About Us:
R & J Trucking is a family-owned and operated asset-based carrier, specializing in bulk commodity transportation. We use specialized equipment such as end-dump, pneumatic, walking floor, and roll-off trailers to serve our customers throughout the Eastern United States. Our customer base includes metal recycling, ferro-alloy, aluminum, waste, and plastic resin industries. We pride ourselves on outstanding CUSTOMER Service, delivered by dedicated and safe DRIVERS, operating well-maintained, state-of-the-art EQUIPMENT.

Job Description:
R & J Trucking is seeking an experienced Sales and Operations Manager with a strong background in specialized bulk transportation, particularly commodities hauled in end-dump equipment such as ferro alloys, scrap metal, aluminum, aggregates, waste, and related industrial materials. The ideal candidate will understand the operational demands of serving these markets and bring established relationships or meaningful connections within the industries that make up our customer base. This role requires someone who can identify new business opportunities, strengthen existing customer relationships, and work closely with operations to deliver reliable, efficient service in a niche transportation environment. The position also requires regular travel, with the expectation that approximately two weeks per month will be spent visiting customers, prospects, facilities, and industry events.

Key Responsibilities:

Develop and grow business opportunities within specialized bulk and end-dump transportation markets, including ferro alloys, scrap metal, aluminum, aggregates, waste, and related industrial commodities.
Maintain and strengthen relationships with existing customers while identifying new prospects within R & J Trucking’s core customer industries.
Use existing industry knowledge and relationships to open doors with mills, recyclers, processors, manufacturers, and other shippers that utilize end-dump and specialized bulk equipment.
Quote freight rates, evaluate lane opportunities, and work with leadership to ensure pricing reflects service requirements, equipment needs, market conditions, and profitability.
Manage customer accounts from opportunity development through ongoing service execution, ensuring expectations are clearly communicated and met.
Travel approximately two weeks per month to visit customers, prospects, facilities, job sites, and industry events.
Collaborate with dispatch, terminal managers, operations, billing, and leadership to ensure reliable service and efficient execution.
Identify and help resolve operational issues that impact customers, drivers, equipment utilization, billing, or service quality.
Monitor market activity, competitor behavior, customer demand, and industry trends to support sales strategy and growth.
Provide regular updates on sales activity, customer opportunities, market conditions, and operational challenges.

Qualifications:

Proven experience in transportation, logistics, or trucking sales, preferably involving specialized bulk, end-dump, scrap metal, ferro alloy, aluminum, aggregate, waste, or industrial commodity customers.
Existing relationships or strong familiarity with industries served by R & J Trucking, including metal recycling, ferro-alloy, aluminum, waste, aggregates, and related manufacturing or processing sectors.
Working knowledge of freight pricing, customer account management, lane development, equipment utilization, and transportation operations.
Ability to independently develop business opportunities and manage customer relationships without needing basic industry training.
Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with customers, drivers, dispatchers, terminal managers, billing, and company leadership.
Comfortable operating in a fast-paced transportation environment where priorities shift quickly and practical problem-solving is required.
Self-motivated, organized, and results-driven, with the ability to build and manage customer relationships over time.
Willing and able to travel approximately two weeks per month.
Proficient with Microsoft Office and comfortable using transportation management systems, customer portals, and related technology.
