POSITION OVERVIEW
The President & CEO serves as the chief executive, community leader, and public voice of the Greater Redding Chamber of Commerce. This position is responsible for advancing the Chamber’s mission to improve the business climate and economic health of the Redding area while helping shape a positive, ambitious vision for the future of the community.
The President & CEO must be comfortable operating at the intersection of business, local government, tourism, economic development, and community leadership. The role requires someone who can build trust across different constituencies, develop strong relationships with elected officials and community leaders, advocate effectively for the business community, and bring people together around issues that matter to Redding’s future.
Success in this position depends heavily on relational capital. The President & CEO should be visible, accessible, politically aware without being unnecessarily political, and able to navigate complex community issues with tact, judgment, and credibility.
In addition to leading the Chamber, the President & CEO provides executive leadership for Visit Redding and works closely with tourism partners to strengthen Redding’s position as a destination and increase the economic impact of tourism throughout the region.
The President & CEO also plays an important role in the financial strength of the organization by cultivating annual sponsors, major investors, and strategic partners who believe in the Chamber’s mission and community impact.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESCommunity Leadership, Advocacy & Vision
- Serve as a leading advocate for Redding’s business community and promote policies that support economic growth, investment, job creation, and a strong quality of life.
- Maintain strong working relationships with elected officials, local government executives, public agencies, business leaders, education partners, nonprofit organizations, and other community stakeholders.
- Regularly engage with the City of Redding, Shasta County, regional agencies, and state and federal representatives on issues affecting the business community.
- Help identify emerging community challenges and opportunities and position the Chamber as a constructive leader in developing solutions.
- Build coalitions around important community priorities and help develop a long-term vision for Redding’s economic and community future.
- Represent the Chamber in public meetings, media interviews, community events, speaking engagements, and other high-profile settings.
- Lead the Chamber’s government affairs and advocacy efforts in coordination with the Board of Directors and appropriate committees.
- Approach controversial or sensitive issues with tact, sound judgment, diplomacy, and an understanding of the Chamber’s role as a convener.
Relationships, Sponsorships & Community Presence
- Build and maintain meaningful relationships throughout the business community and broader region.
- Develop trusted relationships with Chamber members and understand the opportunities and challenges facing local employers.
- Maintain a highly visible presence throughout the community by attending important meetings, events, ribbon cuttings, business visits, and civic activities.
- Strengthen partnerships with organizations whose work intersects with the Chamber’s mission.
- Lead the Chamber’s annual sponsorship and partnership development efforts by cultivating strong relationships with major investors, corporate partners, and community stakeholders.
- Personally engage in sponsorship recruitment, retention, and stewardship, clearly communicating the Chamber’s value, impact, and vision for the community.
- Work with staff and the Board to grow annual sponsorship revenue and develop meaningful partnership opportunities that align with the Chamber’s mission.
- Ensure sponsors and investors receive strong value and recognition while maintaining the credibility, independence, and long-term relationships of the Chamber.
- Protect and strengthen the Chamber’s reputation as a credible, collaborative, and solutions-oriented organization.
Visit Redding & Tourism Leadership
- Provide executive leadership and oversight for Visit Redding and the Chamber’s tourism responsibilities.
- Work collaboratively with the City of Redding, tourism organizations, lodging partners, attractions, event organizers, sports tourism partners, and other stakeholders.
- Develop strategies that increase visitation, visitor spending, earned media, destination awareness, and Redding’s overall competitiveness as a destination.
- Ensure tourism investments are measurable, accountable, and aligned with contractual obligations and community priorities.
- Pursue opportunities to use tourism, events, sports, and destination marketing to strengthen Redding’s broader reputation and economic vitality.
- Maintain strong working relationships with regional and statewide tourism partners and ensure Visit Redding is well represented within the broader tourism industry.
Organizational Leadership
- Provide strategic leadership to Chamber staff and establish a culture of accountability, teamwork, innovation, professionalism, and service.
- Recruit, manage, develop, and evaluate employees while giving staff the authority and support necessary to succeed.
- Lead implementation of the Chamber’s strategic priorities in partnership with the Board of Directors.
