Fellowship: Equal Justice Works Financial Empowerment Project

Position Description

Charleston Pro Bono Legal Services seeks diverse and dynamic applicants for a 24-month, full-time attorney position at Charleston Pro Bono Legal Services as an Equal Justice Works Fellow in the Financial Empowerment Project.

Equal Justice Works is the nation’s largest facilitator of opportunities in public interest law. The Equal Justice Works Financial Empowerment Project is a pilot initiative that embeds attorney Fellows with Financial Empowerment Centers to protect and transfer generational wealth through both financial and legal guidance. An Equal Justice Works Fellowship is an opportunity to transform your passion for equal justice into a career. As a Fellow, you will help close the wealth gap by providing free legal services that focus on estate planning, title clearing, and other asset preservation legal needs.

Charleston Pro Bono Legal Services Inc., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit located in Charleston, SC. Charleston Pro Bono is dedicated to providing civil legal aid to low-income clients.

Fellowship Responsibilities Include:

Providing direct legal services to Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) clients in the areas of estate planning and asset preservation, including but not limited to resolving fines and fees, title clearing, and addressing heirs’ property issues.
Developing and conducting training and outreach initiatives for Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) clients, including workshops and clinics developed in partnership with local FECs and community-based organizations.
Traveling to and providing services at in-county community partner locations.
Building key stakeholder relationships in furtherance of the Fellowship objectives by creating and fostering new relationships while furthering collaborative efforts with current partnerships.
Participating in collaborative learning and professional development through active engagement with the Equal Justice Works Financial Empowerment Project cohort. This includes contributing to resource exchanges, attending mandatory webinars and conference calls, and participating in training events such as the Equal Justice Works Leadership Development Training.
Contributing to required programmatic reporting and overall program evaluation.
Working collaboratively with support staff, volunteers, and students.

Qualifications

Eligible candidates should meet the following qualifications:

J.D. from an accredited law school;
Licensed attorney or pending bar admission;
Valid driver’s license;
Commitment to social justice;
Excellent writing, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills;
Diverse economic, social, and cultural experiences and a second language are preferred;
Knowledge of estate planning, probate, and/or property law;
Empathy and understanding of the unique legal challenges facing our clientele; and
Ability to work well under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.

Salary and Other Benefits: The Equal Justice Works Fellow will receive an annual salary with a range of $60,000 - $65,000 commensurate with experience, with additional employee benefits through Charleston Pro Bono Legal Services.
