About North Side Community School

Founded in 2009, North Side Community School is a tuition-free PreK–8th grade public charter school serving approximately 500 students across three campuses in St. Louis. Position Summary

The Elementary Instructional Aide plays a critical role in supporting classroom learning and targeted academic interventions in reading and mathematics. Working closely under the guidance of classroom teachers and the Lead Interventionist, this role provides direct, small-group, and one-on-one instructional support to help elementary students build foundational skills. The Instructional Aide assists with daily learning activities, progress tracking, and maintaining a positive, structured learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

1. Direct Instructional Support

Small Group Support: Facilitate teacher-designed small-group and one-on-one intervention sessions in reading and math.
Literacy & Math Reinforcement: Guide students through practice tools (such as IXL), facilitate Read Alouds, support daily reading activities (DEAR time), and assist with foundational writing exercises.
Differentiated Practice: Assist in implementing personalized Reading Success Plans and intervention activities tailored to individual student needs.

2. Classroom & Student Assistance

Active Engagement: Keep students focused, encouraged, and actively participating during whole-group and independent work.
Tiered Support: Assist in delivering Tier I classroom support and Tier II/III intervention strategies as directed by the instructional team.
Behavior & Routine Management: Help maintain a warm, structured, and predictable classroom environment that fosters academic growth and positive behavior.

3. Collaboration & Progress Tracking

Data & Observation Notes: Assist teachers and interventionists by recording student progress, attendance, and observations during intervention sessions.
Teacher Collaboration: Meet regularly with classroom teachers and the Lead Interventionist to review student needs, receive instructional materials, and discuss progress.
Assessment Logistics: Assist with the setup and administration of reading readiness and diagnostic assessments at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year.
Substitute Teaching: Serve as a substitute teacher on an as needed basis.

Qualifications & Skills

Education: Associate’s degree, 60+ college credit hours, or a Bachelor’s degree in Education/related field strongly preferred.
Certification: Paraprofessional certification (or willingness to obtain) preferred. Substitute teacher certification required.
Experience: Experience working with elementary-aged children in an educational, tutoring, or childcare setting.
Core Competencies:
Patience, empathy, and a strong commitment to supporting elementary students.
Familiarity with basic elementary reading and math concepts.
Strong communication and team-collaboration skills.
Ability to adapt quickly to student needs and teacher directives.
