Full Job Description

About the Opportunity

A privately held commercial real estate and operator is conducting a confidential search for a Controller. The company owns and operates more than 3 million square feet of commercial properties (a mix of office, industrial, multifamily and retail) across multiple U.S. markets and employs more than 100 people.

This position reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer and leads the accounting organization, including an existing overseas team. Beyond running day-to-day property and corporate accounting, the person in this role will be the architect and leader of a significantly expanded offshore property accounting team based in India and will hire and train the staff, structure the work, and build the controls and documentation for the organization.

Who Succeeds Here

This role suits someone who is equally comfortable in the detail and the design. The company is not looking for a caretaker of an existing process but rather someone to build the process for the next several years of growth.

What You Will OwnAccounting operations

Oversee the monthly close process (15 days), along with the quarterly and annual close cycles across the property portfolio and management company entities.

Own property-level and corporate reporting: operating statements, balance sheets, budget-to-actual variance analysis, and cash flow

Own the chart of accounts and accounting policy across all entities

Own straight-line rent, percentage rent, fixed-asset entries, and other GAAP-related accounting requirements.

Own investor reporting, including waterfall and distribution support and JV partner reporting

Support the annual tax cycle, working alongside in-house tax expertise and outside preparers

Build upon the firm’s existing AI review agent to speed up the close process and enhance productivity

Building the offshore team

Design the team and process: what work sits in India, what stays in the U.S., and how handoffs and quality assurance reviews are handled

Recruit, onboard, and develop the offshore property accounting staff, scaling from the existing overseas team in partnership with offshore leadership

Write the playbook—procedures, close calendars, review checklists, and escalation paths—so the process is repeatable

Establish quality metrics and a review cadence that catches issues before they reach the U.S. team

Systems and process

Serve as the accounting owner of Yardi Voyager

Drive automation and elimination of manual workarounds; reduce close cycle time without giving up accuracy

Design and maintain the internal control environment as the portfolio and team scale

Required Qualifications

7+ years of accounting experience, with management responsibilities

Demonstrated ownership of a full close cycle

Chicago-based; this is a role with regular time in the corporate office, but that also offers flexibility to work from home as needed

Desire to operate in an entrepreneurial, growth environment

Preferred Qualifications

Commercial real estate accounting experience is strongly preferred. Candidates without a real estate background will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Previous or current CPA certification, or equivalent training

Public accounting foundation at a national or Big 4 firm, with a real estate client base

Experience with office or multi-tenant property types

Prior experience working with and/or setting up overseas accounting

Hands-on Yardi experience
