Registered Nurse – Labor & Delivery | Travel Contract | Eureka, CA

Job Overview

Providence Saint Joseph Hospital in Eureka is seeking an experienced Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse for a 26-week night-shift travel assignment. The facility provides care for high-risk OB patients and a culturally diverse population. L&D RNs are also expected to circulate for Cesarean sections.

JOB DETAILS

Location: Eureka, CA 95501
Start Date: September 8, 2026
Contract Length: 26 weeks
Shift: Nights – 4x12 hours
Shift Timing: 6:00 PM – 6:30 AM
Hours: 48 hours/week
Specialty: Labor & Delivery RN

Postpartum experience is preferred.

Key Responsibilities

Provide comprehensive nursing care to laboring, antepartum, postpartum, and newborn patients.
Monitor maternal and fetal conditions throughout labor and delivery.
Perform and interpret fetal monitoring, including external and internal fetal monitoring.
Recognize and respond to abnormal fetal heart rate patterns.
Assist with vaginal and high-risk deliveries.
Circulate for Cesarean sections and recover C-section patients.
Manage postpartum patients, including fundus, lochia, perineal, and incision assessments.
Provide care for patients with postpartum hemorrhage, pregnancy-induced hypertension, and multiple births.
Administer and monitor medications including Pitocin, Magnesium Sulfate, antihypertensives, anticoagulants, insulin drips, and other OB medications.
Manage IV therapy, infusion pumps, and blood/blood products.
Perform sterile vaginal examinations and obstetrical triage.
Assist with procedures such as amniocentesis, cervical cerclage, D&C, and sterile speculum examinations.
Provide newborn assessments and delivery-room care.
Obtain APGAR scores and assist with newborn thermoregulation.
Support breastfeeding and provide parent education.
Perform newborn screening, cord care, infant identification, and discharge teaching.
Provide care for newborn hypoglycemia, phototherapy, and neonatal abstinence syndrome.
Support baby-friendly protocols and postpartum education.
Maintain accurate documentation in Epic.
Follow isolation precautions, PPE requirements, and facility safety protocols.
Collaborate with physicians, midwives, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, social services, and other interdisciplinary teams.
Float to sister facilities/units within scope when required by facility needs.

Required Qualifications

Active California RN license or valid compact license in hand at submission.
Minimum 1 year of Labor & Delivery RN experience.
L&D/postpartum/newborn care experience.
Epic charting experience.
Experience with fetal monitoring and obstetrical patients.
Ability to circulate for C-sections.
Ability to care for high-risk OB patients.
Strong assessment, clinical judgment, communication, and critical-thinking skills.
Ability to work night shifts, weekends, and holidays according to facility staffing needs.
