Full Job Description

Controller – Automotive Dealership

As the Controller, you will serve as the key leader for all financial and accounting operations. You will provide accurate, timely financial information and act as a strategic partner to the leadership team and department heads in driving business decisions and profitability. This senior leadership role offers the opportunity to modernize accounting processes, implement new technologies, streamline operations, and contribute significantly to the dealership's growth and success.

Key Responsibilities:

Oversee all accounting and financial operations of the dealership, ensuring the accuracy, timeliness, and transparency of financial reporting to accurately reflect the dealership's financial position.
Prepare and deliver complete monthly financial statements (including balance sheet, income statement, and supporting schedules) in accordance with manufacturer guidelines, dealership policies, and GAAP.
Provide detailed sales and expense analyses across all departments, highlighting potential issues, opportunities for improvement, and actionable strategies to enhance profitability in alignment with monthly and annual forecasts.
Lead efforts to streamline and modernize business office processes, improve departmental efficiency, and integrate new technologies and best practices.
Establish, maintain, and monitor a robust internal control environment, including proper segregation of duties, to safeguard assets and ensure compliance.
Manage and reconcile key accounts, including general ledger, cash, accounts payable/receivable, OEM parts inventory, floorplan financing, and related dealership schedules.
Oversee banking operations, cash flow management, disbursements, bank reconciliations, and daily financial reporting.
Ensure full compliance with all manufacturer (OEM) requirements, including warranty claims, rebates, incentives, co-op advertising, interest protection, vehicle registration, contracting, and other regulatory obligations.
Handle tax reporting and compliance with federal, state, and local taxing authorities; assist with year-end audits and coordinate with external auditors/CPAs for financial statements and tax filings.
Supervise, train, and develop the accounting office team (including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, title/registration, and clerical staff) to maintain high performance and data integrity.
Collaborate with department managers, business office staff, and leadership to identify and resolve discrepancies in financial reports, ledgers, and operational data.
Support HR-related compliance across the dealership, promoting a safe, structured, and legally compliant workplace environment.
Perform additional financial analysis, budgeting support, forecasting, and special projects as needed to support overall dealership objectives.

Requirements:

Minimum of 3–5+ years of progressive experience in accounting/finance, with at least 2–3 years in an automotive dealership environment (prior experience as a Dealership Controller, Assistant Controller, or Office Manager strongly preferred).
Proven track record managing dealership accounting functions, including financial statement preparation, internal controls, floorplan reconciliation, and OEM compliance.
Strong working knowledge of GAAP, dealership-specific accounting practices, and common dealership management systems (DMS) such as CDK, Reynolds & Reynolds, Dealertrack, Tekion, or similar platforms.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (especially advanced Excel for financial modeling, analysis, and reporting); familiarity with payroll software and general ledger systems.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with high attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Strong leadership and team management experience, with the ability to train, mentor, and develop accounting staff.
Exceptional communication skills (verbal and written) to explain complex financial information clearly to non-finance stakeholders and collaborate effectively across departments.
High ethical standards, integrity, and commitment to confidentiality and compliance.
Valid driver's license and clean driving record (required for dealership operations).
Ability to pass pre-employment background check, drug screening, and any other required checks.

The Controller plays a pivotal role in maintaining financial integrity while partnering with management to support sustained growth and operational excellence.
