership role with broad day-to-day impact.

Non-ferrous materials supervisory experience in a scrap metals recycling yard needed
Up to $115,000/year (depending on experience)

Essential Functions:

Ensures safe work practices and equipment are always used and that documentation, inspections, and current practices are in accordance with corporate safety policies, OSHA, and other regulatory guidelines. In addition, provides a safe environment for all employees, customers, and visitors.
Creates Health & Safety Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) with Regional Safety Engineer(s).
Ensures all department employees receive timely safety and operational training and that the appropriate documents (signed acknowledgement forms) are prepared. Maintains employee files per regional practice.
Assigns an employee to be on the Safety Committee and personally attends Safety Committee meetings on rotation with other managers.
Monitors safety program to reduce accident frequency within department, implements new departmental safety ideas/procedures in line with overall MRB Health & Safety goals.
Responsible for understanding and monitoring the regulatory environment as it affects this department and the Company’s relationship with the regulatory agencies.
Directs, evaluates, schedules and coordinates equipment and personnel to support daily NF operations, including positioning for purchasing, processing, material processing, and loading of nonferrous scrap.
Creates and maintain a layout plan for all physical spaces assigned to NF processing and shipping. Identify work in progress and finished goods storage bins and equipment locations to ensure a proper workflow is achieved.
Submits and/or implements approved process improvement suggestions to improve overall refining quality, profitability and or safety within the NF department.
Inspects allocated department equipment to ensure all assets are working within stated guidelines and submits work orders to maintenance staff as needed or required.
Submits purchase orders as needed or required to maintain or enhance department operations.
Maintains accurate inventory reporting records and conducts physical inventory audits monthly with Financial Business Partner and observes perpetual inventory of unfinished and finished goods.
Partners with commercial operations to develop sales to reduce the expense associated with carrying high inventory volumes.
Partners with the commercial team to develop strategic buying programs that will support production and yard capacity, taking into consideration loading and transportation processes, schedules, and availability.
Monitors and maintains exempt and and/or hourly staff at cost effective and competitive levels.
Monitors supervisory practices for self and direct reports to ensure compliance with HR policies and union contracts, as applicable.
Reviews performance of direct reports.
Interviews prospective management and/or production employees.
Works with Human Resources personnel to prepare job descriptions.
Special Projects
Performs other special projects as needed or assigned.

Internal Control Responsibilities:

Supports the Company’s Internal Control process which includes understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls as well as suggesting and making modifications to the policies, procedures, and controls to better relate to the business.
Communicates upward problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.

Job Conditions:

Exposure to physical operations at metal recycling yards; it is necessary to walk/climb in active industrial yards with uneven surfaces and to out-of-the-way areas
Occasional exposure to inclement weather conditions and some minimum travel is required
Work pressure can be substantial during peak times, requiring considerable adaptability; disturbances of workflow, and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis. Offsite work involves meeting in person with select customers and visiting other Radius Recycling locations.

Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions:

Ability to: lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally
Ability to communicate by speech and hearing continuously
Communication is primarily by phone, email and sometimes in person, with other departments
Visual acuity needed for close detail work, preparing, and analyzing data figures and computer use.

Qualifications:

A High School Diploma or equivalent; High School or better level mathematical skills: minimum 5 years metal recycling industry experience. Incumbent must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a motor vehicle.
Thorough knowledge of NF Materials Grading; good judgment, interpersonal communications; self-starter; good organizational skills; ability to negotiate; past supervisory experience a plus.
