Job Summary

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) plays a critical role in supporting the Claims Department by identifying, investigating, and helping prevent insurance fraud. The SIU is comprised of both Desk Investigators and Field Investigators who work collaboratively to investigate suspicious claims and protect the company from fraudulent activity.

The SIU Investigator is responsible for conducting comprehensive investigations across the states in which the company conducts business. This role involves analyzing suspicious claims, gathering and evaluating evidence, conducting interviews, reviewing documentation, and utilizing a variety of investigative methods and techniques to determine the legitimacy of claims. The investigator must exercise sound judgment, maintain detailed documentation, and possess a strong understanding of the insurance claims process and applicable regulations.

The Investigator handles low- to complex investigations involving suspected fraud related to insurance applications, automobile and property claims, and bodily injury claims. This position is responsible for planning, prioritizing, and executing investigative assignments, including background research, recorded statements and interviews, evidence collection and analysis, coordination of Examinations Under Oath (EUOs), and collaboration with claims personnel and external partners to resolve suspicious claim activity.

Job Responsibilities

· Supports the Claims Department by researching and investigating suspicious or potentially fraudulent property damage, bodily injury, and other insurance claims.

· Conducts thorough investigations using appropriate investigative methods, including interviews, recorded statements, document reviews, background research, and evidence analysis.

· Conducts recorded statements and coordinates or conducts Examinations Under Oath (EUOs) as required.

· Performs field investigations, including site inspections, interviews, and evidence collection, when necessary.

· Documents investigative activities, findings, and recommendations in claim files, ensuring accurate, timely, and comprehensive reporting.

· Communicates investigative findings effectively through clear written reports and verbal presentations to claims personnel and management.

· Provides training and guidance to Claims Department staff to improve the identification and referral of potentially suspicious or fraudulent claims.

· Refers suspected fraudulent claims to the appropriate state Department of Insurance or other regulatory agencies in accordance with applicable statutes and reporting requirements.

· Collaborates with claims adjusters, legal counsel, law enforcement, and other internal and external business partners throughout the investigative process.

· Ensures compliance with all company policies, SIU procedures, industry standards, and applicable federal and state laws and regulations.

· Maintains a current understanding of insurance fraud trends, investigative techniques, and changes in state and federal regulatory and statutory requirements.

Job Qualifications

Formal Education & Certification

Undergraduate College Degree or equivalent work experience will be considered.

Proven successful SIU or claims acumen.

Ability to make sound decision based upon contract or legal requirements

Knowledge & Experience

Casualty and/or PIP claims, as well as medical clinic investigations is preferred. Claims and Property Damage investigations experience will be required. Other investigative/law enforcement experience may be considered.

Skills & Competencies

Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, paperless/automated production environment.

Proven ability to identify potential fraud and conduct thorough investigations.

Excellent PC skills are required.

Excellent communication/interpersonal skills and ability to work with all levels within the organization and deal tactfully and diplomatically with public and outside authorities.

Must be able to work as a team player throughout the company.

Ensures that the highest degree of professionalism and integrity is maintained, and that decisions are made within the scope of what is fair, reasonable, and appropriate according to applicable law and industry standards.

Must have the ability to travel when necessary.
