School Cook

Buffalo Science Charter School

Position Summary

The School Cook is responsible for preparing nutritious, high-quality meals for students and staff in accordance with USDA Child Nutrition Program guidelines and all applicable food safety standards. This position ensures meals are prepared, cooked, and served in a safe, timely, and efficient manner within a school kitchen environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Prepare and cook breakfast and lunch meals according to approved menus and standardized recipes
Ensure meals meet USDA nutrition guidelines, portion requirements, and quality standards
Maintain consistency in food preparation, presentation, and service
Oversee daily kitchen production schedules and meal preparation timelines
Support, direct, and train Kitchen Aides in daily food service operations
Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen, equipment, and food preparation areas
Ensure proper storage, labeling, dating, and rotation of food supplies (FIFO method)
Assist with receiving, inspecting, and storing food deliveries
Monitor inventory levels and communicate supply needs to Food Service Manager
Maintain production records, temperature logs, and required documentation
Ensure compliance with USDA regulations, local health codes, and school nutrition policies
Support meal service line setup, execution, and breakdown
Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Prior experience in food service, institutional cooking, or commercial kitchen operations preferred
Knowledge of safe food handling practices and kitchen sanitation standards
Ability to follow standardized recipes and production procedures
Strong organizational and time management skills
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods
ServSafe certification preferred or willingness to obtain upon hire

Work Schedule

This is a 10-month position aligned with the school academic calendar. Work hours are based on kitchen production schedules and meal service needs during the school year.

Food Service Manager or School Administration

Compensation & Benefits

Annual salary: $55,000–$65,000 (based on experience)
10-month position aligned with the school calendar
Eligibility for health, dental, and vision insurance
PTO accrual in accordance with Buffalo Science Charter School policy (up to 80 hours annually)

Work Environment

Work is performed in a school kitchen and cafeteria setting with exposure to heat, kitchen equipment, and food service operations. This position requires adherence to food safety, sanitation, and operational standards at all times.
