POSITION TITLE: MRF Maintenance Technician

DEPARTMENT: Material Recovery Facility (MRF)

REPORTS TO: MRF Manager

FLSA STATUS: 1.0 FTE, Union Position

SCHEDULE: Tuesday through Saturday – 9:30am to 6:00pm

COMPENSATION: $35.23 (70% of Top Mechanic Pay, per Teamster Local 70 CBA)

About TRI-CED Community Recycling

TRI-CED Community Recycling, founded in 1980, is a nonprofit corporation that reduces the waste stream, provides job opportunities for hard to hire youth and adults and shares residual profits with the community. TRI-CED provides curbside recycling and material processing services for the cities of Union City and Hayward and operates a certified California Redemption Center.

Position Description Summary:

Under the direction of MRF Manager, the MRF Maintenance Technician cleans, inspects, and lubricates recyclable sorting equipment and performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on recycling equipment, such as motors, star gears, belts, conveyors, screens, gear drives, and bearings. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

● Performs preventive maintenance tasks; inspections, services, adjustments and identifies and addresses manufacturer or industry standard maintenance functions and/or defects such as machine lubrication, filter replacement, wear part replacement and other related preventative maintenance functions

● Assists journey-level mechanics in the installation, maintenance, and repair of recycling mechanical equipment and systems, conveyors, screens, sorters, gear drives, and bearings.

● Continually monitors equipment and makes necessary adjustment(s) to ensure proper operation

● Assists journey-level mechanics to dismantle machines, equipment, or devices to access and remove defective parts, using hoists, lifts, hand tools, and any necessary power tools

● Ensures processing equipment is continuously compliant with manufacturer, industry and regulatory safely standards, policies, and are operating safely within facility standard operating procedures

● Maintains preventative maintenance schedules, logs, checklists and reports. Plans, schedules, conducts and documents daily, monthly and annual facility preventative maintenance activities using a mobile and PC based application

● Cleans and organizes workshop and storage areas

● Keep safety walkways clear of debris and equipment

● Coordinates repairs with manufacturer or contractors as requested/required

● Cleans accumulated contaminants from screening/sorting/baling machinery. Cleans processing equipment. Uses high velocity air, vacuum or cleaners/detergents to remove dust, grime or other contaminants from equipment and structures

● Pumps liquid from pits and removes accumulated debris

● Operate a variety of hand and power tools; wrenches, ratchets, hammers, chisels, pry-bars, grinders, saws, drills, air impact wrench etc.

● Operate vehicles and motorized equipment; forklift, aerial lift, industrial vacuum, wheel tractors, light trucks, heavy duty trucks.

● Removes collected piles of debris from the facility both manually and with equipment.

● Assist in the response to calls for emergency repairs and spill clean-ups.

● Performs routine maintenance and repair work.

● All other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

● High school diploma or equivalent.

● Must have the ability to comprehend and follow both verbal and written instructions.

● Two years of progressively responsible experience working as a mechanic's helper or comparable position is preferred.

● Previous knowledge and/or experience with confined space and Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) protocols.

● Required to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and weather events as scheduled or needed in accordance with departmental policies and collective bargaining agreement.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

● Possession of a valid driver license.

● Forklift certification

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

● While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Climbs stairs, on catwalks, and on equipment.

● Working conditions are typically loud in work area while operating equipment, or machinery following all prescribed safety rules and regulations.

● While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is frequently exposed to unpleasant and hazardous working conditions, such as moving mechanical parts, vibrations, high precarious places, noxious unpleasant fumes, and airborne particles.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

● Machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, safety and maintenance.

● Rotating equipment such as speed reducers; conveyors, pumps, gear boxes, right angle and in-line gear drives.

● Tools, methods, materials, and techniques of the specialty area. Operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.

● Occupational hazards and safety precautions.

Skills in:

● Active listening and giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate.

● Monitoring and assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.

● Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.

● Working with hand and power tools.

● Performing general maintenance, labor activities and repair tasks.

Ability to:

● Quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.

● Quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.

● Keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.

● Coordinate two or more limbs (for example, two arms, two legs, or one leg and one arm) while sitting, standing, or lying down. It does not involve performing the activities while the whole body is in motion.

● Make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.

● Read, write and comprehend and follow both verbal and written instructions.

● Perform routine and emergency repairs.

● Use of hand and power tools to perform maintenance activities.

● Perform basic maintenance on tools and equipment.

● Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

● Work as a member of a team, becoming increasingly knowledgeable and skillful in the field chosen.

● Perform basic mathematical calculations

● Operate a motor vehicle.

● Safely move products using specified equipment in a warehouse environment.
