About COA:

College of The Albemarle, located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, is the state's first community college, founded in 1961. We strive to transform lives by inspiring and empowering individuals and communities of our seven-county service area. Through our four locations, we provide quality college transfer and career and technical education to residents in northeast North Carolina.

Description

Position Summary

The Accessibility Coordinator promotes equitable access and student success by coordinating disability services, managing accommodations, and providing comprehensive case management for students with disabilities. This position ensures compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, FERPA, and applicable institutional policies while also supporting the Access to Achievement Program. The coordinator collaborates with students, faculty, staff, community partners, and employers to remove barriers to learning, foster inclusive educational environments, and promote student persistence, engagement, and employment outcomes.

This position receives general supervision from the Director of Student Services.

Examples of Duties

Accessibility Services and Compliance
- Coordinate and implement ADA and Section 504 accommodation processes for students with disabilities, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations.
- Conduct intake interviews and facilitate the interactive process to determine, implement, and monitor reasonable accommodations.
- Manage accommodation plans, including testing accommodations, and collaborate with faculty and testing centers to ensure equitable access.
- Maintain confidential student records and documentation in accordance with FERPA and institutional policies.
- Monitor the effectiveness of accommodations and make adjustments as appropriate through ongoing student case management.
- Assist in evaluating and recommending assistive technology and accessibility tools that support student success.
- Provide training to students, faculty, and staff on assistive technology, accessibility software, and inclusive instructional practices.
- Monitor the accessibility of campus facilities, programs, services, and digital content in collaboration with campus departments, identifying barriers and recommending improvements.
- Participate in compliance reporting, data collection, program assessment, and accessibility audits.
- Remain current on accessibility laws, regulations, and best practices through ongoing professional development.
Student Support and Case Management
- Maintain an assigned caseload of students and provide ongoing case management through regular meetings and progress monitoring.
- Assist with developing person-centered support plans that promote academic achievement, self-advocacy, independence, and career readiness.
- Connect students with appropriate campus and community resources to address academic, personal, and career-related needs.
- Encourage student engagement in inclusive campus activities, workshops, and leadership opportunities.
Program Coordination and Administration
- Support the daily operations of Accessibility Services to include the Access to Achievement Program.
- Maintain accurate, timely documentation of student interactions, accommodations, and program services.
- Assist with data management, program reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assist with implementation team meetings and with program planning, workshops, training, and special events.
- Collaborate with the Director of Student Services and other institutional stakeholders to advance accessibility initiatives and student success goals.
Outreach, Education, and Collaboration
- Provide outreach and educational programming to faculty, staff, students, and community partners regarding disability services, accessibility, accommodations, and inclusive practices.
- Assist with recruitment activities and provide information to prospective students and families about accessibility services to include the Access to Achievement Program.
- Foster collaborative relationships with faculty, campus departments, community organizations, and external agencies to promote student success.
- Serve as a resource to the campus community on disability awareness, accessibility, and inclusive learning environments.

Typical Qualifications

Required:

Bachelor's degree in Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, Disability Studies, or a related field.
Experience working with individuals with disabilities, student support services, case management, or accessibility services.
Experience interpreting and applying ADA and Section 504 requirements is preferred.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Preferred:

Master's degree in Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, Disability Studies, or a related field.
Experience working with ADA/Section 504 compliance in secondary and/or post-secondary education strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of:

Federal, state, and institutional accessibility regulations and best practices.
Knowledge of ADA, Section 504, FERPA, and disability services in higher education.
Knowledge of assistive technology, accessibility standards, and universal design principles.

Ability to:

Ability to manage confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders and community partners.
Proficiency with student information systems, database management, and Microsoft Office applications.
Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a student-centered approach.

Skills:

Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in a professional office environment with frequent interaction with students, faculty, staff, and the public. Requires prolonged computer use and occasional movement throughout campus to attend meetings and provide student support services. Occasional evening or weekend work and travel between College campuses may be required. Must be able to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
