JOB SUMMARY:
Birmingham Public Schools is seeking an innovative, collaborative, and visionary communications leader who
believes public education has the power to transform lives and strengthen communities. Reporting directly to the
Superintendent, the Director of Marketing, Communications & Community Engagement serves as the district's
chief communications strategist and storyteller, helping ensure every interaction with families, staff, students,
and the community reflects the excellence of Birmingham Public Schools.
This position provides strategic leadership for district marketing, communications, media relations, enrollment
strategy, family engagement, community partnerships, branding, and crisis communications. The Director
develops and implements a unified communications strategy that strengthens public trust, supports student
enrollment and retention, celebrates the accomplishments of students and staff, and communicates the district's
vision with clarity, transparency, and authenticity.
The Director works closely with district and school leaders to tell the story of Birmingham Public Schools, elevate
the district's reputation, and ensure families feel informed, welcomed, and connected from their first interaction
with the district through graduation. The successful candidate will be an exceptional communicator, relationship
builder, strategic thinker, and trusted advisor who is passionate about public education and committed to
creating meaningful connections between schools and the communities they serve.

QUALIFICATIONS: The selected candidate will demonstrate the following qualifications:
Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, Education, Organizational

Leadership, Public Administration, or a related field required.

Master's degree preferred.
Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible leadership experience in communications,

marketing, public relations, enrollment, or community engagement.

Experience supervising professional staff and leading cross-functional initiatives required.
Experience in public education or another mission-driven organization preferred.
Experience with strategic communications, branding, media relations, and crisis communications

preferred.

Knowledge & Skills

Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Demonstrated success developing strategic marketing and communications initiatives.
Knowledge of branding, digital marketing, social media, website governance, and public relations.
Ability to build trusted relationships with diverse stakeholders.
Strong leadership, organizational, and project management skills.
Experience using data and analytics to improve communication and enrollment outcomes.

High level of professionalism, integrity, and sound judgment.
Demonstrated passion for public education and a commitment to serving students, families, and the

community.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
District Leadership

Serve as a member of the Superintendent's leadership team and provide strategic communications

counsel to district leaders and staff.

Develop and implement a district-wide marketing, communications, and community engagement

strategy aligned with district priorities.

Advise district leaders on messaging, stakeholder engagement, and public relations.
Supervise assigned departments and staff while promoting collaboration, accountability, and

innovation.

Establish department goals, manage budgets, and evaluate program effectiveness.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.

Marketing, Communications & Brand Leadership

Lead the district's marketing, branding, and communications strategy to strengthen public awareness

and confidence in Birmingham Public Schools.

Ensure consistent messaging, visual identity, and brand standards across all schools and departments.
Showcase the achievements of students, staff, and programs through compelling storytelling and

strategic content.

Oversee district publications, websites, social media, photography, video, and other communication

platforms.

Develop marketing campaigns supporting district initiatives, strategic priorities, and community

engagement.

Evaluate communication effectiveness using data, analytics, and stakeholder feedback.

Enrollment Strategy & Family Experience

Provide strategic leadership for enrollment, marketing, and family engagement initiatives.
Develop strategies that attract prospective families, retain current students, and position Birmingham

Public Schools as a premier destination district.

Partner with the enrollment team to ensure families experience responsive, welcoming, and consistent

service.

Use enrollment trends, demographic data, and community feedback to guide planning and outreach.
Support the promotion of district programs and specialized offerings through targeted marketing and

communications.
Media Relations & Crisis Communications

Lead district media relations and public information efforts.
Develop proactive communications that strengthen public trust and district reputation.
Coordinate communications during emergencies and sensitive situations while ensuring timely, accurate,

and transparent messaging.

Support speeches, presentations, talking points, and executive communications for district leadership.
Maintain crisis communication plans and response protocols.

Community Engagement & Partnerships

Build strong relationships with families, community organizations, businesses, civic leaders, and higher

education partners.

Develop initiatives that strengthen community engagement and showcase the value of Birmingham

Public Schools.

Represent the district at community events and foster partnerships that support district priorities and

student success.

Systems, Innovation & Continuous Improvement

Promote innovative communication strategies and technologies that improve efficiency and audience

engagement.

Use data, analytics, enrollment trends, and stakeholder feedback to evaluate performance and guide

decision-making.

Continuously improve communication systems, workflows, and digital tools to better serve families, staff,

and the community.

Essential Functions:

Serve as an active district representative by attending meetings, school events, community forums, and

weekend or evening functions as required.

Maintain availability for extended hours, evenings, and weekends to manage crisis communications,

emergency announcements, and high-priority public relations matters.

Possess and maintain reliable transportation to ensure seamless travel between district facilities, off-site

school events, media briefings, and community partner locations.