- Maintain a strong organizational focus on membership value, community relevance, and measurable impact.
- Oversee Chamber programs, events, communications, membership initiatives, contracts, and day-to-day operations.
- Continuously evaluate programs and initiatives to ensure the Chamber’s resources are directed toward activities that create meaningful value.
Board & Governance
- Serve as the primary staff liaison to the Board of Directors.
- Provide the Board with timely, accurate information regarding organizational performance, finances, strategic priorities, community issues, and emerging opportunities.
- Work closely with the Board Chair, Executive Committee, Government Action Committee, and other committees as appropriate.
- Support board development and maintain clear distinctions between governance and day-to-day management.
- Carry out Board-approved policies, priorities, and strategic direction.
Financial & Contract Management
- Develop and manage the Chamber’s annual budget in partnership with staff, the Finance Committee, and Board of Directors.
- Maintain strong financial controls and regularly communicate the organization’s financial position to the Board.
- Develop and maintain diversified revenue streams, including membership, annual sponsorships, events, tourism contracts, grants, and strategic partnerships.
- Oversee significant contracts, vendor relationships, grants, and partnership agreements.
- Ensure appropriate stewardship of Chamber and tourism resources.
- Work collaboratively with accounting professionals, auditors, and other financial advisors.
- Maintain a focus on the long-term financial sustainability and strength of the organization.
Forward Redding Foundation
Serve as chief executive of the Forward Redding Foundation, the Chamber’s affiliated 501(c)(3) charitable organization, and identify opportunities to advance community, workforce, economic development, education, and other eligible initiatives through the Foundation.
ACCOUNTABILITY
The President & CEO is accountable to the Board of Directors for the overall performance, financial health, strategic direction, community relevance, and reputation of the Greater Redding Chamber of Commerce.
The position has direct responsibility for organizational performance, budget oversight, staff leadership, implementation of Board priorities, major contracts, advocacy efforts, tourism programs, and the development and stewardship of key community and financial relationships.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
The President & CEO has direct responsibility for Chamber personnel and organizational performance.
Responsibilities include recruiting and hiring employees, establishing expectations, assigning responsibilities, evaluating performance, developing employees, managing compensation within approved budgets, addressing personnel matters, and creating an organizational culture where talented employees can succeed.

- Financial & Organizational Management: Ability to responsibly oversee budgets, contracts, employees, programs, and organizational resources.
BUSINESS & COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS
The President & CEO is expected to develop and maintain strong relationships with Chamber members, major employers, small businesses, entrepreneurs, annual sponsors, elected officials, local government leadership, educational institutions, economic development organizations, tourism partners, media, nonprofit organizations, community leaders, and Chamber industry professionals at the local, regional, state, and national levels.
The ability to build, maintain, and appropriately use relational capital is essential to success in this position. The President & CEO should be someone who can bring people together, maintain trust across differing perspectives, and leverage strong relationships to advance the Chamber’s mission and the long-term interests of the Redding community.
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate should possess a combination of executive leadership ability, business understanding, community involvement, relationship-building skills, and experience relevant to the responsibilities of the position.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent combination of education and significant professional experience.
- Leadership experience within a chamber of commerce, economic development organization, tourism organization, business association, local government, private sector organization, nonprofit, or other community-focused organization.
- Demonstrated experience building relationships with business and government leaders.
- Experience with public policy, advocacy, government affairs, economic development, tourism, community development, fundraising, or related fields is strongly preferred.
- Experience managing employees, budgets, contracts, partnerships, and organizational operations.
- Demonstrated ability to develop sponsorships, partnerships, or other organizational revenue.
- Strong written, verbal, presentation, and public communication skills.
- Chamber industry credentials such as Institute for Organization Management (IOM), Accredited Chamber Executive (ACE), Western Association of Chamber Executives Academy, or similar professional development are preferred but not required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & EXPECTATIONS
This is a highly visible community leadership position and is primarily performed in person in Redding, California.
The President & CEO should expect regular participation in early morning, evening, and occasional weekend events, meetings, and community activities.
Some travel may be required for advocacy, professional development, tourism, economic development, legislative, or Chamber-related activities.
