Full Job Description

Comptroller

Location: 127 South Front Street, Fremont, OH 43420

Schedule: Monday - Thursday, 34 hours per week

Employment Type: Full-Time Exempt

The Comptroller is a senior financial leader responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and continuous improvement of the organization’s accounting and financial reporting functions. This role oversees daily accounting operations, leads timely month-end and year-end close processes, ensures compliance with GAAP, Uniform Guidance, grant requirements, and provides clear, reliable financial information to support leadership and Board decision making.
The Comptroller builds and leads a high-performing accounting team, strengthens internal controls, and actively develops and improves the organization’s use of accounting systems and tools to maximize functionality, efficiency, transparency, and accountability. This position exercises sound judgment, takes ownership for outcomes, and helps guide the organization and staff through operational and systems-related change while maintaining high standards of accuracy and service.

Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, competencies and/or ability required.

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field; master’s degree or CPA/CMA a plus.

Experience:
Five years of progressive accounting experience, including responsibility for maintaining and overseeing enterprise accounting and financial reporting systems and producing accurate, timely financial statements. Five years of supervisory or lead experience, including overseeing accounting staff, assigning and reviewing work, and supporting staff development and accountability. Experience with fund accounting, grant-funded organizations, and compliance with GAAP and Uniform Guidance is preferred. Proficiency with modern accounting systems and financial reporting tools is required; experience with Sage Intacct is preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Direct daily accounting operations to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant financial records in accordance with GAAP, Uniform Guidance, and applicable grant requirements.
Lead and develop the accounting team by establishing expectations, clarifying roles, and providing regular feedback to foster accountability and professional growth.
Lead the month end and year end close processes, ensuring deadlines are met and results are accurate and clearly communicated.
Maintain the general ledger, dimensions, and program coding structures to support organizational, grant, and reporting needs.
Oversee reconciliation of balance sheet and cash accounts and ensure issues are resolved timely.
Prepare monthly agency wide and program level financial reports to support informed decision making.
Serve as the primary accounting liaison for single audits and program monitoring reviews.
Collaborate with the CFO to design, implement, and monitor internal controls over financial reporting, compliance, and risk.
Ensure agency fiscal policies and procedures are applied consistently through oversight and staff guidance.
Ensure effective and consistent use of financial systems, including Sage Intacct, to support accuracy, compliance, and efficiency.
Coordinate system updates, enhancements, testing, training, and documentation to ensure smooth adoption and data integrity.
Identify and implement improvements to workflows, reporting, and controls through automation and standardization.
Serve as backup to the CFO to ensure continuity of financial leadership.
Perform related duties consistent with agency policies, procedures, and grant requirements, as assigned.

Must submit to initial and/or periodic state and/or federal criminal checks.
Must submit to initial and periodic drug and alcohol testing.
Ability to be reached by cellular phone during business hours and after hours.
